Periyar varsity's former V-C hands over charge, sparks new row
Jagannathan, whose term ended on Monday, is facing multiple allegations and ongoing investigations. In light of this, his decision to appoint Dr Periasamy as interim V-C, flouting protocol, has drawn sharp criticism from the academic community.
'A retiring V-C is expected to convene a syndicate meeting and form a panel to shortlist candidates for the position. But Jagannathan did not consult anyone,' said a senior professor from the university, on the condition of anonymity.
Dr T Periasamy's appointment has raised eyebrows also due to the controversies surrounding him. Periasamy is reportedly associated with RSS groups, and is currently under investigation by the DVAC. A case against him is also pending in the Madras High Court.
'This is a clear violation of university norms and democratic processes. Appointing someone who is under a cloud undermines the credibility of the institution,' said another professor.

PMK founder Ramadoss seeks ban on Anbumani's upcoming padayatra
The ongoing tussle between Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss and his son and party leader Anbumani Ramadoss has intensified, with the former lodging a complaint with the Director-General of Police seeking effective measures to prevent the latter's upcoming 100-day padayatra 'to reclaim the rights of the Tamil people.' Speaking to reporters at his Thailapuram residence near Tindivanam on Thursday (July 24, 2025), Mr. Ramadoss said the police should prevent Mr. Anbumani from taking out the padayatra (scheduled to be held from July 25) across the State as it would give rise to law and order issues in north Tamil Nadu. He also sought police intervention to prevent anyone from using the PMK flag during the yatra. Mr. Ramadoss reiterated that his name should not be used by his son in any context, though he may use his initial. Mr. Ramadoss said he had assumed charge as 'party president' on May 30, 2025. The executive and administrative committees were revamped and the list of office-bearers, including the honorary president, treasurer, and general secretary have been furnished with the Election Commission of India (ECI). 'I have duly appointed office-bearers to run the party and if anyone prevents them from doing their duties or falsely claims to be office-bearers, they will referred to the Disciplinary Action Committee and expelled from the party,' he said. Referring to the alleged planting of a bugging device beneath his chair at his residence, Mr. Ramadoss said it was the most obnoxious development in Tamil Nadu, the kind of which was never experienced by any leader in the State. The PMK founder said he had information that the bugging device was imported from the United Kingdom, and is also said to be available in Bengaluru. He wanted the police to expedite the probe into the case.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other ministers of the Maharashtra cabinet will be in JNU on Thursday evening to inaugurate the Kusumagraj Special Centre for Marathi Language, Literature and Culture. The language centre has been named after renowned poet and Jnanpith awardee Kusumagraj, and will focus on Marathi language, literature and cultural traditions. The Chief Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Special Centre for Security and Strategic Studies, which will be under the School of International Studies. It will explore indigenous strategic traditions based on the Maratha empire. The centre is envisioned to become a hub for military history, strategy and future policy development rooted in India's past. The Kusumagraj centre will offer postgraduate and certificate-level programmes to promote multilingualism and cultural understanding. 'It will offer MA in Marathi and certificate courses to go with the NEP for non-Marathi speakers like those who speak Tamil. A lot of students from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have opted for Tamil and there are many who speak Tamil whenever we have functions. This is encouraging because this will unite India and make people more sensitive to other languages of the country. The present state government is giving importance to Marathi, which has been declared by the Centre as one of the classical languages, also because Marathi is a language of great repute and know for its literature,' JNU's VC Santishree Pandit told reporters recently. The State government has announced the funds of ₹10 Crore for each centre. The Marathi centre was first announced in the year 2007 by then Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. Maharashtra government wants to construct an equestrian statue of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj inside the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University. 'We have held preliminary talks with the Vice Chancellor of the University. She is positive about it. A statue of our most revered king in the renowned university will mean spreading the importance of his valour and about Maratha history on a national platform which is holds such a key position in the academic world,' Maharashtra minister Uday Samant told The Hindu. 'We have sought land from JNU for the project. Once the land is allotted, the State government will construct the statue in the campus. There is an in-principle approval for the State government's proposal,' Mr Samant said.

'Father Congress, mother Sanghi': Smriti Irani on family and why she joined BJP
Former union minister Smriti Irani recalled her early days in the BJP and spoke about how her father would drop her off at the gates of the Prime Minister's residence, and not want to come in, during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's time because of being a Congress supporter. BJP leader Smriti Irani said her grandfather would walk daily to the RSS shakha in RK Puram, Delhi. (Video grab/ANI) Her mother, she said, was a supporter of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent body of the BJP. 'Father Congress, mother Sanghi!' she quipped. She counted her RSS-supporting maternal grandfather as the major household influence on her political choices. 'I remember how my nana would walk daily for the RSS shakha in Sector 6, RK Puram,' she said in an interview with India Today TV in which she went to see her old home in Delhi. Also read | 'At just 49…': Smriti Irani on possible political retirement 'The environment at home was always that if you want to do social service, stay with the Sangh, 'what's the need to go into politics?'' she said, 'My view was that I wanted to be a part of policy-making, and that's why I joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).' About how her father met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023, she said, 'My father was — still is — a Congress supporter… During Vajpayee-ji's time, when I was a BJP worker, he never sought to enter the PM residence; never wished to meet the PM. But this was the first time he showed such a desire; he wanted to meet PM Modi and thank him for giving his daughter an opportunity to serve the country.' Irani, who lost the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Amethi, is busy at present with her big TV acting comeback, with the series 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'. It was this series at the turn of the millennium that made her a household name as 'Tulsi', easing her entry into politics. In the interview, she denied that she was retiring from politics. She also spoke about why she has blunted her attacks on Rahul Gandhi, whom she had famously defeated in 2019: 'That's not my responsibility.'
