Israel issues strongest threat yet against Iran after Houthi missile attack

JERUSALEM - Israel issued its strongest threat yet against Iran on May 8 , warning it would do to it what it has done to Hamas in Gaza after an attack on Ben Gurion airport by Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
Along with Hezbollah and Hamas, Yemen's Houthi rebels are part of Iran's 'axis of resistance' against Israel and its ally the United States.
They claim their repeated attacks on Israel and on shipping in the Red Sea are in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where Hamas sparked a war in October 2023 by launching an unprecedented attack on Israel.
Israel hit back against the Houthis' attack on its main airport on May 4 by striking the airport in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, as well as three power stations in the impoverished country.
'I warn ... Iranian leaders who finance, arm and exploit the Houthi terrorist organisation: the proxy system is terminated and the axis of evil has collapsed,' Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a statement.
'You are directly responsible. What we have done to Hezbollah in Beirut, to Hamas in Gaza, to (now ousted Syrian president Bashar) Assad in Damascus, we will do to you in Tehran too.'
Warning that Israel would not allow 'any entity to harm Israel', Mr Katz added: 'Israel should be able to defend itself... against any threat and against any enemy. This has been the case with several challenges in the past, and it will continue to be the case in future.
'Anyone who attacks us will be severely struck.'
Lebanon, Gaza, Yemen
In Syria, an Islamist-led rebel alliance toppled Assad in December, effectively cutting off the supply route from Iran to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Lebanon's Hezbollah movement, like the Houthis, also began cross-border attacks on Israel following the 2023 attack by Hamas.
In a year of hostilities across the Lebanese-Israeli border that ended with a November truce, the Israeli army all but crushed Hezbollah.
Hamas's leadership has been decimated in the Gaza war and much of the territory that the movement rules has been destroyed.
Iran has denied supporting the Houthis in their attack on Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv.
Israel hit back against the Huthis with strikes on the airport in the rebel-held capital Sanaa as well as on power stations in and around the capital.
The United States and the Houthis reached a ceasefire agreement, mediator Oman announced on May 6 , saying the deal would ensure 'freedom of navigation' in the Red Sea where the rebels have attacked shipping.
The Houthis have vowed to continue targeting Israel and Israeli ships in the Red Sea despite the deal that ended weeks of intense US strikes on Yemen.
Longtime foes Iran and Israel have attacked each other directly for the first time since the October 2023 attack.
Hamas's attack left Israel feeling vulnerable, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed two days later to 'change the Middle East' to protect the country from any repetition.
Hamas's attack resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
Of the 251 people abducted from Israel that day, 58 are still being held in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli army says are dead. Hamas is also holding the body of an Israeli soldier killed during a previous war in Gaza, in 2014.
The Israeli offensive launched in retaliation for the Hamas attack has killed at least 52,653 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run health ministry, which are considered reliable by the United Nations. AFP

Sensitive Israeli documents obtained by Iran to be unveiled soon, minister says

Sensitive Israeli documents obtained by Iran to be unveiled soon, minister says DUBAI - Sensitive Israeli documents obtained by Tehran should be unveiled soon, Minister of Intelligence Esmail Khatib told state TV on Sunday, describing them as a "treasure trove" which will strengthen Iran's offensive capabilities. Iranian state media reported on Saturday that Iranian intelligence agencies had obtained a large trove of sensitive Israeli documents. Khatib said these were related to Israel's nuclear facilities and its relations with the United States, Europe and other countries, and to its defensive capabilities. There was no immediate official comment from Israel. It was not clear whether the information breach was linked to a reported hacking of an Israeli nuclear research centre last year which Tehran is only disclosing now amid heightened tensions over its nuclear programme. "The transfer of this treasure trove was time-consuming and required security measures. Naturally, the transfer methods will remain confidential but the documents should be unveiled soon," Khatib said, adding that in terms of volume, "talking of thousands of documents would be an understatement." In 2018, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israeli agents had seized a huge "archive" of Iranian documents that showed Tehran had done more nuclear work than previously known. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to bomb Iran if Tehran did not come to an agreement with Washington over its nuclear programme. But Trump in April reportedly blocked a planned Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear sites in favour of negotiating a deal with Tehran. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that abandoning uranium enrichment was "100%" against Iran's interests, rejecting a central U.S. demand in talks to resolve a decades-long dispute over Tehran's nuclear ambitions. Western powers say Iran is refining uranium to a high degree of fissile purity close to the level suitable for atomic bomb fuel. Iran has long denied seeking nuclear weapons. Iran authorities expand dog walking ban

TEHRAN: Iranian authorities have expanded a ban on walking dogs in public to multiple cities nationwide, citing public health, social order and safety concerns, domestic media reported on Sunday (Jun 8). The ban – which echoes a 2019 police directive that barred walking dogs in Tehran – was expanded to Ilam city in the west on Sunday, according to reports. At least 17 other cities introduced similar bans in recent days, including Isfahan in the centre and Kerman in the south. Owning and walking dogs has been a contentious topic since the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran, though there is no law outrightly banning dog ownership. Many religious scholars however consider petting dogs or coming into contact with their saliva as "najis" or ritually impure, while some officials view them as a symbol of Western cultural influence. Local authorities have periodically introduced bans on walking dogs in public spaces or carrying them in vehicles as part of a wider campaign to discourage their ownership. Enforcing the restrictions has been largely inconsistent, as many owners continue to walk their dogs in Tehran and elsewhere across Iran. On Sunday, the reformist Etemad newspaper quoted an official from Ilam city as saying that "legal action will be taken against violators", without elaborating. On Saturday, the state newspaper Iran said the latest measures are aimed at "maintaining public order, ensuring safety and protecting public health". "Dog walking is a threat to public health, peace and comfort," said Abbas Najafi, prosecutor of the western city of Hamedan, as quoted by Iran newspaper. In 2021, some 75 lawmakers condemned pet ownership as a "destructive social problem", saying it could "gradually change the Iranian and Islamic way of life". In 2017, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that "keeping dogs for reasons other than herding, hunting and guard dogs is considered reprehensible".

Israeli military says it struck Hamas member in southern Syria

CAIRO - The Israeli military said on Sunday that it struck a member of the Palestinian militant group Hamas in southern Syria's Mazraat Beit Jin, days after Israel carried out its first airstrikes in the country in nearly a month. Hamas did not immediately comment on the strike. Israel said on Tuesday it hit weapons belonging to the government in retaliation for the firing of two projectiles towards Israel for the first time under the country's new leadership. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz held Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharaa accountable. Damascus in response said reports of the shelling were unverified, reiterating that Syria does not pose a threat to any regional party. A little known group named "Martyr Muhammad Deif Brigades," an apparent reference to Hamas' military leader who was killed in an Israeli strike in 2024, reportedly claimed responsibility for the shelling. Reuters, however, could not independently verify the claim. Israel and Syria have recently engaged in direct talks to calm tensions, marking a significant development in ties between states that have been on opposite sides of conflict in the Middle East for decade.
