NIT-R bags patent for bacterial biofilm tech to treat toxic industrial wastewater

ROURKELA: A research team of the National Institute of Technology-Rourkela (NIT-R) has secured patent for its novel bacterial biofilm technology that degrades phenanthrene, a toxic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) found in industrial chemical waste.
Contrary to the conventional methods for wastewater treatment, this technology offers environment friendly, effective and cost-efficient solution.
Informing about the grant of patent on Thursday, the NIT-R said PAHs are hazardous organic compounds capable of contaminating soil and water through fossil fuel combustion, industrial discharge and oil spills. The traditional methods used to address this challenge with chemical oxidation or soil excavation are expensive and often generate secondary pollution. But the new technology provides a cheaper alternate to the global challenge of wastewater treatment.
The developed biofilm comprises cells attached to the substratum within an extracellular polymeric matrix. The research team grew the biofilm using Luria Bertani broth, a nutrient-rich medium.
Lead researcher Prof Surajit Das of the department of Life Science said, 'The biofilm is well-compatible for integration in existing reactors used at municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities, especially those dealing with hydrocarbon-based pollutants. Our patented technology also opens opportunities for potential collaboration with the petrochemical industry to promote more sustainable pollution control practices.'

A revolutionary technology developed by the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) can transform the way teak plantations are protected from their most notorious pest – the teak defoliator moth (Hyblaea puera). The institute has successfully identified, mass-produced and patented a naturally occurring virus, Hyblaea puera Nucleopolyhedrosis Virus (HpNPV), which causes lethal infection in the pest larvae and prevents widespread defoliation of teak trees. For decades, the teak defoliator has wreaked havoc in plantations, stripping entire forests of their foliage up to six times a year, weakening trees and causing significant loss in timber yield. 'When the larvae attack, the tree spends its energy regenerating leaves instead of growing. It's a huge invisible loss,' explains T.V. Sajeev, Principal Scientist at KFRI. Conventional control methods such as aerial spraying of chemical pesticides were tried — at Konni in Kerala and Barnavappara in Madhya Pradesh — inviting protests due to environmental concerns. The KFRI even presented a paper at the 1980 Forestry Conference at Dehradun titled 'The problem of teak defoliator: to spray or not to spray?' Economic loss KFRI's sustained research showed that the economic loss due to teak defoliators is staggering: an estimated 3 cubic metres of wood per hectare annually, translating to ₹562.5 crore loss in Kerala and ₹12,525 crore in India. The institute screened the pest's natural enemies and zeroed in on HpNPV, a virus that is entirely host-specific, targeting only the teak defoliator larvae, and thus completely safe for the forest ecosystem. 'The beauty of the virus is in how it works,' said Mr. Sajeev. 'It multiplies at least a trillion times inside a single larva. When the body breaks open, it releases huge quantities of inoculum. Even if the infection is sub-lethal, the virus stays in the insect, gets passed on to the next generation, and proves lethal then.' With a clear understanding of the pest's life cycle, HpNPV can be applied during early-stage outbreaks to prevent larger infestations. Field trials at Nilambur in Malappuram, seen as India's cradle of teak, were a success. KFRI has already transferred the know-how for outbreak monitoring and virus application to the Forest department. 'Now it's up to the department to formally adopt the technology,' said Mr. Sajeev. Export potential What makes this innovation more significant is that many of the 64 countries now cultivating teak — from its native range of just four (India, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand) — have banned chemical pesticide use. This opens up a massive export potential for the eco-friendly HpNPV technology. KFRI will showcase the HpNPV solution at the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) R&D Summit 2025, to be held on August 7 in Thiruvananthapuram, positioning it as a scalable, sustainable model for forestry management across the globe.

An announcement in this regard was made during I-STEM SAMAVESHA–11 held on the campus on Tuesday (August 5). A release said that I-STEM is India's national platform committed to democratising access to advanced scientific infrastructure and fostering collaborative innovation across sectors. The centre is envisioned as a strategic hub that connects academic institutions, research labs, startups, and industries within a region to amplify resource sharing, foster inter-institutional collaboration, and accelerate research and innovation. SAMAVESHA is the flagship outreach initiative of the Indian Science, Technology, and Engineering Facilities Map (I-STEM), operating under the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (OPSA), Government of India. The programme is aimed at promoting equitable access to advanced scientific infrastructure, enabling researchers, startups, industries, and academic professionals, especially from tier-3 and tier-4 regions, to benefit from facilities and expertise typically concentrated in tier-1 and tier-2 cities. Prasad Krishna, Director, NIT-C, and Harilal Bhaskar, COO/National Coordinator, I-STEM, OPSA, Government of India, opened the event. N. Kerala to showcase R&D strength with science-industry summit

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 30 (PTI) The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) will host the first R&D Summit here on August 7, bringing together the state's top research minds, industries, and policy-makers on a single platform. The summit aims to connect groundbreaking research outputs from the R&D institutions under the Science and Technology Department with real-world market needs. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the event, which features presentations, one-on-one B2B sessions, storytelling case studies, and the formal signing of Expressions of Interest (EOIs) to foster collaborations beyond the summit. From technologies and prototypes to policy tools and services, the event will focus on identifying innovations that can be commercialised, scaled, or applied to solve pressing societal challenges, an official statement said here on Wednesday. K P Sudheer, Executive Vice President of KSCSTE, said the summit serves as a strategic platform to bring together and connect key stakeholders, including enablers, investors, institutions, and industries. The objective is to engage with the research and development outputs of Kerala's R&D institutions, translating innovations into solutions that benefit the wider public, he said. 'Our focus is on making research visible, actionable, and impactful. The summit is a platform for ideas to travel from lab to land, and from researchers to real users," Dr A Sabu, Member Secretary of KSCSTE, said. The R&D Summit 2025 will showcase technologies, products, services, and policy frameworks under three thematic categories — Technologies/Products, Service Portfolios, and Policy Innovations, the release said. Each institution will pitch its most promising innovations, followed by reverse pitching from industry stakeholders to express their operational needs. Stakeholders from across sectors, including Kerala Startup Mission, KSIDC, Directorate of Industries, public universities, business incubators, MSMEs, and venture capital firms are expected to participate, it said. The summit will also serve as a policy dialogue platform to enhance Kerala's ecosystem for research commercialisation and public-oriented science, the statement added.
