Alaska Airlines is launching Burbank routes to fill Avelo void

Alaska is the latest airline gunning to take up the void that Avelo Airlines will leave at Hollywood Burbank Airport. Alaska said Thursday that it will launch year-round, daily routes connecting Burbank with Eugene, Ore.; Redmond/Bend, Ore.; and Pasco, Wash. The flights commence Oct. 26 and will be operated with regional Embraer E175 planes. All three routes are currently served by discounter Avelo, which announced this month that it will pull out of Burbank on Dec. 2. Discount carrier Breeze plans to be fighting against Alaska for Avelo's market share, having announced its own service plans from Burbank to Eugene, Pasco and Bend, as well to Eureka, Calif., and Provo, Utah. Breeze is entering Burbank, but Alaska's there But Alaska will have the jump on Breeze. The Seattle-based airline already flies to five destinations from Burbank, while Breeze will be a new entrant to the airport. And Breeze's Burbank flights won't begin until March, several months after the new Alaska operations. The Burbank announcements are among seven newly planned routes Alaska unveiled Thursday connecting California to the northwest. The airline will also begin daily Ontario, Calif.-Boise, Idaho, service and daily Orange County-Spokane, Wash., service on Jan. 7. In addition, Alaska will fly winter seasonally between Santa Rosa, Calif., and Palm Springs five-times weekly beginning Oct. 26 and winter seasonally thrice-weekly between San Diego and the skiing destination of Sun Valley, Idaho, beginning Dec. 18. Alaska is scheduled to be the lone carrier flying between Ontario and Boise, Cirium flight schedule data shows. Alaska will also be the only carrier connecting San Diego with Sun Valley, and it will be alone on Santa Rosa-Palm Springs, replacing Avelo service that was discontinued in June. On Orange County-Spokane, Allegiant currently offers summer seasonal service.

Home Depot denies claims of cooperation with ICE deportations

With the Trump administration pulling off all brakes for a wide-scale deportation campaign, businesses both big and small have felt pressure to take a stance against the targeting of migrants. Avelo Airlines, a Houston-based low-cost airline that serves many secondary markets, spurred a wave of protests across different cities for continuing to use three of its Boeing 737-800s (BA) planes to run deportation flights for U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE). Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Back in May, chief executive Andrew Levy added further fuel to the fire by saying that the contract to "support the Department's deportation efforts" was "controversial [but...] too valuable not to pursue." The latest company to fall under the radar of how it can help or hinder Trump's deportation campaign is home goods chain giant Home Depot (HD) . Parking lots of store locations in several parts of California became the main target for ICE raids this summer. In one standoff at the start of June, federal agents rounded up and took away over 40 day laborers people at a location in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles. Parking lots in front of the store often end up becoming gathering spots for those looking for temporary work. Many laborers come from Latin American countries such as Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras and get offered day jobs from small employers who come to the parking lots to seek them out. "They are trying to earn a living and have a tough decision to make: pop my head out and get deported or don't and can't support my family," George Carrillo, who heads the national Hispanic Construction Council, said to CNBC. Related: Home Depot makes a startling closure amid concerning trend As a result, many rumors around what role Home Depot itself is playing in these round-ups have circulated on social media. To contradict them, representatives have been replying under posts claiming that the retailer has accepted a $250 million Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contract for access to their parking lots to conduct deportations. "Hi, this story is false," Home Depot wrote under one such post. "We don't have contracts with DHS or ICE. We aren't notified that ICE activities are going to happen, and we aren't involved in them." Under another post making a similar claim on July 27, Home Deport similarly stated that these claims "are false" and that it "isn't involved" in any raids. Even so, Home Depot has faced mounting pressure to speak out against the campaigns in the communities they operate in. Some social media users have called for a boycott, while others have been replying under every post on the Home Depot account with questions about what it is doing to close off store grounds to deportations. "Why have you continued to allow ICE raids on your properties?" one commenter with the profile name Laurie wrote under Home Depot's denial of signing an ICE contract. Dozens protest at BWI Airport over Avelo Airlines role in ICE deportations

About 100 people protested at Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport on Sunday over a budget airline's role in immigration deportations, according to our media partner, The Baltimore Banner. Avelo Airlines, a Texas-based air carrier founded in 2021, has only two direct flights from BWI, according to the Banner. According to CBS News, Avelo has partnered with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to operate deportation flights for U.S. Immigration and Customs and Enforcement (ICE). According to the Banner, Sunday's protest at BWI was organized by Doctors for Camp Closure, Ground ICE, and the Greater Baltimore Democratic Socialists of America. Protesters met outside the Maryland Area Rail Commuter station at BWI and walked to a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 195, according to the Banner. The Banner reports that signs were held that read, "Avelo Airlines fuels fascism," "Avelo is disappearing people for Trump," and "Evilo." The protesters told the Banner they were pressuring the airline and discouraging travelers from flying with Avelo. "It's toxic to your brand," Kate Sugarman, an organizer with Doctors for Camp Closure, told the Banner about the deportation flights. "We want to make sure that Avelo and every other airline knows that it is unacceptable to have any kind of cooperation with ICE." Avelo shared this statement with the Banner: "We recognize the right of individuals to peacefully assemble and assert their freedom of speech. Avelo's main priority continues to be maintaining the safety and timeliness of our operation that over 7.3 million Customers across the country continue to enjoy." According to CBS News, Avelo's domestic and international flights flying migrants started in mid-May. Avelo says the aircraft used for the trips will not bear Avelo's logo. Avelo said the agreement with ICE is a "long-term charter program." The airline has been recruiting flight attendants to staff the flights, according to a job posting for what it calls a "charter program for the Department of Homeland Security," CBS News reported. The job pays $28 an hour for the first year of service. "We are seeking energetic, highly motivated Flight Attendants who wish to join a committed group of safety and service professionals at Avelo Airlines," the listing reads. "Flights will be both domestic and international trips to support DHS's deportation efforts," the post adds, although it makes no references to migrants.
