6-lane corridor, flyover: Revamp for Hero Honda Chowk link in 2 years

Time of India11-08-2025
Gurgaon: NHAI has set April 2027 as the deadline for completing upgrade of the key arterial stretch between Umang Bharadwaj Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk on NH-8. The project to revamp the 2km stretch, on which commuters brave potholes and face traffic snarls every day, is expected to cost around Rs 200 crore.
While the project is being executed by NHAI, GMDA is bearing its cost.
According to NHAI, the preparatory phase will focus on relocating underground cables, pipelines, and other services to clear the way for construction. "We are targeting to complete utility shifting by March 2026 and start the civil work after that. The project has been given a completion date of April 2027," an official said. Utility shifting, including shifting of drainage lines and HVPNL transmission lines, was started by NHAI in May this year.
Under the project, the road will be widened to a six-lane corridor with a service road on both sides, along with a flyover at Umang Bharadwaj Chowk to streamline the traffic flow. Earlier, GMDA asked NHAI to make a provision of two vehicular underpasses along the stretch to cater to traffic. However, NHAI official did not comment on this.

The existing stretch between these two intersections is in a dilapidated state, residents said, adding that it becomes inundated for several days at stretch in monsoon.
"It is a nightmare to navigate the road. During monsoon, the condition becomes worse as the water doesn't drain out for days and potholes turn into mini ponds," said Pawan Yadav, a resident of Sector 10A.
Another commuter, Manish Kataria, a resident of Sector 9, said, "I changed my car's suspension twice in the last year because of this stretch. It needs urgent repairs."
An NHAI official said repair work was going on simultaneously.
"We started the utility shifting work and are also repairing damaged portions on priority so that the stretch remains motorable until construction begins," he said.
Hero Honda Chowk is a major intersection on NH-8, connecting Delhi and Jaipur traffic with Gurgaon's industrial hubs, while Umang Bharadwaj Chowk is a critical link to Pataudi Road, Dwarka Expressway, and the city's industrial area. Despite the opening of the Hero Honda flyover in 2017, surface-level congestion persisted, and the adjoining stretch towards Umang Bharadwaj Chowk became a traffic bottleneck.
Approved in 2017, as part of a broader plan to upgrade the 5.6 km stretch between Hero Honda Chowk and Dwarka Expressway, over the years, the revamp project faced repeated delays due to indecision on the design and modality, casting a shadow on the upgradation of this key stretch.
"I fail to understand why the civic authorities are dragging their feet on the redevelopment of the 2km stretch. Because of the delay, the construction cost will only increase, adding the burden on the exchequer," said Pradeep Agrawal, a resident of Sector 10.

Vyttila Jn may get Kerala's tallest elevated highway

Kochi: Vyttila Junction may soon witness a one-of-its-kind engineering feat, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) considering the construction of an elevated highway 32 metres above ground—soaring above the Kochi Metro line. If approved, the structure would become one of the tallest elevated highways in Kerala, transforming traffic flow at the state's busiest junction. A similar model—where the elevated highway passes above the Metro Phase II (Pink) line—was first proposed at Palarivattom. The latest revised alignment report, prepared by the Highway Engineering Consultant for the Edappally–Aroor elevated highway, now recommends adopting the same model at Vyttila. A comparable proposal had earlier been explored at Edappally, where the Metro viaduct crosses above the flyover. That plan was eventually dropped, with NHAI instead opting for two underpasses near Oberon Mall and Lulu Mall to ease congestion. For Vyttila, however, officials say the elevated highway will run parallel to the existing Kundanoor flyover, rising above the Metro viaduct. The revised alignment report has been submitted to NHAI's Kochi project office and will soon be forwarded to Delhi for clearance ahead of DPR preparation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Born 1939-1969 Receive 16 Benefits This Month If They Ask Super Saving Online Undo Officials admit the construction will be technically challenging and costly, but unavoidable. "The cost of a 32-metre-high elevated highway will be substantial, but it is the only viable solution at Vyttila. We will recommend the alignment to NHAI's central office soon," an official said. The urgency stems from the traffic load on the Edappally–Vyttila–Aroor stretch of NH 66, which carries over one lakh passenger car units (PCUs) daily — the highest vehicular density in Kerala. With inspections confirming that only an elevated highway can handle the growing traffic, NHAI has prioritized this model as part of the NH 66 six-laning project. The corridor is also strategically critical. The stretch connects to the proposed Angamaly–Kundannur bypass, the Kochi–Theni National Highway and the NH link to Willingdon Island. Traffic volumes are expected to rise further with the completion of six-lane works on 23 adjoining stretches, including the Kodungallur–Edappally corridor and the Aroor–Thuravoor elevated highway, both slated for completion by late 2025. Transport dept to send e-challan notices via WhatsApp chatbot

1 2 Lucknow: It's time to check your mobile phone for any e-challan notices that you may have received from the state transport department's WhatsApp Chatbot service (8005441222), and pay the amount. The transport department has taken up a massive exercise to realise challans pending for 2024-25. As there are over one-third of total pending challans where the mobile numbers are either wrong or missing in registration details of the vehicles, the department has advised owners to check the status of challans against their vehicles on the portal themselves and make payment to avoid stricter punishment. "Currently, we are sending notices for challans pending for 2024-25. Later, we will start a similar exercise for 2022 and 2023," transport commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh said. A total of 36 lakh e-challan notices may be sent by the department directly to vehicle owners' mobile numbers through its WhatsApp chatbot service, which is a blue tick verified service and approved by the central govt, for three financial years starting 2022-23. Over 14 lakh notices will be sent for 2024-25 alone. The biggest defaulters are those who have not provided mobile numbers in vehicle registration details or have given wrong numbers. While notices may not be sent to them as of now, they may face severe punishment under the MV Act, besides legal action. According to transport department, during 2024–25, a total of 2,701,786 e-challans were issued in the state, amounting to Rs 1,411.2 crore. Of these, 22,11,244 challans remain unpaid, which is 81.8% of the total, with outstanding dues of Rs 790.45 crore (56%). Pending challans have been categorised into three categories: multi-offender vehicles, two-wheelers, and four-wheelers. Another category is of around one-third of vehicles that have wrong or no mobile numbers in registration details. Four-wheelers are the biggest defaulters, comprising over 53.9% of the total unpaid challans amounting to around Rs 552.66 crore. The average is Rs 4,641 per challan. Two-wheelers are the second biggest defaulters. There are 2,79,296 multi-offender vehicles with 8,71,353 pending challans (39.4%) amounting to Rs 338.76 crore. Similarly, 2,21,538 mobile numbers are linked to more than one challan, covering 10,66,151 challans (48.2%) and dues of Rs 432.94 crore. At least 8,06,970 pending challans (36.5%) with Rs 270.6 crore in dues lack valid contact numbers. Within these, 'NULL' entries account for 384,301 challans, worth Rs 128.25 crore, and numbers with fewer than 10 digits account for 4,21,029 challans worth Rs 141.9 crore. It is for the first time that any govt department is sending e-challan notices through WhatsApp Chatbot service, which also ensures cyber security. The department is also sensitising people on facts like notices will come only from one number 8005441222 with a blue tick and that payments will be accepted only through official govt portal ( No payment should be made via QR codes, UPI, or bank accounts. Notably, in June 2023, the UP govt had cancelled all pending challans issued between Jan 1, 2017, and Dec 31, 2021. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). New flyovers fail to clear Ranchi's traffic gridlock

1 2 Ranchi: Even after the inauguration of three major flyovers in the state capital, traffic chaos continues to plague Ranchi. Congestion on Ratu Road, Lalpur, Kutchery, and Kantatoli remains severe, while near Siramtoli, jams are routine because of the ongoing construction of a connecting corridor. "Every evening, it takes me 40 minutes to cover what should actually be a 10-minute ride. The flyover is good, but below it, the market is so crowded that traffic moves inch by inch," said Ramesh Singh, an autorickshaw driver who operates on Ratu Road. Daily commuters echo the same frustration. "We thought the Kantatoli and Siramtoli flyovers would cut down our travel time, but diversions and unfinished stretches only make things worse," said Anjali Mishra, who drives daily from Lalpur to Harmu. NHAI regional officer M T Attarde said, "We received reports suggesting a lack of public awareness. On Ratu Road, jams are caused by markets where supplies from other districts are delivered. To resolve this, we may have to talk to RMC for market arrangements. It will ease the traffic downside." Traffic jams near Siramtoli are caused due to the construction of the connecting flyover between Kantatoli and Siramtoli. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo People are forced to take diversions even for simple routes. "The half-finished connecting corridor between Kantatoli and Siramtoli forces vehicles to take long detours, funnelling traffic into already saturated by-lanes," said Ram Naresh, another auto driver. The 4.18 km-long Ratu Road flyover, built at Rs 291 crore was inaugurated in July 2025; the 2.4 km-long Kantatoli flyover, built at Rs 224 crore was opened in October 2024; and the 2.34 km-long, Rs 355-crore Siramtoli flyover launched in June 2025. Lalpur main road remains one of the city's worst choke points even after new flyovers. Vehicles pile up near the traffic signal because service lanes are narrow and encroached. "From Lalpur to Circular Road, it's a nightmare. Sometimes I'm late to college even though I leave 30 minutes early," said Priya Sharma, a student of St. Xavier's College.
