Mithi River desilting: Dino Morea arrives at ED office in Mumbai for probe

Time of Indiaa day ago

Bollywood actor
Dino Morea
appeared before the
Enforcement Directorate
(ED) on Thursday in Mumbai. He was called in connection with a money laundering case linked to a Rs 65 crore scam involving the desilting of the Mithi river.
What happened?
According to a PTI report, Morea reached the ED office in Ballard Estate, South Mumbai, around 10:30 am for questioning. The ED had earlier conducted searches at over 15 places in Mumbai and Kochi, including Morea's home in Bandra (West) and locations linked to his brother Santino Morea. Officials from the
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation
(BMC), contractors, and others were also targeted.
The case involves alleged cheating worth Rs 65.54 crore in tenders given between 2017 and 2023 for cleaning the Mithi river.
This river is important as it helps drain stormwater in Mumbai. The police said BMC officials fixed the tender to favour a particular supplier of machinery. Contractors then made fake bills for moving sludge out of the city, causing a big loss to public funds.
Morea brothers' role
The report also revealed, Dino Morea and his brother Santino were questioned before by the
Mumbai Police
Economic Offences Wing. They are suspected of having links with middleman Ketan Kadam, who was arrested in the case, along with another accused, Jai Joshi.

Kadam and Joshi rented out machines used for desilting to contractors. The Morea brothers' financial dealings with companies tied to Santino are also being looked into.
The Mithi river desilting project was started after the heavy floods in 2005 that badly affected Mumbai. Keeping the river clear is vital to stop floods during
monsoon
rains. The ED is continuing its probe under the Prevention of
Money Laundering Act
. More questioning and investigations are expected as the case unfolds.

Nationwide protests against immigration raids escalate, leading to arrests, curfews

AP image Protests over federal immigration enforcement raids are flaring up around the country as officials in cities from coast to coast get ready for major demonstrations against President Donald Trump over the weekend. While many demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been peaceful, others led to clashes with police who sometimes used chemical irritants to disperse crowds. Hundreds have been arrested. Trump has ordered the deployment of roughly 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles following protests over his stepped-up enforcement of immigration laws. The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocked a federal judge's order that had directed Trump to return control of National Guard troops to California, shortly after the judge had ruled the Guard deployment was illegal and both violated the Tenth Amendment and exceeded Trump's statutory authority. The White House called the order "unprecedented" and said it "puts our brave federal officials in danger." The federal government immediately filed an appeal with the Ninth Circuit court. The court said it would hold a hearing on the matter June 17. Volatile protests prompted officials to enforce curfews in Los Angeles and Spokane. Republican governors in Texas and Missouri mobilised National Guard troops to be ready to help law enforcement manage demonstrations in those states. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo Activists are planning "No Kings" events across the country on Saturday to coincide with Trump's planned military parade in Washington, DC Those were already scheduled but will happen amid the week's rising tensions. The Trump administration said immigration raids and deportations will continue. A look at some recent protests and reactions across the country: Las Vegas Police said 94 people were arrested on "various criminal and traffic" charges, and four officers were injured in a Wednesday night protest. Some in the estimated crowd of about 800 threw bottles and rocks at officers, police said. A crowd gathered near the city's federal courthouse and blocked several streets before police declared an unlawful assembly. Local media reported that tear gas, flash-bang grenades and rubber bullets were used to disperse the protesters. Chicago Hundreds of demonstrators packed a park plaza near Lake Michigan on Thursday. Veronica Castro, an organiser with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, urged people to learn how to protect themselves and elected officials to speak out. The group later marched along the city's iconic Michigan Avenue. They were flanked by their own security marshals and Chicago police officers on bicycles and in slow-moving patrol cars. Seattle Hundreds of protesters marched through downtown Seattle Wednesday evening to a federal building where immigration cases are heard. Some of them set a dumpster on fire. The building was covered in graffiti, with "Abolish ICE Now" written in large letters across its front window. Dozens of officers squared off with protesters near the building, some shooting pepper spray. Some protesters threw fireworks and rocks at officers, police said. Spokane, Washington Mayor Lisa Brown imposed an overnight curfew in downtown Spokane after a protest Wednesday outside an ICE office that ended with more than 30 arrests and police firing pepper balls at the crowd. Brown said the majority of protesters were peaceful. "We respect their right to peacefully protest and to be upset about federal policies," she said. "I have been that person who has protested federal policies and that is a right we have." San Antonio Several hundred protesters marched through downtown San Antonio and near the historic Alamo mission. Although Texas National Guard troops were seen in the area, the demonstration was mostly peaceful. The Alamo building and plaza, among the state's most popular tourist attractions, was closed to the public. Police guarded the property as the crowd marched nearby. Tucson, Arizona A protest Wednesday outside an ICE office in Tucson, Arizona, turned into a clash between masked security officers and demonstrators who blocked a roadway, threw balloons filled with paint and spray painted anti-ICE graffiti on the gates and walls of the facility. Video clips showed a security officer who was hit with a water bottle. Masked protesters held makeshift shields as they inched toward the security team, and a team member set off what appeared to be a flash-bang device. Anchorage, Alaska A small group of demonstrators held their fourth straight day of protests Thursday outside the Anchorage Correctional Complex, where ICE has detained nearly 40 people. Using a bullhorn aimed at the front doors of the facility, demonstrator Courtney Moore declared, "ICE out of Anchorage, ICE out of Alaska." Betsy Holley, a spokesperson with the Alaska Department of Corrections, said 39 people were in ICE custody of ICE at the Anchorage jail. The department said its facilities will be on lockdown through the weekend as a "proactive response to calls for grassroots protests across the state." No Kings' This week's protests are leading into the scheduled "No Kings" demonstrations that organisers say are planned in nearly 2,000 locations around the country, according to the movement's website. Organisers plan a flagship march and rally in Philadelphia, but no protests are scheduled to take place in Washington, DC, where the military parade will be held. In Florida, state Attorney General James Uthmeier warned that any "No Kings" protesters who become violent will be dealt with harshly. In a message sent Thursday, a Justice Department official told US attorneys across the country to prioritise cases against protesters who engage in violence and destruction. The email cites several potential federal charges, including assault, civil disorder and damage of government property. Governors and the Guard Texas Gov Greg Abbott and Missouri Gov Mike Kehoe mobilised National Guard troops in their states ahead of the weekend demonstrations. Abbott said more than 5,000 Guard troops and more than 2,000 state police would be ready to help local law enforcement if needed. Several "No Kings" rallies are planned in Texas, and there were brief clashes between protesters and police in Austin and Dallas this week. Kehoe called his decision a "precautionary measure" and did not provide specific troop levels or duties.

Raja's Killers Planned To Kill Someone Else, Pass Off Body As Sonam's: Cops

Shillong: The killers of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi had a plan to murder any woman and burn her body to pass it as that of his wife Sonam so that she would be able to be in hiding for a few more days till the truth is known, a Meghalaya police officer said. The police also found out that Raj Kushwaha, a suspected boyfriend of Sonam, was the mastermind in the murder plot, and she is the co-conspirator. On the first day of interrogation of Sonam, Raj and three others, who were arrested in connection with the killing of the Raja Raghuvanshi, also revealed that she fled from Meghalaya in a burqa and reached the Madhya Pradesh city using various modes of transport like taxi, bus and train. "The conspiracy to eliminate Raja was hatched in Indore, shortly before his wedding with Sonam on May 11, and the mastermind is Raj while the woman had agreed to the plot," East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told PTI. A few days after the wedding, Raja (29) and Sonam (24) had come to picturesque Sohra in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district and went missing on May 23. His body was found in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls on June 2, while a search continued for Sonam. She emerged in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, around 1,200 km away, in the early hours of June 9 and surrendered. The police had also arrested her alleged boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha and three others - Vishal, Akash and Anand - who, till now, were suspected to have been contract killers. "The three young people were friends, and one of them is a cousin of Raj. It was not a typical contract killing. Yes, the plan was to kill and they did it as a favour to their friend Raj," Syiem said. Raj had given them Rs 50,000 for the expenditures, he said. The planning started in February in Indore and they had thought of ways about how Sonam would disappear after the killing of Raja. "One plan was to make people believe that she would wash away by a river. Another plan was to murder any woman, burn the body and claim that it was of Sonam. However, none of the plans fructify," the police officer said. The group had come a few days before the newly-wed couple reached Assam on May 19 and they had initially planned to eliminate Raja somewhere in Guwahati. As that did not work for some reason, Sonam planned to go to Shillong and Sohra, and according to understanding, all met at Nongriat, the officer said. Syiem said they started together for Weisawdong Falls, and there all three hit Raja with a machete they bought in Assam and killed him in front of Sonam between 2 pm and 2.18 pm on May 23 before throwing the body in a gorge. Sonam gave Akash the raincoat she was wearing as his shirt had a blood spot. They left Weisawdong on scooters, and Akash threw the raincoat later as it too had blood stains. They also abandoned the two-wheeler hired by Sonam and Raja at a place, the SP said. The police recovered the raincoat and the two-wheeler when Sonam was thought to have been missing. "Raj had given Vishal a burqa which he has handed over to Sonam. She wore it, went to the Police Bazaar and took a taxi to Guwahati. From Guwahati, she reached Siliguri (in West Bengal) on a bus. From there, she took buses to go to Patna and Arah and boarded a train for Lucknow. From Lucknow, Sonam took a bus and reached Indore," he said. In the meantime, Meghalaya media interviewed a tour guide who said he had seen Sonam and Raja with three people. Raj told Sonam to leave Indore and emerge somewhere in Siliguri and claim herself as a victim of abduction. But on June 8, when Sonam had left Indore, two police teams from Meghalaya reached UP and Madhya Pradesh in civil dress. "When the first arrest (Akash) was made in UP, Raj panicked and told Sonam to call up her family and tell them she just escaped from an abduction gang. That's how this whole thing came to light in Ghazipur," Syiem said. They had thought that Raja's body would not be discovered as it was remote and the police enquiry would take one to two months. So she thought of playing the victim card. "We are recording their statements. We are questioning them. We will gather more evidence and reconstruct the crime scene," Syiem said. The officer said the police are confident to file a charge sheet in the case within the mandatory 90 days. All five were remanded to eight days of police custody on Wednesday.
