Brett Pesce Stands Out at Shoulder Check Showcase – for More Than Just His Play

Yahoo3 days ago
New Jersey Devils defenseman Brett Pesce made headlines following his appearance at the Shoulder Check Showcase on July 24, 2025.
The annual charity event, founded to honor the late Hayden Thorsen, promotes mental health awareness in the hockey community. Thorsen was a 16-year-old goalie from the tri-state area who tragically died by suicide on May 26, 2022. He dreamed of playing hockey at the next level, and this showcase continues his legacy with the powerful message: "Reach Out. Check In. Make Contact."
While the event is typically lighthearted, one moment brought unexpected tension. New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe made headlines of his own, nearly leveling Pesce into the boards with a near-hit, taking the 'make contact' part of the slogan a little too literally.
The Shoulder Check Showcase brings together players from across the NHL, emphasizing unity and support beyond team rivalries. Pesce was the only Devils player in attendance, while six New York Rangers participated, including Rempe.
Despite the charitable nature of the game, Rempe's play stood out, particularly his physical exchange with Pesce.
Rempe, known for his enforcer style, has racked up 138 penalty minutes in just 59 NHL games. The 23-year-old recently signed a two-year, $1.95 million extension with the Rangers. While some fans in the crowd cheered his gritty play, others criticized his actions as out of place for an event centered on mental health awareness.
Despite the debatable moment, the showcase delivered on its greater mission. In a powerful scene at Terry Conners Rink, a sold-out crowd placed their hands on each other's shoulders and recited the event's six-word slogan aloud in unison, symbolizing support, community, and solidarity.
Rob Thorsen, Hayden's father, reflected on the moment in an interview with NHL.com:
"We thought it would be cool if we could get people to put their hands on each other's shoulders," Thorsen said. "When it actually happened, it was palpable. Everybody left feeling it, and that was awesome."
In the end, the Shoulder Check Showcase reminded the hockey world that no one has to face their battles alone. Rivalries faded, teams mixed, and the sport united for a cause far bigger than the scoreboard.

The 'Folk Hero' is back: Veteran kicker Nick Folk signs with the Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The Folk Hero is back in The Big Apple. Veteran kicker Nick Folk signed with the New York Jets on Tuesday, reuniting with the franchise for which he played for seven seasons from 2010 through 2016. The 40-year-old Folk will compete with rookie Harrison Mevis for the kicking job this season for new head coach Aaron Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Rookie Caden Davis, who was competing with Mevis, was waived by New York earlier in the day. 'Listen, he is a very established kicker in this league,' Glenn said of Folk. 'When you go back and you look at his stats from the last couple of years, man, they've been above board. And I've said this from the beginning: Anybody that can help us win games, man, we're going to take a look at that.' Folk was nicknamed 'Folk Hero' during his first stint with the Jets for his ability to make crucial kicks, particularly during the second of New York's consecutive runs to the AFC championship game under Rex Ryan in the 2010 season. His 729 points rank second on the Jets' franchise list, trailing only Pat Leahy (1,470). In 104 games with New York, Folk was 175 of 213 on field-goal attempts (82.2%) and 204 of 206 on extra points. 'I'm happy that he chose us, all right,' Glenn said, 'to be a part of what we're trying to do.' Folk kicked the last two seasons for Tennessee, which chose to move on from him in the offseason when the Titans signed Joey Slye. Folk previously played four years for New England, where he had a career resurgence. He was a sixth-round draft pick of Dallas in 2007 out of Arizona and was selected to the Pro Bowl as a rookie. After three years with the Cowboys, he signed a free agent deal with the Jets in 2010. His 56-yard field goal that season set a franchise that has since been eclipsed. Folk booted a 32-yarder with 3 seconds left to beat Indianapolis in the AFC wild-card round. Folk signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent in 2017 and struggled with an injury before being released. He was out of football until signing with Arizona of the Alliance of American Football in 2019. In other roster moves Tuesday, the Jets signed running back Lawrance Toafili and offensive lineman Liam Fornadel and waived/injured center Gus Hartwig, who left practice Monday with a knee injury. ___ AP NFL:

Former Jets Teammate Sends Stern Warning to Aaron Rodgers

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Aaron Rodgers played the last two years with the New York Jets. In both of those years, the team underperformed and that led to the two sides parting ways this offseason. Now, the future Hall of Fame quarterback is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Shockingly, Rodgers and the Jets will not have to wait long to face off against each other. New York and the Steelers will play in Week 1. Both sides will be out to prove something. Rodgers will want to show that the Jets made a mistake by giving up on him, while New York will be looking to prove that without him, they can get back to being a playoff-caliber contender. Read more: Chicago Bears Connected as Suitor in Micah Parsons Trade Scenario Will McDonald, one of New York's pass rushers, is hoping to sack his former quarterback. "I always wanted to sack Rodgers from when I was a little let me not say that cause as a little kid I wasn't even interested in playing football. I did watch him though, I watched him a lot," McDonald said. There could not be a clearer warning for Rodgers. He is going to be facing a team that wants to make him fail. The Jets want to defeat him and prove that they made the right decision to move away from Rodgers and bring in Justin Fields to replace him. During the 2024 NFL season, Rodgers proved that he still has good football left in him. He completed 63 percent of his pass attempts for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, while playing in all 17 games. Being able to produce those numbers one year removed from a torn Achilles was an impressive showing. The Steelers want to win a Super Bowl and they made aggressive moves to pursue that goal. Outside of signing Rodgers as a free agent, the front office went out and traded for DK Metcalf, Jalen Ramsey, and Jonnu Smith. Needless to say, Week 1 is going to be pure football entertainment. Rodgers will be going up against his former team and that former team is hoping to make him suffer through a miserable game. Details emerge about Little League coach in hot water over heated dugout scene

Little League is all just good fun, right? One Little League softball coach is under fire after she was recently caught on ESPN's broadcast putting her hands on a player, appearing to shush her in a disciplinary manner. But the incident has become less straightforward, as it appears that it happened between a mother and daughter: Camden-Wyoming (Delaware) head coach Shani Benson and pitcher Shai Benson. At the end of the second inning in last week's Delaware-New Jersey clash, Benson's team entered the dugout as she began coaching them. It quickly escalated as the player, appearing to be Benson's daughter, spoke back to her mother and was quickly shushed with a stern finger to the lips that forced her into a full lean-back. 4 Shai (left) and Shani Benson were interviewed after winning against New Jersey and punching their ticket to the regional championship. Delaware Sports Network 'It's never good to put one's finger/hand on anyone, period! It's a bad look even if it's her kid!' one X user wrote about the incident. 'Regardless of anything else, she wouldn't coach another game. Ever,' another wrote. Others on X felt differently about the incident. 4 Shani Benson looks on as her daughter, Shai, argues her. @plankshow/X 'This is what snowflakes pass as physical assault nowadays? She put her finger over her mouth and told her to be quiet,' a user commented. 'There had been a collision at 1B right before this and this girl was upset about it & talking trash. Coach was telling her to be quiet.' 'I just don't understand the complaints. She didn't hit the girl, she put her hand over her mouth and told her to be quiet,' another said. 'That's what a responsible adult should do when their daughter is running their mouth.' It's apparent, given the split response on X, the situation toes the line of what is acceptable in a setting where the discipline is on display for an entire team and, in this case, a world of viewers at home. 4 Shani Benson quickly reacted to her daughter by walking toward her to shush her. @plankshow/X 4 Shani Benson puts her fingers to Shai Benson's lips to shush her. @plankshow/X However, the mother-daughter development adds to the fallout of an already controversial situation. Delaware went on to win the game, 3-1, to reach the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship, where Pennsylvania took the Bensons and Co. down, 5-4.
