Allagash Brewing Co. will open Scarborough location in July

Yahoo18-04-2025

Apr. 18—Allagash Brewing Co. is on track to open a new location at The Downs in Scarborough in July, the company announced Thursday.
Allagash Scarborough, at 10 Market St., will be a reimagined hospitality concept for the Allagash team, with house-made wine and cocktails in addition to beer. A menu featuring food from the team at Bite Into Maine will also be available.
Allagash will continue to offer a tasting room and brewery tours at its headquarters in Portland.
"For 30 years, Portland has been and will always be our home, but we're excited to reach even more of the Maine community in this new space, as well as folks visiting Maine, by bringing the Allagash experience to Scarborough," founder Rob Tod said in a statement.
Tod first announced in 2022 that Allagash would move to Scarborough to be part of The Downs, the state's largest mixed-use development. At the time, he said the Scarborough location would replace the Portland tasting room. Since then, he decided that a new tasting room inside an existing space directly across from the land purchased in 2022 would be a better fit.
"Given the building costs and current market realities, using this already existing space at The Downs seems like a better way to move forward with our plans to expand to Scarborough in the immediate term," Tod said. "While this new tasting room will be a pivot from our original plans at The Downs, we're thrilled to be a part of the Scarborough community and invite people to come see what our new tasting space has to offer."
Since breaking ground in 2018, The Downs has grown to include Maine's first Costco, other commercial and light industrial spaces and more than 600 housing units.
The Downs has recently pivoted to the town center portion of the project. Developers plan to create a gathering space and destination for the community, with a central green surrounded by shops, restaurants, breweries and other amenities.
"We're creating a space that can be a community hub for families, our friends in The Downs and Scarborough as a whole," said Emily Wallace, director of hospitality at Allagash. "Much of our staff lives in Scarborough or spends time there with the abundance of beautiful beaches and hikes nearby."
Founded in 1995, Allagash is one of Maine's oldest craft brewers, known for its Belgian-style beers, namely its flagship, Allagash White. Tod won a 2019 James Beard Award for Outstanding Wine, Beer or Spirits professional.

I'm a dietitian who helps busy parents lose weight without restrictive diets. Here are 15 Costco buys I swear by.

I'm a mom and registered dietitian who helps busy parents lose weight and maintain weight loss. I try to stock up on nutrient-dense foods from Costco, including easy dinners and satisfying snacks. Kirkland Signature quinoa and mixed nuts are pantry staples for me, and I like the Rao's marinara. I'm a registered dietitian who specializes in helping busy parents lose weight without restrictive diets. As a mom of three myself, I know weight management can be especially difficult when you've got a family to feed. Preparing healthy family meals feels like a Herculean task on busy weeknights between work responsibilities and after-school activities. Having nutritious, balanced foods on hand is half the battle — fortunately, I've found great bulk buys at Costco that come in handy when life gets overwhelming. Here are a few things I get at the wholesale retailer to help me (and my clients) consistently eat well while supporting sustainable weight management. I always try to keep riced cauliflower on hand. I love using cauliflower rice instead of brown rice to add more nutrition, fiber, and bulk to my meals without carbohydrate overload. This frozen bag from Tattooed Chef is great because I can easily heat and eat a single serving or a larger portion. Premade meals from Kevin's Natural Foods come in handy on busy evenings. Meals from Kevin's Natural Foods are perfect for those "nothing's defrosted but I don't want to derail my weight-loss efforts" kind of nights. From Korean BBQ-style beef to roasted-garlic chicken, these heat-and-eat entrées are ready in minutes and packed with protein to make them extra satisfying. Pair them with precooked rice or riced cauliflower for a more filling dinner. The Kirkland Signature chunky guacamole cups are convenient. Portion-controlled, portable, and super satisfying, Kirkland Signature chunky guacamole cups are a staple for me. Each cup contains 4 grams of fiber plus heart-healthy fats that can be great for stabilizing blood sugar and keeping you feeling full for longer. I like to dip veggies or tortilla chips in these for a midday snack. I keep mixed berries in the freezer. I toss frozen berries into oatmeal or yogurt for an easy dose of fiber, antioxidants, and natural sweetness. This four-berry blend is also great for nutrient-dense smoothies — I blend them with baby spinach, frozen banana, and a splash of water. It's easy to make dishes more nutritious with baby spinach. Baby spinach is a no-brainer for sneaking more greens into your meals. It's easy to add to smoothies, eggs, and sandwiches — or to use as the base for a quick side salad. Pre-cooked chicken bites come in handy for lunches. With 24 grams of protein per pouch, these fully cooked Fresh Station chicken-breast bites are a lunch lifesaver. They can be the star of a balanced salad or wrap that can help keep your blood sugar stable midday. Kirkland Signature egg bites can be an easy breakfast. Some people skip breakfast because they're busy or want to "save calories," but that typically backfires when it comes to weight management. Skipping breakfast can throw off your blood sugar for the whole day, so I suggest having even just a quick meal in the morning. These Kirkland Signature sous-vide egg-white bites are one of my favorite easy breakfasts because they cook in minutes and have 11 grams of protein per serving. I also try to keep protein bars on hand. Stash protein bars in your purse, glove box, diaper bag, or desk to ensure you aren't skipping snacks on even the busiest of days — doing so can lead to sugar cravings or overeating at mealtime. Sometimes, I grab G2G bars at Costco. They're filling and each has 18 grams of protein. RXBars are also a solid pick. One of my other favorite protein-packed Costco buys is RXBars. They have 12 grams of protein per serving, and I like their simple ingredients. Kirkland Signature mixed nuts are great to keep on hand. Mixed nuts are a great grab-and-go snack with healthy fats, protein, and fiber. Pair a handful of nuts with some high-fiber, antioxidant-rich fruit, such as berries or an apple, to create the perfect blood-sugar balancing snack that'll help keep you full between meals. Quinoa is a great whole grain to serve with dinner. Quinoa is one of my favorite fiber-rich whole grains that's ideal for busy weeknights. It takes only about 20 minutes to prepare in a rice cooker, and it pairs well with most proteins, including salmon and chicken. I always grab a salad kit or two from Costco. Costco typically has a great variety of salad kits, which keep my meals interesting. The kits are great for busy weeknights since they typically include pre-washed lettuce, toppings, and a premade dressing. Plus, using them to fill half of your dinner plate with veggies is a surefire way to maximize your nutrition intake. Chicken sausages are good to keep on hand. Aidells chicken sausages can be a great protein for quick meals since they're fully cooked. I like to slice the sausages and pop them in the oven or on the stovetop with veggies. These are also a great, simpler alternative to hot dogs at a barbecue. The Rao's Homemade marinara is a staple for me. I've found it's difficult to find delicious premade pasta sauce that doesn't have added sugar or sweeteners. Fortunately, the Rao's Homemade marinara fits the bill. The sauce pairs well with chickpea or lentil pasta, which can be good sources of fiber and protein. Skinny Pop is an easy, light snack. Skinny Pop popcorn is good for satisfying salty, crunchy snack cravings. Each 100-calorie bag is made with just popcorn, oil, and salt. I love the simple ingredients and how easy these are to throw in a lunch bag. Click to keep reading Costco diaries like this one. Read the original article on Business Insider

Bus powers could help TikTok-famous villages deal with problem parking

Town hall powers to set up bus routes could deal with problem parking in TikTok-famous 'honeypot villages', an MP has said. Jon Pearce praised the Government for proposing a suite of new powers which councils can use to run their own bus routes and prevent companies from pulling 'socially necessary' services. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the Bus Services (No. 2) Bill, which secured a second reading on Monday, would 'streamline' the franchising process when authorities bid to set up London-style networks, and would better secure 'lifeline routes' elsewhere. 'In part thanks to a TikTok craze to photograph sunset and sunrise over Mam Tor, communities where I live in High Peak have been plagued by illegal parking,' Labour's Mr Pearce told the Commons. The 517 metre-high hill in Derbyshire has become popular on social media, with several videos filmed at the landmark racking up more than 100,000 likes on TikTok. Mr Pearce continued: 'I'm co-ordinating a response to these issues with local stakeholders like the Peak park, police and councils, and a key tranche of what we need to do is deliver better bus services that are integrated with local train services. 'This Bill will transfer powers away from Westminster and empower local communities to take decisions necessary for our commuters to get to work, our students to get to college, our vulnerable to access the healthcare they need, and our honeypot villages to manage tourism sustainably.' Gritting crews were unable to reach a Peak District road near the hill earlier this year after more than 200 cars were double parked on it, according to Derbyshire County Council, and Mr Pearce previously wrote to authorities, when he warned that emergency services had been obstructed. The Bill would give councils the power to set up franchised bus networks to regulate routes, timetables, fares and vehicle standards, without the need for ministers' permission. Ms Alexander said the Government is 'fixing the broken' franchising process and told MPs: 'Proposed schemes need to jump through a myriad of hoops and they still require my consent to proceed, which is odd to say the least. 'The idea that I understand more what passengers in Leicestershire or Cornwall need than their local leaders is for the birds. In December, we opened up franchising to every local authority and now through this Bill we will further streamline the process making it simpler for franchise schemes to be granted and assessed.' Ms Alexander said the franchising model 'won't work everywhere', and added: 'That's why this Bill also strengthens enhanced partnerships and removes the ideological ban on establishing new local authority bus companies. 'Furthermore, by giving local authorities the power to design and pay bus operator grants in their areas, this Bill gives greater protections for socially necessary local services – securing those lifeline routes that keep communities connected.' Pressed about funding to local authorities for the £3 bus fare cap, Ms Alexander said: 'There is a spending review under way but I can confirm that I fully appreciate the importance of an affordable and accessible bus route.' Ms Alexander also said the Government will 'press pause' on so-called floating bus stops 'perceived to be poorly designed', amid concerns over accessibility issues and potential hazards for visually impaired people and others. Liberal Democrat transport spokesman Paul Kohler said the Bill 'rightly lifts the outdated, ideologically driven ban on municipally owned bus companies, empowering local authorities who wish to use it, rather than infantilising them' and added that 'it is not and must not become a one-size-fits-all approach'. He added: 'Empowering local authorities in law is one thing. Enabling them in practice is quite another. 'Whilst this Bill hands councils a set of keys to a new bus network, it doesn't ensure there's fuel in the tank.' Conservative shadow transport secretary Gareth Bacon earlier said improvements for passengers 'simply won't happen' without more Treasury money. He said: 'The Bill does not prioritise passengers and there is nothing in it that guarantees an improvement in service standards. 'The truth is that this Bill appears to be driven by political nostalgia. It is in many ways a thinly veiled attempt to recreate the municipal model of the pre-1986 era without fully considering the financial and operational realities of today.' The Bill will undergo further scrutiny in the Commons at a later date.

In China, 'The Great American' burger is now made with Australian beef

At his restaurant in Beijing, Geng Xiaoyun used to offer a special dish of salt-baked chicken feet — or "phoenix talons" as they are called in China — imported from America. With prices climbing 30% from March due to tariffs, the owner of Kunyuan restaurant had to pull the Chinese delicacy from the menu. "American chicken feet are so beautiful," Xiaoyun said. "They're spongy so they taste great. Chinese [chicken] feet just aren't as good." Geng can now source chicken feet from Brazil or Russia but said they just don't stand up to the American ones. He keeps a small stash for himself but hopes to serve his American phoenix talons once again. "The price of American chicken feet will come back down," Xiaoyun said, "as long as there are no big changes in the world's political situation." But the 90-day tariff pause agreed by China and the U.S. in Geneva in May is now under threat as both sides have accused each other of breaching the terms. On Monday, the Chinese Commerce Ministry responded to President Donald Trump's claim that the country "totally violated its agreement." The ministry pointed at recent U.S. artificial intelligence chip export controls as actions that "severely undermine" the Geneva pact. As the world waits and watches, American agricultural products have been vanishing from Chinese stores and restaurants and losing ground to other imports. U.S. Department of Agriculture grade beef has been a draw for years at Home Plate, a Beijing restaurant known locally for its American-style barbecue. However, staff said the restaurant stopped serving American beef last month. Dishes like "The Great American" burger are made with beef imported from Australia. Australian beef has zero duty under the terms of the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement, though China does maintain the right to a safeguard limit on those imports. Liu Li, a beef supplier at the Sanyuanli market for three decades, said the tariffs have disrupted supply, hiking the price of U.S. beef by 50% compared to before the tariff fight. "U.S. beef is fattier and tastier," Li said. "It's a shame we're in a trade war. The high price is just too much to bear."
