California Governor Gavin Newsom faces backlash after illegal immigrant in Florida Turnpike crash found to have state-issued CDL
Three killed in Florida crash caused by an illegal U-turn by a semi-truck driver
According to an official Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) press release dated August 16, 2025, the fatal crash occurred on August 12, 2025, on Florida's Turnpike in St. Lucie County. Singh, driving a commercial semi-truck and trailer, attempted an illegal U-turn using an unauthorised median crossover. The manoeuvre resulted in a violent collision with a minivan, killing all three of its occupants. Singh has since been arrested and charged with three counts of vehicular homicide by Florida State Troopers.

Driver was an undocumented Indian immigrant with a CDL issued by California
The FLHSMV report also confirms that Harjinder Singh entered the U.S. illegally via the Mexico border in 2018 and later obtained a California-issued CDL. Despite his undocumented status, Singh managed to obtain a commercial driver's license in California—raising urgent questions about how state-level DMV policies allow individuals without legal status to qualify for such certifications. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has since issued a detainer for Singh through the 287(g) programme.
Public outrage mounts against Governor Gavin Newsom
The news has sparked furious responses online, with many calling out California's DMV and Governor Newsom for enabling undocumented individuals to obtain CDLs. One user posted, 'OMFG the dude who caused this horrific wreck illegally crossed the Mexican border, and California gave them a CDL!!!! WTAF!!! Gavin Newsom has a lot to answer for here. Florida Army may have to invade California over this.' One shared, "So Gavin Newsom's California issues a CDL to an illegal Indian immigrant who then makes an illegal semi-truck u-turn in Florida, killing a family of three.Democrat-run states are complete liabilities, and the Trump administration needs to crack down on them in any way possible."

Another added, 'Democrat-run states are complete liabilities, and the Trump administration needs to crack down on them in any way possible.' A third user expressed disbelief, writing, 'How does an ILLEGAL get a commercial driver's license in Gavin Newsom's state? 👀 Guaranteed he's not the only one, and very likely this is happening in Canada.'

"Yet another tragedy at the hands of an illegal immigrant. 3 innocent Americans are dead in Florida because Gavin Newsom's California handed out a CDL to someone who illegally crossed our border. Blood is on the hands of Gavin," mentioned one enraged user.

BJYM state secy held after man shoots self over monetary dispute
Dehradun: The state secretary of BJP's youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), was arrested in Pauri Garhwal district after a 35-year-old man allegedly ended his life by shooting himself inside his car early on Thursday morning. The deceased, Jitendra Negi, a resident of Thalsari village, before taking the extreme step, purportedly uploaded a video on social media in which he alleged that he was ending his life due to pressure from the accused, Himanshu Chamoli, in a property-related monetary dispute of Rs 35 lakh. SSP Lokeshwar Singh said that the incident happened at around 6 am after Jitendra uploaded the video at 4 am. "Preliminary investigation suggests that he was inside his car at a secluded place and shot himself with a 12-bore weapon. He fired a single shot, which pierced his neck and struck the car's roof. Soon after receiving the information, police rushed to the spot with a forensic team to initiate a probe," said Singh. SSP Singh said that the police took cognisance of the widely circulated video in which Negi accused Chamoli of being the reason behind his drastic step, citing a monetary dispute. "Based on that, we tracked down Chamoli and arrested him before registering a case on the charges of abetment to suicide under BNS section 108. A probe is underway over the complaint lodged by Negi's family. It was also found that Negi was with his two friends inside the car during the whole night. However, in the early hours, when he ended his life, they were not present there. They too are being questioned," said Singh. Meanwhile, BJYM removed Chamoli from the post of state secretary. A letter issued by Shashank Rawat, state president of the organisation, stated, "Taking cognisance of the media reports related to Himanshu Chamoli, the organisation has removed him from the post of state secretary with immediate effect." Night curfew imposed along Bangla border: East Khasi Hills DM
Shillong: The East Khasi Hills district magistrate has, under Section 163 BNSS, imposed a night curfew from 8pm to 6am within a radius of 1km from the Zero Line (international border). The curfew prohibits movement of people along the international border with the intention of crossing into Bangladesh or sneaking into the Indian territory. Unauthorised procession or unlawful assembly of five or more persons and carrying of arms or other instruments which can be used as weapons, including sticks or rods and stones, in and around the India-Bangladesh border along with illegal, undesirable activities, including smuggling of cattle, contraband goods, betel-nuts, betel leaves, dry fish, bidis, cigarettes, chai patti, etc have also been prohibited, according to the official order issued on Thursday. The order was necessitated in view of the current situation in Bangladesh due to which there is every likelihood of the cross-border movement of unwanted elements, members of proscribed militant groups, smugglers and any other illegal activities on India-Bangladesh border, the notification said. The official order pointed out that certain stretches of the India-Bangladesh border areas in East Khasi Hills district are still porous and prone to infiltration by illegal migrants and members of organised crime. These groups may gather in large numbers near the border during night hours to continue with their 'nefarious activities', and 'whereas, such illegal/undesirable activities, if not prevented, may lead to uncontrollable cross border infiltration resulting in breach of peace and tranquillity' in the district, the night curfew was necessitated. "This order comes into force with immediate effect and will remain in force for a period of two months from the date of issue," the statement said. Bank clerk goes missing after ‘harassment' by senior officer
Agra: A senior clerk of a reputed bank, posted at Agra's RACPC Chippitola branch, went "missing" on Monday evening after accusing an AGM-rank officer of "harassment". Before his disappearance, Surendra Pal Singh left behind a letter addressed to his wife and children. In it, the 40-year-old wrote: "I'm writing this letter with a heavy heart and after much thought. I can no longer tolerate abuse and insults. I'm extremely distressed by the daily humiliation… AGM RACPC Chippitola humiliates me in front of bank customers and other staff members. I do not know what I will do, but if anything happens to me, AGM RACPC would be responsible for it." On Tuesday, Singh's family approached the bank's deputy general manager (DGM) and other senior officials in the Agra Circle, seeking action against the AGM. When no action was taken, they went to police on Wednesday, where an FIR was registered at Rakabganj police station under BNS section 351(1) (criminal intimidation). DCP city Sonam Kumar said, "Action will be taken based on the family's complaint. Evidence will be collected regarding the allegations, and a team has been deployed to search for the missing employee." Singh's wife, Nitya Singh, claimed her husband was transferred to the branch three months ago and had been "mentally harassed by the AGM since then". "He has worked for nearly 17 years and was a sincere employee. He is the sole breadwinner of our family, supporting me, our two children and his elderly mother...," she said. DGM was unavailable for comment. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
