Ex-France striker Bernard Lacombe dies aged 72
Lacombe began his career with hometown club Lyon and had a brief spell at St-Etienne before joining Bordeaux, scoring 255 goals in total in the French top flight in 497 matches.
Only Argentine Delio Onnis (299) has scored more goals in Ligue 1.
Lacombe returned to Lyon after his playing career and served as manager between 1996 and 2000.
'It's with immense sadness that we learned of the death of Bernard Lacombe,' the club wrote in a statement.
'Farewell Bernard, you were our legend, the greatest of all.'
Lacombe scored 12 goals in 38 appearances for France and played in his country's 2-0 win over Spain in the 1984 European Championship final in Paris.

Sesko, who has scored 16 goals in 41 international appearances, is United's third major signing in attack following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha for £62.5m and Bryan Mbeumo for £65m with £6m in add-ons. 'The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future,' said Sesko. 'When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon.' Sesko had also been linked with Newcastle, but once again Eddie Howe's League Cup winners failed to land their target despite being able to offer European football this season, unlike Manchester United. Sesko, though, said he felt a vibrancy round the club as they seek to rebound from a desperately disappointing 2024-2025 campaign. 'From the moment that I arrived, I could feel the positive energy and family environment that the club has created,' he said. 'It is clearly the perfect place to reach my maximum level and fulfil all of my ambitions. 'I cannot wait to start learning from Ruben (Amorim) and connecting with my teammates to achieve the success that we all know we are capable of together.'

Aberdeen fans raised a giant banner of the Scottish Cup replete with red and white ribbons before kick-off in their first home game since beating Celtic on penalties to win the trophy for the first time in 35 years in May. However, there was no repeat for the Dons, who are the only side left in the Scottish Premiership without a point so far this season.

Isco suffers new leg fracture in pre-season friendly

(EPA Images pic) MADRID : Real Betis's playmaker Isco has fractured a tibia for the second time, the Seville club announced on social media today. The 33-year-old former Real Madrid star broke his leg in a friendly against Malaga yesterday. The club said the injury was a 'new non-displaced fracture to the middle third of his left fibula'. Isco, who won the Champions League four times during his spell at Real Madrid, suffered the same injury in May 2024. He returned last December and helped Betis to sixth in La Liga, and qualification for the Europa League, as well as skippering them in the Europa Conference League final where they lost 4-1 to Chelsea. His form earned a recall to the Spanish national team for the first time since 2019. He came on as a substitute and scored in the penalty shootout loss to Portugal in the Nations League final.
