Canadian men reach record high, climbing to No. 28 in FIFA world rankings
The Canadian men continue to reach new heights under coach Jesse Marsch, climbing two places to a career-high No. 28 in the latest FIFA world rankings.
Canada was ranked 49th when the American coach took over in May 2024. The Canadians have climbed steadily since to No. 48, 40, 38 and 35, surpassing its previous high of No. 33 (set in February 2022 under former coach John Herdman after an impressive World Cup qualifying run) when it reached No. 31 in November.
Canada closed out the year unchanged at No. 31 before setting a new mark in April at No. 30.

Since then, the Canadians beat Ukraine 4-2 and lost to Ivory Coast in a penalty shootout in the Canadian Shield Tournament and defeated Honduras 6-0 and El Salvador 2-0, drawn Curacao 1-1, and lost a penalty shootout to Guatemala at the Concacaf Gold Cup.
Canada's lowest ranking was No. 122 in October 2014.
The top five teams in the new rankings are unchanged with Argentina No. 1 followed by Spain, France, England and Brazil. Portugal jumps one place to No. 6, dropping the Netherlands to No. 7. Belgium is unchanged at No. 8 with Germany and Croatia each climbing one spot to No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.
Italy drops two places to No. 11.

Gold Cup winner Mexico jumps four spots to No. 13, behind unchanged Morocco, to leapfrog the U.S. and take over top spot in Concacaf. The Americans, beaten 2-1 by Mexico in Sunday's Gold Cup final, moved up one place to No. 15.
Canada ranks third in Concacaf, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean.
Canada's next matches are against No. 48 Romania in Bucharest and No. 31 Wales in Swansea during the September FIFA window, followed by home and away friendlies in October against No. 24 Australia in Montreal and No. 14 Colombia in Harrison, N.J.
Co-host Canada opens World Cup play on June 12, 2026, in Toronto.
Costa Rica is the biggest climber in the new rankings, up 14 places to No. 40 after making the Gold Cup quarterfinals, where it lost to the U.S. in a penalty shootout. No. 66 Honduras, up nine places, and No. 100 Guatemala, up six places, also jump thanks to making the Gold Cup semifinals.
No. 70 Jamaica, No. 90 Haiti, No. 132 Congo and No. 171 Maldives each fell seven places.
FIFA says 202 matches were played since the last rankings.

( Organizers of Vancouver's Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival say the event won't be going ahead next year due to the FIFA World Cup. Dominic Lai, the senior development, marketing and operations director with Dragon Boat BC, said the organization only recently recovered financially from the impact of the pandemic pandemic, and doesn't know if it will be able to withstand this hit. 'For us, FIFA represents a second Covid,' he said. 'Financially, it is a very significant impact to our operating structure. I mean, we are a non-profit. We do all these great events, but at the end of the day, we still need to pay our bills.' Lai said the festival – which is the largest of its kind in North America – can't run as usual in 2026 because part of the festival would be located within a security zone designated for the soccer tournament. An exclusion on events in that zone will be in place for two weeks before the tournament begins and two weeks after it ends. 'That was something that we hadn't expected,' he said. Lai said the group has been working with the province and the city sine 2022, when it was announced that Vancouver would be a host city for the summer soccer tournament. 'We've tried working with everyone throughout this process, but we've also been getting inquiries from our racers, from media outlets,' he said. 'And so we just needed to be able to say, this is what's happening and present it in a way that updates everyone.' City Coun. Lucy Maloney said she learned about the cancellation Thursday. 'I think there's been concerns about it for several months, but I only found out today where it's hit a crucial point where its unlikely to go ahead,' she said. In a statement to CTV News, the province said, it was aware that the event was impacted by the World Cup and understands the challenges major events like this can create. 'FIFA World Cup 26™ was announced in 2022, and event organizers throughout the province have been using this lead time to prepare for changes to events impacted by the FIFA World Cup 26,' the statement said. 'Many events are successfully finding alternative dates, and locations for their events in the lead up to FIFA World Cup 26™.'

Blue Jays take calculated risk in deadline acquisition of Shane Bieber
Step aside, Justin. There is another Bieber coming to Toronto. The Blue Jays on Friday acquired former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber from the Guardians before the 6 p.m. ET trade deadline. In exchange they sent pitcher Khal Stephen, their No. 5-ranked prospect, to Cleveland. The move to obtain Bieber is a calculated risk. He has not pitched in the major leagues since April, 2024, when he underwent Tommy John surgery. Cathal Kelly: A decade later, the Blue Jays are finally interesting Bieber has made four rehab starts in the minor leagues and if he returns to anywhere near previous form, he could be a steal. The right-hander spent his entire career in Cleveland and had a 62-32 record before injury. In his last two starts in the Arizona Complex League he threw 94 miles per hour and pitched 4.1 shutout innings and struck out 10 batters. 'He looked like Shane Bieber,' Toronto general manager Ross Atkins said. 'That's what our scout that was there told us.' Besides winning the Cy Young Award unanimously in 2020, that year he also became the ninth pitching triple crown winner since 1913 when he led the majors in wins, earned run average and strikeouts. It is unknown how close he is to being ready to pitch for Toronto. 'We will be focused on getting him here when it's best for him,' Atkins said. 'The risk is in some ways the exciting aspect in terms of our upside.' In addition, the Blue Jays acquired reliever Louis Varland and infielder Ty France from the Minnesota Twins for outfielder Alan Roden and pitching prospect Kendry Rojas. 'The guy has been elite and has performed very well on big stages. He was the pitcher in baseball at one point. 'It will be hard for him to surpass his previous ceiling when you look at all the things he has accomplished. For him to get back to where he was would be exciting.'
