
Supreme Court directs FSSAI to implement Front-of-Pack nutrition labels on packaged foods

New Delhi [India], July 15 (ANI): The Supreme Court of India has directed Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to execute the Front-of-pack nutrition labels on packaged food, Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora and chair of Parliamentary Committee on Subordinate Legislation, posted on the social media platform 'X'.'The Supreme Court has directed @fssaiindia to implement simple front-of-pack nutrition labels on packaged food. As Chair of Parliament's Subordinate Legislation Committee, I've recommended studying Singapore's clear A-to-D Nutri-Grade system,' Milind Deora posted on 'X'.According to the post by Milind Deora, this move will assist FSSAI to 'comply without further delays & empower Indian consumers to make healthier choices, reversing India's rising #obesity crisis.'The Union health ministry has also recently proposed displaying sugar and oil boards as an initiative to promote healthier dietary habits in various settings.
According to the ministry's proposal, these boards will serve as visual behavioural nudges in schools, offices, public institutions etc. displaying key information about hidden fats and sugars in everyday foods.On Monday, Deora told ANI that India should regulate unhealthy foods sold by multinational companies, along with Indian snacks such as jalebis and samosas, to deal with rising obesity problems.'Placing greater stringent regulations on unhealthy foods like jalebi, like samosa, this is a welcome step,' Deora said.''As chairman of the Parliament Subordinate Legislation Committee, which has members of parliament from all parties, we are at present examining this very issue. Along with the agency called the FSSAI which is the food regulator in our country,' the Rajya Sabha MP said on Monday.The move is part of the Union Health ministry's flagship initiatives under National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) to promote sustainable behavioural changes in workplaces.These include reducing excessive consumption of oil and sugar, both of which are key contributors to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and other lifestyle-related disorders. 297 new day care cancer centres approved for FY26: Centre
The Union government has informed that Parliament has approved 297 new day care cancer centres across the country for FY26. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav stated the measures undertaken by the government in tackling cancer incidences in the country. In the Union Budget announced in February, the government had proposed that 'all district hospitals will have day care cancer centres. About 200-day care cancer centres will be established in 2025-26". The day-care centres are aimed at providing chemotherapy -- an important part of cancer treatment -- to cancer patients. "Following the announcement in the Union Budget 2025-26, so far, 297 new day care cancer centres have been approved for the financial year 2025-26. These centres aim to provide follow-up chemotherapy for patients referred by tertiary care centres,' Jadhav said. 'Unit cost for establishment of day care cancer centres may be up to Rs 1.49 crores as per the requirement and gaps at that facility,' he added. Currently, there are 364 such centres across the country. Further, the Minister noted that the government has set up "19 State Cancer Institutes (SCI) and 20 Tertiary Care Cancer Centres (TCCC) in different parts of the country' under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD). The Centre also provides financial assistance to these centres for the procurement of radiotherapy equipment, diagnostic equipment, surgical equipment, and enhancement of indoor civil work and patient facilities for cancer and such other purposes relevant to diagnosis, treatment, and care of cancer. 'The maximum permissible assistance for SCI is Rs. 120 crores and for TCCC is Rs 45 crores,' Jadhav said. The National Cancer Institute at Jhajjar (Haryana) and the second campus of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute, Kolkata, have been set up to provide advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities. Cancer treatment facilities have also been approved in all 22 new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). In addition, a population-based initiative for screening, management, and prevention of common NCDs, including cancer, has been rolled out as a part of Comprehensive Primary Health Care in the country under National Health Mission (NHM) through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs. In a bid to boost cancer care in the country, the government has also enhanced cancer education. Jadhav stated that the National Medical Commission has taken steps for ease of starting Postgraduate (PG) courses, including for Oncology. 'One can start a PG course with two seats, even with two faculties, without having a senior resident. In many specialties, bed requirements for unit formation have been reduced,' the MoS said. 'Medical colleges/ institutes can apply for starting PG course one year after medical college has been permitted to start an undergraduate course; and government medical colleges can start PG course simultaneously with UG course,' the Minister added.

India asks citizens to avoid travelling to border areas of Cambodia, Thailand amid clashes
India's embassies in Thailand and Cambodia have asked Indian citizens not to travel to the border areas of the two countries amid clashes between Bangkok and Phnom Penh. The diplomatic mission in Cambodia on Saturday issued an advisory urging Indians to avoid going to the border areas. The embassy also shared emergency contact details for Indian citizens requiring assistance. 'In case of any emergency, Indian nationals may approach the Embassy of India, Phnom Penh at +855 92881676 or email it added. This came a day after the Indian embassy in Thailand advised Indian travellers to check updates issued by Thai authorities. A link to an update shared by the Tourism Authority of Thailand said that 'border zones' had been affected in seven provinces because of restrictions and that martial law had been imposed in select districts. These places are not recommended for travelling, the Indian embassy quoted the Thai tourism authority as saying. The advisories came amid the worst border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia in 13 years. Fighting, which began on Wednesday, has involved heavy artillery, air strikes and rocket fire across several disputed border areas. At least 33 persons have been killed in the conflict. Of the 13 deaths in Cambodia, eight were civilians and five soldiers. In Thailand, six military personnel and 14 civilians were killed, AFP reported. While Bangkok has accused Phnom Penh of targeting civilians and using rockets, Cambodia has condemned Thailand's alleged use of cluster munitions, Reuters reported. The fighting marks a sharp escalation in a long-running dispute between the countries that contest several stretches of land along their border. At least 28 persons had dead in previous clashes between 2008 and 2011. A 2013 United Nations court ruling had largely eased tensions. But the current crisis was triggered in May after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a fresh clash, AFP reported.
