Kerry manager Mark Bourke relieved after ‘topsy-turvy' win over Cork, as Emma Costello re-joins squad
Emma Costello, a 2023 All Star nominee who took time out in 2024, has re-joined the Kerry panel, with manager Mark Bourke describing the Firies woman as 'a Rolls Royce of a player'

Mark Bourke might have donned Arthur Daley's best sheepskin coat and trilby at half time and puffed on a Cuban cigar before strolling into the dressing room and declaring - 'easy, innit?'
He didn't of course. The Na Gaeil man is the polar opposite to the George Cole car salesman character in the old TV series Mindar (older readers will remember), but he would have been forgiven if he had done so as throughout the first half of the Munster LGFA SFC round one game in Cloughduv, Kerry played the type of football that Bourke wants them to. And had run up a handsome 11-point lead at the interval.

Substitute Danielle O'Leary catches the eye as Kerry see off spirited Mayo
Danielle O'Leary struck for four points off the bench and Siofra O'Shea also hit four as All-Ireland champions Kerry overcame a spirited Mayo at Austin Stack Park in this Group 2 Round 1 encounter. Kerry, playing with a very strong breeze into the Dunnes Stores end of the ground, made the brighter start and found themselves four points to the good after 13 minutes. Mixing long and short ball into O'Shea in the full forward line the hosts got off the mark 35 seconds in when midfielder Anna Galvin pointed from distance. Caoimhe Evans found O'Shea with a long ball and she punched over in the sixth minute before adding her second two minutes later following a sweeping move. Aishling O'Connell then popped over through the middle to put Kerry four ahead. Mayo finally started to get their hands on the ball around the middle of the field, with Erin Murray showing well, and their reward came in the 13th minute when a shot for a point from Reape fell short and was fielded inside by Clodagh Keane. Keane's initial effort was blocked by Emma Costello but Knockmore player gathered the rebound and finished expertly past Mary Ellen Bolger. Kerry responded with O'Shea's second point of the game, before Reape responded for the visitors. Carmody slotted over for Kerry, before Julia Gawalkiewicz made a smart save at the feet of the energetic O'Shea. Sinead Walsh then hit two brilliant individual points for Mayo before O'Shea struck for her third score of the half, and Kerry's third from outside the big arc, to see the hosts take a tentative 0-7 to 1-3 lead in at half time. O'Leary was introduced at the interval and pointed a couple of minutes after a fine effort from Niamh Carmody, Kerry taking advantage of the yellow carded Reape, who saw the sin bin following a charge into Carmody. Walsh notched her third of the game from a free, but O'Leary responded for Kerry in the 40th minute with her second of the contest after good work from Ní Chonchúir and Anna Galvin to see Kerry lead by 0-10 to 1-4, the kingdom scoring 3 without reply during Reape's absence. O'Leary and Galvin tacked on further scores as a misfiring Mayo failed to add to to their second half single score. O'Leary rounded off the scoring as Kerry finished comprehensive six-point winners. The Kingdom travel to play Munster rivals Cork next Saturday whilst Mayo have a week off before entertaining the rebels on 21 June. Kerry: M.E. Half time subs the difference for Kerry in dominant second half display to see off Mayo
TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship Group 2: Kerry 0-13 Mayo 1-4 All-Ireland champions Kerry made a successful opening round defence of their title when they proved too strong for a spirited Mayo side earning a hard fought win at Austin Stack Park this afternoon. Kerry lined out without four starters, Deirdre Kearney, Aoife Dillane, Danielle O'Leary and Rachel Dwyer while Mayo also made four changes with Ella Brennan, Ciara Whyte, Ava McDonnell and Alannah Devereux missing out. But once Kerry introduced Danielle O'Leary for the second half she made Mayo pay with four points from play and the Westerners never looked like causing a shock. Kerry had the wind in the opening half and did not make the most of it as they struggled to gain primary possession at midfield. Anna Galvin gave the Kingdom the dream start with a point inside the opening minute and doubled their total when Siofra O'Shea finished a Caoimhe Evans pass with a superb point. O'Shea and Aisling O'Connell added points for Kerry but they were rocked back in the 13th minute when a high Hannah Reape effort for a point dropped short and though Clodagh Keane's initial effort was saved by Emma Costello, Keane finished the rebound to the net. Katie Brosnan then converted a free but Mayo dominated possession for the remainder of the half with Reape, Erin Murray, and Danielle Caldwell causing the Kerry defence problems. Two points from Sinead Walsh closed the gap to a single point at the break, 0-7 to 1-3. Kerry manager Mark Bourke was forced to introduce Danielle O'Leary and Aoife Dillane for the second half and O'Leary proved to be the Kingdom's saviour. She kicked four points from play and was unstoppable in general play. Mayo never got going in the second period and only managed a single point from a free kicked by one of their best performers in Walsh and never troubled the scoreboard from play. Kerry with Aishling O'Connell, Emma Costello, Mary O'Connell, Caoimhe Evans and Siofra O'Shea ensured that Kingdom continue their unbeaten run.
