All 10 batters retire out at the same time in never-before-seen cricket tactic… but bizarrely still win match

The Sun10-05-2025

TEN batters all retired out without a ball being bowled in bizarre never-seen-before cricket tactics.
And yet it worked a masterstroke as the team still won their World Cup qualifier.
1
United Arab Emirates faced Qatar in Thailand, needing a win to stay in control of topping their Women's 2026 T20 World Cup Asian qualifying group.
Only one side progresses to the Super 3 stage of Asia'a qualifying to try and earn a spot in the Global Qualifier to then make their way to next year's tournament in England.
The UAE openers put on a whopping 192 without losing a wicket after 16 overs.
However, the risk of rain threatened to put a result in the match in jeopardy.
In T20 cricket, a team cannot declare in their innings like in Test cricket.
And that meant the UAE's innings had to be completed.
So their coach Ahmed Raza had the genius idea to get ten batters to retire out.
As a result, UAE's openers both surrendered their unbeaten scores before eight further team-mates walked out fully kitted up and retired, one after the other in barely believable scenes.
UAE went from 192-0 after 16 overs to 192 all out in 16 overs - with their innings all over despite Qatar's bowlers failing to take a single wicket.
Qatar, ranked 52 in the world rankings, were unable to withstand the pressure from the UAE bowlers in response.
And Qatar were bowled all out for 29 in 11.1 overs, securing a 163-run win for UAE.
Coach Raza said: "Whilst the innings was going on we started hearing thunder and slight drizzle started.
"With the thunder and drizzle we just had to make sure the whole game was played because the weather has been around.
"At the start of our bowling innings, it was already drizzling and we were scared of the thunderstorm.
"I went to the umpires and checked whether we could declare but in white-ball cricket you cannot declare.
"I then asked the match referee if I could retire my whole team out.
"There was not enough time. It was all done purely to get a result.
"By doing this I meant no disrespect to anyone involved, our opposition.
"Everything that happened was within the laws and was well communicated with the match referee.
"This extraordinary series of events should not overshadow our captain's hundred and our opening stand of 192 and our bowlers doing the remaining job."

Heimir Hallgrimsson seeks answers after disappointing draw

Heimir Hallgrimsson was left with more questions than answers after watching his Republic of Ireland side scrap out a 0-0 friendly draw in Luxembourg. The visitors twice hit the woodwork at the Stade de Luxembourg but needed two saves from keeper Max O'Leary, making his senior international debut six years after first being called up, to emerge with something to show for their efforts. Advertisement It will be a very different team which the Icelander sends out for the opening qualifier against Hungary in Dublin in September, but it will also need to be a very different performance if Ireland are to launch their campaign with the kind of result they will need to stand a chance of making it to the finals. Asked what he would take from the game, head coach Hallgrimsson, who presided over a far more impressive 1-1 draw with Senegal on Friday night, said: 'Firstly, you always use these games to get answers to questions. We got some answers – maybe more negative answers than positive from this tonight. 'The take from this is obviously when we go in September when the serious games start, we play a higher-ranked team first at home and then a lower-ranked team (Armenia) away just like we did now. We need to learn from this performance before September. 'We can take a lot of things. Mostly it's psychological or mental or whatever for the preparation. I know this is end-of-season so now everyone is in their off-season probably thinking, 'I don't want to get injured' or whatever they are thinking. Advertisement 'But there's no excuse for a bad performance. Even if we would have scored in the end, I think still the performance was not good enough.' But for O'Leary, who saved from Danel Sinani before the break and substitute Vincent Thill after it, Ireland could have been looking at a repeat of their embarrassment when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Luxembourg in a World Cup qualifier in March 2021. Nathan Collins and substitute Jack Taylor hit the post and the bar respectively for the visitors, but they were pushed all the way by a side ranked 91st in the world by FIFA and Hallgrimsson was full of praise for the Bristol City keeper. He said: 'We have known that all these years, probably. I have worked with him for a year and he's always shown up, he's always done well in training, he's always supported the keeper that has been number one – which is Caoimhin [Kelleher] since I came and Gavin [Bazunu] before I came. Read More Luxembourg boss Luc Holtz was pleased with what he saw from his team as they gear up for September's opening qualifier against Northern Ireland in the Grand Duchy. Holtz said: 'I'm very happy with the performance of my team. We managed to give big problems to Ireland. Ireland has a fantastic football team which plays with high speed and intensity and we managed to find solutions. 'This was a really good test for the upcoming match we play in September against Northern Ireland.' Advertisement

Uruguay near World Cup qualification with 2-0 win over Venezuela

MONTEVIDEO, June 10 (Reuters) - Uruguay took a step closer to securing a 2026 World Cup spot with a 2-0 home victory over Venezuela at the Estadio Centenario on Tuesday, a victory which also snapped a four-match winless run in South American qualifiers. Uruguay dominated much of the first half but struggled to break down a well-organised Venezuelan defence until Rodrigo Aguirre put the hosts ahead in the 42nd minute, heading in at the far post from a Maxi Araujo corner. Giorgian De Arrascaeta doubled Uruguay's lead just two minutes into the second half, firing a superb shot into the top-left corner to seal a win that secures Marcelo Bielsa's side of at least an inter-confederation playoff berth. In other qualifiers, Colombia led already-qualified Argentina 1-0 at halftime thanks to a Luis Díaz goal, while second-placed Ecuador can secure a World Cup spot if they avoid defeat in Peru. In Sao Paulo, Paraguay will qualify with a win or a draw against Brazil, while the hosts can book their place in the tournament with a victory.

Harry Brook revels in leading ‘awesome' England after West Indies clean sweep

Harry Brook believes England's resurgent white-ball side have the talent to become 'the most dominant team in the world'. Brook has enjoyed a perfect start as limited-overs captain, winning all six games against the West Indies to overhaul the fortunes of a group that lost their last eight matches in the hangdog final days of Jos Buttler's tenure. Buoyed by matching 3-0 scorelines in the ODI and T20 formats, sealing the latter with a comfortable 37-run win in Southampton, Brook talked up England's chances of becoming a force to be reckoned with. With a T20 World Cup coming early next year, it is a challenge they will soon get the chance to meet. 'It's been a pretty good start hasn't it? I think almost every player in this team is a world-beater,' he said after his side scored 248 for three – the joint highest T20 international total on English soil. 'We want to get to a stage now where we're winning series in the first two or three games and we're nailing them in the others. We want to clean sweep people. We want to be the most dominant team in the world. 'I've said plenty of times the depth that we have in batting is just awesome. The top three, four, five can go hard and get us up to totals like we saw here. Then with the skills that the bowlers possess as well, it's worked beautifully. 'I feel like we're just such a team. I've never really felt that apart from in the Test side.' Brook prioritised international cricket and opted out of a lucrative Indian Premier League contract earlier this year, incurring a potential three-year ban having originally put his name into the auction. It is a lead he now wants others to follow. He said: 'Absolutely, that's what we want to try and do. We want people to almost turn around and say, 'I want to play for England and I'm happy to sit out of the odd franchise competition to do it'. 'I personally think playing for England is the pinnacle of cricket and to play for your country is the best thing you can do.' That is a luxury the West Indies can only dream of, following the premature retirement of Nicholas Pooran at just 29 years old. Financially, they lack the muscle to compete with the riches on offer in some leagues, but that is not an issue England face so acutely. Competition is only likely to increase if the case of Phil Salt and Jamie Smith is anything to go by. Salt has missed the West Indies series following the birth of his first child, but did make a whistle stop return to India for the IPL final, which he won with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His place went to Smith, who scored 60 off just 26 balls at the Utilita Bowl to threaten the pecking order. 'The talent that we've got in English cricket in white ball cricket is just phenomenal. For Salty to miss out on a series and Smudge to do what he's done this series is just mega,' Brook added. 'The batting depth we have is just awesome.'
