AAP leader Somnath Bharti can't represent wife in defamation case: Nirmala Sitharaman to court

Indian Express4 hours ago

Citing 'conflict of interest', a lawyer representing Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, on Thursday, told a Delhi court that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Somnath Bharti cannot legally represent his wife in a defamation case lodged against the FM.
Bharti's wife, Lipika Mitra, had filed a criminal defamation case against the BJP minister, accusing her of making 'defamatory, false, and malicious' statements about her husband. The complaint claimed the statements were aired widely on news platforms, both on TV and YouTube, with the alleged objective of 'tarnishing his reputation and damaging his electoral prospects' during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Appearing before the Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Paras Dalal, Sitharaman counsel argued that Bharti – an advocate – representing his wife in the case would amount to a 'conflict of interest'.
The counsel also sought the withdrawal of Bharti's vakalatnama (a document authorising a lawyer to represent a client). Failure to comply, the counsel stated, would lead to disciplinary proceedings being initiated against him.
The case pertains to a press conference addressed by Sitharaman on May 17, 2024. 'The accused made these utterances with the sole intention to weaken his chances of winning and cause immense mental anguish to him,' Mitra alleged in her complaint. She also argued that the alleged statements made by Sitharaman had caused 'irreparable mental agony' to the couple's two children.
Bharti had sought time to respond to the allegations levelled by Sitharaman counsel. Following this, the matter was adjourned and listed after summer vacations. ACJM Dalal will now hear the matter on July 16.

"We still face hunger, poverty, helplessness": Prashant Kishor criticises Centre for failing to deliver on key issues in Bihar

Patna (Bihar) [India], June 26 (ANI): Ahead of the upcoming Bihar elections, Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) founder Prashant Kishor has criticised the Centre for failing to deliver on issues such as employment, poverty alleviation, and development in the state. He alleged that the government's focus has been more on image-building than real impact. In an interview with ANI, Kishor said, 'They claim toilets have been built everywhere. These are just lies. No one in this country has matched Modi ji when it comes to theatrics and lying. He promised to bring back black money and deposit Rs 15 lakh in everyone's account. He promised two crore jobs every year. Where are they?' He said that despite PM Modi being in power at the Centre for 11 years, Bihar continues to suffer from poverty, hunger, and helplessness. He pointed out that no major industries have been established in the state, forcing young people to migrate in search of work. 'We still face hunger, poverty, and helplessness. We ask this government--after being in power for twenty years in the state and eleven years at the Centre--can you name even one domain where Bihar ranks number one nationally?' he questioned. He also alleged that the government's claims are based on manipulated data, particularly in areas such as toilet construction and educational reforms. 'All they do is list claims based on manipulated data. They say the condition has improved--more schools, more teachers. But the real question is: where are the teachers?' he said. Kishor further criticised PM Modi for failing to reopen sugar mills in Bihar or fulfil his promise of granting the state special status and a special package. 'He comes and talks about drinking tea made from sugar produced in mills he claimed he would restart. It's been eleven years--when will those sugar mills reopen? When will we get that sugar to make tea? He promised a special package and special status for Bihar. Where are they?' Kishor questioned. He also slammed Union Ministers from Bihar, accusing them of failing to bring any meaningful projects to the state. 'All it did was repackage ongoing projects without any special additions. Even the Textile Minister, Piyush Goyal, didn't allocate a mega textile park to Bihar. Bihar has several Union Ministers. What have they brought from the Centre to Bihar? In fact, an agro-research centre originally in Bihar was being shifted to Karnataka under Shivraj Singh Chauhan when he was the Agriculture Minister. It was only halted after public uproar,' Kishor said. He alleged that democratic institutions and the media have been 'hijacked' under the Modi government. 'Modi ji wins elections in the country because of propaganda. All democratic institutions in the country have been hijacked over the last eleven years. The media have been hijacked. We must say this openly... TV is flooded with Modi's coverage every day, but the media only questions the Opposition...' he said. 'Why has he stopped holding press conferences? Why is there no accountability? Earlier, the media used to question the ruling party. Now, they only push their propaganda and put the Opposition in the dock,' he added. In the current 243-member Bihar Assembly, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) holds 131 seats -- BJP (80), JD(U) (45), HAM(S) (4), and support from 2 independents. The Opposition INDIA Bloc holds 111 seats -- RJD (77), Congress (19), CPI(ML) (11), CPI(M) (2) and CPI (2). (ANI)

Union MoS Khadse underlines youth, sports as key drivers of social upliftment during 'Poorvottar Sampark Setu' initiative in Sribhumi

Sribhumi (Assam) [India], June 26 (ANI): Continuing her whirlwind tour of the Northeast, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse arrived in Sribhumi on Thursday under the Centre's Poorvottar Sampark Setu outreach initiative--an ambitious programme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deepen administrative ties and accelerate development across the region. During a robust one-day engagement in Sribhumi, Khadse chaired a review meeting with officials from 26 departments. She underlined youth and sports as key drivers of social upliftment and assured enhanced support for sports infrastructure and youth-centric initiatives. Fresh from inspections in Unakoti and a surprise visit to Agartala's Sports Authority of India (SAI) Sports Training Centre earlier this week, Khadse's Sribhumi visit brought into sharp focus the district's recent strides, as per a ministry press release. Meanwhile, the Khel Maharan 2.0 programme has galvanised 246,500 youth registrations across eight disciplines, from kabaddi to road cycling, highlighting sports' rising allure in rural Assam. During a robust one-day engagement in Sribhumi, Khadse chaired a review meeting with officials from 26 departments. The meeting brought into sharp focus the district's recent strides in agriculture, health, education, fisheries, and welfare schemes. On agriculture, Sribhumi has notched a 103 per cent saturation under PM-KISAN and surpassed the 126 per cent target for Sali paddy insurance enrolment through PMFBY. Food security is equally robust: nearly 97.9 per cent of allotted NFSA rice has reached more than one million beneficiaries. In health, 33,662 expectant mothers registered for antenatal care in 2024-25, with over 94 percent enrolling in their first trimester; departments are now tackling rising hypertension and anemia cases. Education officials reported 223,034 students enrolled across primary to higher secondary schools, with attendance holding steady at 72 per cent. Teacher presence remains high at 88 percent an encouraging sign as authorities push to close learning gaps. Fisheries underpin local livelihoods: last year's production of 19,430 MT, dominated by pond and tank yields, sustains nearly the entire population's dietary needs. 'Sribhumi exemplifies how committed governance and community energy can rewrite development narratives,' Khadse told reporters. 'From Unakoti's model schools to Agartala's athlete training and now Sribhumi's agricultural and health successes, we are one step closer to realising Modi ji's vision of a truly Viksit Bharat in the Northeast.' Looking ahead, the Minister urged district officials to fast-track pending household tap connections under Jal Jeevan Mission, shore up maternal-health infrastructure, and harness digital platforms for seamless Aadhaar-based payments which already stand at 96 percent coverage in rural livelihoods schemes. Her day in Sribhumi concluded with grassroots interactions--meeting members of civil society organisations to gather firsthand feedback on service delivery. As the Poorvottar Sampark Setu caravan moves on, Assam's northeastern hamlets remain firmly in the national spotlight. (ANI)

HC seeks govt's reply on Pesa Act

Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court on Thursday asked the state govt to inform the reasons behind the non-implementation of the Panchayat Extension of Schedules Area (Pesa) Act in Jharkhand. A division bench of Chief Justice M S Ramachandra Rao and Justice Rajesh Shankar issued the order while hearing a contempt petition, filed for the implementation of the Pesa Act rules, which were drafted earlier, and the extension of scheduled areas at the panchayat level. While hearing the petition in July last year, the high court granted two months' time to the govt for implementation of the rules. Despite the time granted, no action has been taken by the department concerned, pursuant to which the contempt petition was filed. The bench issued notice to the panchayati raj department secretary and sought an explanation for non-compliance with the court's order, which amounts to a contempt proceeding. The case will again be heard on August 5. The Union govt had in 1996 rolled out the Pesa Act by which the tribal population will be given social security. The state govt, despite the commencement of the act in 1996 has still not been able to draft and formulate specific rules.
