Egypt's Petroleum Ministry responds to allegations of tampered octane

Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources on Monday denied social media speculations regarding the quality of octane available in local markets, including allegations of tampered octane.
The ministry confirmed in a statement that all petroleum products, including octane, are subject to strict oversight and periodic inspections throughout the production and distribution stages to ensure their compliance with Egyptian standard specifications.
The ministry explained that the results of analyzed octane samples taken from fuel stations, depots, and refineries proved their full compliance with approved specifications.
It assured that neutral inspectors from accredited international bodies conduct these tests regularly, and the results have not yet revealed any violations.
The ministry has contacted major marketing companies, such as Misr Petroleum and Cooperatives, as well as private companies, all of which confirmed that they have not received any customer complaints regarding gasoline quality.
As part of its enhanced oversight measures, the Ministry deployed additional inspection teams to collect octane samples from gas stations across the country to ensure the quality of products on the ground.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources affirmed its continued close market monitoring, calling on citizens to report any complaints or observations related to octane by calling hotline 16528.
It also emphasized its full commitment to providing high-quality petroleum products that meet citizens' needs and support the stability of the local market.
Egypt implements national petroleum inspection plan
Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk confirmed that the ministry is implementing a comprehensive nationwide inspection plan to regulate the petroleum product distribution system, ensure that subsidies reach those who deserve them, and combat any manipulation or illegal practices within the circulation of subsidized petroleum products.
He stressed in a Monday statement that the ministry's oversight agencies, in full coordination with the ministry's directorates in the governorates, are conducting daily and surprise inspection campaigns at gas stations and butane gas depots.
He pointed out that these campaigns collect random samples of petroleum products (octane of all types, diesel) and send them to the relevant central laboratories for analysis to ensure their compliance with approved standard technical specifications.
The minister explained that the goal of these strict measures is to ensure the quality of products provided to citizens and prevent any tampering, commercial fraud, or mixing of petroleum products.
He emphasized that the ministry will not hesitate to take immediate legal action against violators and refer discovered cases to the Public Prosecution.
Farouk emphasized the importance of citizens as partners in community oversight, calling for the prompt reporting of any violations or suspected tampering.
He explained that the ministry receives complaints through its official channels and deals with them with the utmost seriousness and decisiveness.

New Wave of Book Kiosks Brings Affordable Reading to Rural Egypt

The initiative supports affordable access to books in rural Egypt through the Haya Karima Foundation. Jun 02, 2025 The Ministry of Culture is launching 45 book kiosks this June as part of the ongoing 'Your Book' project, in collaboration with the Haya Karima Foundation. Timed to coincide with the anniversary of the June 30th revolution, the rollout is designed to promote reading in rural areas by offering books at affordable prices. These kiosks will function as permanent mini-libraries in underserved villages. The project expands on an earlier prototype set up at the Cairo Opera House and builds on 333 kiosks already established through the Ministry's partnership with the Haya Karima Foundation. Books stocked at the kiosks come from the General Egyptian Book Organization and other Ministry-affiliated publishers, with selections curated in partnership with the Publishers Union to ensure quality and relevance. The kiosks themselves are tailored to fit into broader village beautification plans, offering both visual appeal and commercial potential. Book prices are kept low to reflect local income levels, while maintaining high standards in content and printing.

Egyptian Startups Secure $228 Million in First Five Months of 2025

Egyptian Startups Secure $228 Million in First Five Months of 2025 Egyptian startups have attracted $228 million in venture capital and debt financing from January to May 2025, according to a statement from the Ministerial Group for Entrepreneurship. The figures mark a 130% year-on-year increase in disclosed investment volume, reflecting continued growth in Egypt's startup ecosystem despite ongoing economic challenges. In total, 16 deals were recorded during the period, with 11 of them publicly disclosing investment amounts that collectively reached $156 million. In addition to equity investments, two notable debt financing deals were secured: proptech platform Nawy raised $23 million, while fintech firm MNT-Halan secured $49 million. The proptech sector led in terms of total investment volume, accounting for 33% of all capital raised, while fintech topped the charts in deal count, with five transactions comprising 32% of total investment value. H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Egypt's Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation and head of the Ministerial Group for Entrepreneurship, stated that the funding growth reflects continued momentum in Egypt's startup market. Dr. Al-Mashat attributed this progress to government-led efforts to improve the business climate and support private sector growth through targeted structural reforms. Dr. Al-Mashat confirmed that work is currently underway on a national Startup Charter, alongside a range of funding initiatives and financial incentives to promote investment, including tax benefits for startups with annual revenues under EGP 20 million. In addition to new funding, the local startup ecosystem saw a number of key acquisition deals. These included Dubizzle's acquisition of used car marketplace Hatla2ee, as well as the acquisition of digital payments platform Fatora by MaxAB-Wasoko. The Ministerial Group for Entrepreneurship was launched by the Egyptian government to coordinate startup policy across relevant ministries and to develop initiatives that foster an enabling ecosystem for entrepreneurship. As part of this mandate, the group aims to promote Egypt's visibility on the global startup map while supporting sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
