Julian Assange Joins Massive Pro-Palestine Protest On Sydney Harbour Bridge
Assange, who returned to Australia last year after his release from a high-security British prison, was pictured surrounded by family and marching alongside former Australian foreign minister and New South Wales premier Bob Carr.
France, Britain and Canada have in recent weeks voiced, in some cases qualified, intentions to diplomatically recognise a Palestinian state, as international concern and criticism have grown over malnutrition in Gaza.
Australia has called for an end to the war in Gaza but has so far stopped short of a decision to recognise a Palestinian state.
But in a joint statement with more than a dozen other nations on Tuesday it expressed the "willingness or the positive consideration... to recognise the state of Palestine as an essential step towards the two-State solution".
The pro-Palestinian crowd braved heavy winds and rain to march across the bridge, chanting "ceasefire now" and "free Palestine".
New South Wales police said it had deployed hundreds of extra staff across Sydney for the march.
Mehreen Faruqi, the New South Wales senator for the left-wing Greens party, told the crowd gathered at central Sydney's Lang Park that the march would "make history".
She called for the "harshest sanctions on Israel", accusing its forces of "massacring" Gazans, and criticised New South Wales Premier Chris Minns for saying the protest should not go ahead.
Dozens of marchers held up banners listing the names of thousands of Palestinian children killed since the Gaza war broke out after an October 2023 attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Labour backbench MP Ed Husic attended the march and called for his ruling party, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, to recognise a Palestinian state.
Assange did not address the crowd or talk to the media.
Israel is under mounting international pressure to end the bloodshed that has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry.
Hamas's 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to a tally based on official figures.
Of the 251 hostages taken during the attack, 49 are still being held in Gaza, including 27, the Israeli military says, are dead.
The Harbour Bridge is over a kilometre long and was opened in 1932.
Since then, its twin parabolic arcs have become world famous, a symbol of both Sydney and of Australia.

Far-right allies in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition have been pushing for a total takeover of Gaza as part of his vow to eradicate Hamas militants, though the military has warned this could jeopardise the lives of remaining hostages. The release of the hostages and negotiations for a ceasefire are Germany's top priorities, Merz said, expressing deep concern over the suffering of civilians in the Gaza strip. Germany's parliament said in June that export licences for military equipment to Israel worth 485 million euros ($564 million) were granted between October 7, 2023 and May 13, 2025.

Malviya tempers stand on Sylheti speakers after criticism
GUWAHATI Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Malviya has recalibrated his view on people speaking the Sylheti variant of Bengali. This follows the criticism he faced from Sylheti speakers, including some party leaders from Assam's Bengali-dominated Barak Valley, for justifying the Delhi Police's description of Bengali as a 'Bangladeshi language'. Sylheti is a Bengali dialect associated with the Sylhet district of Bangladesh. More than 70 lakh people in Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura also speak the dialect. In a long tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on Baishe Shrabon, marking his death anniversary, Mr. Malviya said the Nobel laureate believed in the unity of India and played a pivotal role in forcing the reversal of the 1905 British colonial decision to partition Bengal. 'He was acutely aware of the plight of hapless Hindu Bengali Sylhetis, separated from Bengal and tossed about by political machinations, and empathised with their suffering,' the BJP leader wrote. 'Sylhet should have been part of India, of Bengal, but the Muslim League's collusion with the British ensured otherwise. Yet Hindu Bengali Sylhetis remained tied to India's national identity, and many have risen to national prominence,' Mr. Malviya's post read. Calling Tagore Bengal's greatest gift not only to India but to the world, the BJP leader said the literary genius's greatest contribution was to elevate the Bangla (Bengali) language to the exalted status it enjoys today, at home and abroad. 'It is the second most spoken language in India and an official language of the country; globally, it ranks among the ten most spoken languages. Through both prose and poetry, Tagore gave Bangla a literary richness that resonates universally. The music he composed transcends linguistic and geographical barriers—its appeal is timeless and universal,' Mr. Malviya wrote. He said Tagore's political consciousness was as keen as his literary acumen, and that his belief in the unity of the Indian people was embodied in Visva-Bharati, the institution he founded. 'Today, the nation bows to this great son of Bharat who celebrated Bengal, Bangaliness, and Bangla bhasha (language), not from a narrow lens of parochialism or regionalism, but as part of a universal humanism deeply rooted in the soil, culture, and civilisation of India,' he wrote. Mr. Malviya also took aim at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of attempting to undo what Tagore stood for. 'Mamata Banerjee and her cohorts, who are stoking a spurious and divisive controversy over the language and identity of Bengal and Indian Bengalis, will never match Gurudev Tagore's grand vision of Indian unity,' he wrote. He insisted that for decades no government had recognised Bangla as one of India's most prominent languages with a defining role in the subcontinent's cultural and linguistic history. 'It is the (Narendra) Modi government which accorded Bangla the status of Classical Language on 3 October 2024, an acknowledgement of its profound impact on shaping the Indian mind,' Mr. Malviya wrote. 'The fake champions of Bangla bhasha, who aggressively promote Urdu as the official language of West Bengal to pander to the basest anti-Bangla sentiments of a certain group, are undermining the very 'harmony of one life' that Gurudev envisioned. They deserve nothing but contempt,' he concluded.

Maharashtra Minister Flagged Rapido's "Illegal" Op, It Is Now Sponsoring His Son's Event
Mumbai: A Maharashtra minister who had carried out a viral sting against a ride-hailing platform is facing opposition criticism after it has emerged that the same company is sponsoring his son's event. Just a month ago, State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik had exposed ride-hailing company Rapido's illegal bike taxi services in Mumbai. The opposition has pointed out that Rapido is the major sponsor for the Pro-Govinda League, a dahi handi competition organised by Mr Sarnaik's son, Purvesh, in Mumbai this year. On July 2, Mr Sarnaik booked a ride using the Rapido app to verify a senior official's claim that the app and its illegal bike taxi service were not functional. He booked a ride himself from his office in the Mantralaya to Dadar using a different name on the Rapido app. The bike reached his location within ten minutes. The rider was stunned to see the minister. "I am the Transport Minister. These rules are for your benefit," he was heard telling the visibly surprised rider in a video shared on his official X account. "You came here, for that I am giving you Rs 500," he said. Now, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar has said that Mr Sarnaik "secured" Rapido's sponsorship of his son's event by performing a "stunt". "The Transport Minister deserves congratulations for demonstrating to the Maharashtra government how to raise funds for their event. First, book a bike through a private app, then catch the poor, unsuspecting bike rider, perform a stunt claiming that riding a bike through the app is against the rules, make videos of it to promote how smart and alert the Transport Minister is, and build their own image. Instead of praising this action, some people are opposing it," he said. His son, Purvesh, also brushed aside the opposition's criticism. "Apart from Rapido, there are other sponsors too. Rohit Pawar should not bring politics into the game. This event has no relation to Pratap Sarnaik. I am the president of the Pro-Govinda League," he said.
