Marcos says PH has had no agricultural policy for a long time

GMA Network30-06-2025
President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. said Monday that the Philippines lacks an agricultural policy as the sector has not been aided for quite some time.
Marcos said this during his engagement with the national grand winners of the 50th Gawad Saka: Parangal sa mga Natatanging Magsasaka at Mangingisda in a forum at the Science City of Muñoz in Nueva Ecija.

He said this was the reason why the youth was not engaged in farming activities, adding that they do not see a good career path in the agricultural sector.
''Medyo hindi natulungan ang agrikultura nang matagal eh. Wala tayong agricultural policy, masyado nang napakatagal. Kaya't sasabihin ng mga bata, 'Ba't tayo papasok diyan, walang pupuntahan 'yan, hanggang diyan na lang 'yan.' Kaya't ngayon, babaguhin natin lahat 'yan,'' Marcos said.
(It seems that no help was extend in our agricultural sector. We haven't had an agricultural policy for a long time. So, the youth will ask, 'Why will we go into agriculture, there's no future there.' So we will change that.)
Marcos cited the need for modern technology to improve the agricultural sector, particularly the country's yields. This will also attract the youth to engage in farming, he said.
''Kailangan natin pumasok sa mga bagong teknolohiya dahil 'yun kailangan talaga natin para 'yung bawat ektarya natin, mas malaki ang yield. Mas malaki ang ani,'' Marcos said.
(We need to use modern technology because we really need that to improve our yield from every hectare. The harvest will be greater.)
Marcos said the youth would be the ones who will teach the other farmers in utilizing technology.
''Sila ang magtuturo sa atin ng mga bagong teknolohiya at 'yan palagay ko ay magiging interesting na 'yan para sa ating mga kabataan. Makikita nila na may magandang hanapbuhay naman ang magsasaka,'' he said.

Sara Duterte hits eyed ammunition manufacturing site in PH

Vice President Sara Duterte has criticized the statement of an envoy that the Philippines is open to the production of ammunition in the country in a bid to enhance the defense ties between Manila and Washington. The Vice President, who is currently in The Hague, Netherlands to visit her detained father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, stressed that the move would undermine the country's independent foreign policy. 'Ang nakalagay sa ating Saligang Batas, na meron tayong dapat independent foreign policy. Kung 'yung ginagawa ng gobyerno ay kumikiling sa isang bansa lang, ibig sabihin no'n, wala na tayong true independent policy,' Vice President Sara said in an interview on Monday, July 21. (Our Constitution states that we must have an independent foreign policy. If what the government is doing is only for the benefit of another country, that means we no longer have a true independent policy.) 'So, dapat hindi lang ako 'yung kumukontra, lahat tayong mga Pilipino kumukontra sa plano na ito dahil ang ating mga galaw ay dapat for the interest of our country. Hindi para sa interest ng ibang mga bansa,' she added. (So, I should not be the only one who should oppose this plan, but all of us Filipinos because our actions should be for the interest of our country and not of other countries.) It was Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel ''Babe'' Romualdez who earlier said that an ammunition production facility would be a 'good way of being able to help a combination of both defense and economic cooperation' between the Philippines and the US. The ambassador said that this would also generate employment in the country. It was also previously reported that US lawmakers were exploring the possibility of establishing a joint ammunition manufacturing facility in Subic Bay. The facility will reportedly enable the forward staging of ammunition stockpiles and related materials such as nitrocellulose, nitroglycerin, and acid. Duterte, however, pointed out that Filipinos should only act for the benefit of the Philippines, and not of other countries. 'Hindi lang Amerika, kahit anong bansa 'yan—hindi para sa kanila ang galaw nating mga Pilipino. Ang mga ginagawa natin ay dapat para sa interes ng ating bansa,' the Vice President said. Mapua unveils electric vehicle prototype for Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2026

Engineering students at Mapua University are taking on a new challenge as they prepare for next year's Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. For the first time since the eco-marathon was introduced in Asia in 2010, Mapua's Cardinal One will compete with a battery-electric vehicle after fielding prototypes that run on internal combustion engines. Still under development, the electric vehicle prototype, called Aguila Neo Electric, was presented to the alumni, partners, sponsors, and media at Mapua's Intramuros campus on Saturday night, July 19. In the upcoming months, the EV prototype will go through several track tests and enhancements before being shipped to Qatar in time for the competition in 2026. ''After 15 years of competing in internal combustion, Cardinal One has transitioned to full electric propulsion—reflecting our commitment to innovation and sustainability. Aguila Neo Electric represents not only a technological leap but also the dedication and resilience of Filipino student engineers redefining the future of clean mobility,'' Cardinal One said. The event also recognized the legacy of previous Cardinal One teams that competed on the global stage. Shell Eco-marathon serves as a platform for students to showcase their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills to construct energy-efficient vehicles and then compete on the track. Mapua won the technical innovation award twice, in 2013 and 2024, in the internal combustion category. According to Shell, the award ''recognizes the team's ability to integrate advanced technologies into their vehicle design, illustrating their high level of technical proficiency and creative ingenuity.'' Mapua's previous teams were also recognized for their safety practices. —GMA Integrated News

Marcos meets with execs from US semiconductor industry

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. held a meeting with top executives of the Semiconductor Industry Association during his official visit to the United States. Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez said the semiconductor sector is one of Manila's biggest industries with strong economic ties to Washington. Further, the Philippines is host to more than 500 electronics and semiconductor firms, including major American companies. In November 2023, Marcos said in a meeting with the SIA that the Philippines was ready to work with the group. Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed the US was the country's top export destination in 2024, accounting for 16.6%, or $12.14 billion, of the total export receipts of $73.27 billion. The Philippines' largest export was electronic goods, which made up 53.4% of total exports ($39.09 billion), of which $29.17 billion were semiconductors. Marcos also met with top executives of leading US investment firms, including Cerberus, which serves as an established alternative investment advisor with approximately $65 billion in assets across complementary credit, private equity, and real estate platforms. I Squared, meanwhile, is an independent global infrastructure investor founded in 2012 that is known for the development of investment platforms in infrastructure. KKR & Co., Inc. is another global investment firm investing across private markets in every asset class. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
