Sanjay Raut demands resignation of Eknath Shinde over SC strictures on twin tunnel tender
NASHIK: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP
Sanjay Raut
demanded the resignation of deputy chief minister
Eknath Shinde
, who is the minister for public works (public enterprises), over Supreme Court strictures on the MMRDA tender process.
Raut, who was in Jalgaon on Saturday, said, "If Prime Minister Narendra Modi stands against corrupt practices, he should immediately call for the resignation of Eknath Shinde over the issue."
The Supreme Court passed strictures on the tender related to the Thane Ghodbunder Bhayandar twin tunnel.
Raut alleged, 'There was a direct appreciation of Rs 3,000 crore in the Rs 14,000 crore contract for the twin tunnel. L&T Company challenged the tender in the Supreme Court, which passed strictures."
Raut claimed that chief minister Devendra Fadnavis was also unwilling to take action against corruption in the state. "After the Supreme Court's strictures, all that Fadnavis said was that he would not tolerate corruption in the bureaucracy. How has Fadnavis failed to see the corruption in this case and failed to take any action against it," he said.
Raut also commented on NCP SP chief Sharad Pawar joining the BJP camp, saying that those with Pawar were confident that he would not join communal forces. 'Pawar has been the torchbearer of Shahu, Phule, and Ambedkar ideologies, and all those who are with Sharad Pawar are confident that he will never join hands with such forces,' said Raut.

Supreme Court quashes cognisance in ED case against Rathi Steel & Its
Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel New Delhi: The Supreme Court has set aside the cognisance of a prosecution complaint (equivalent to a chargesheet) taken by a lower court in a money laundering trial involving M/s Rathi Steel and its top executive, who were booked by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a coal allocation case.A division bench comprising Justices AS Oka (who retired last month) and Ujjal Bhuyan set aside the cognisance order dated November 20, 2024, solely on the ground of "non-compliance" with new provisions under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). These provisions require trial courts to issue a show-cause notice to an accused before summoning them to face that it had not expressed any opinion on the merits of the ED's complaint, the bench directed executive Kushal Kumar Agarwal to appear before the trial court on July 14, "so that he can be given an opportunity of being heard in terms of the proviso to sub-section (1) of Section 223 of the BNSS." The order also stated, "We make it clear that no further notice shall be issued by the Special (trial) Court to the appellant (Agarwal)."Section 223 of the BNSS applies specifically to "complaints" and not to cases investigated by the police or the CBI. Advocate Vijay Aggarwal, representing the petitioners, argued that under Section 223, accused persons are entitled to be heard before being summoned by the trial court. He emphasized that this section stipulates that "no cognisance of an offence shall be taken by the magistrate without giving the accused an opportunity of being heard."In response, ED's counsel argued that under the new BNSS provision, the hearing granted to the accused is limited to determining whether a case is made out to proceed based solely on the complaint and its accompanying ED further contended that cognisance is taken of the offence-not the offender. Thus, once cognisance is taken, it need not be taken again when supplementary or further complaints are filed. "Therefore, at that stage, there will be no occasion to give the accused the opportunity to be heard," the ED's counsel these arguments, the Supreme Court stated in its order that the ED's submissions "need not be considered, as the same do not arise in this appeal at this stage." However, it added, "We make it clear that the said contentions are expressly kept open and can be raised before the Special Court."

Association plea to implement 4% PwD quota in promotion
Bhubaneswar: Members of the Odisha Disabled Govt Employees' Welfare Association on Sunday expressed concern over the non-implementation of the statutory 4% reservation in promotions for employees with benchmark disabilities. During a state-level meeting of the association, the members unanimously resolved to submit a memorandum to chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on the issue. "Despite the binding directive issued by Orissa high court on Jan 30 last year directing the state govt to implement the 4% reservation within three months, the order remains unimplemented. This delay not only violates the court's directive but also disregards the department of personnel and training office memorandum issued on May 17, 2022, as well as the Supreme Court's judgment in Siddaraju vs state of Karnataka, both of which affirm the right to reservation in promotion for persons with benchmark disabilities," said Hemant Kumar Subudhi, president of the association. "The demand is rooted in the statutory provisions of subclause (1) of Section 34 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. We want implementation and compliance with the legal provision," he added. He said their pleas have not been heard even after repeated representations. "As a result, eligible employees with disabilities across various departments continue to be denied their rightful opportunities for career progression," he added. An official of the social security and empowerment of persons with disabilities department said the demand is under active consideration of the govt.
