Mahayuti govt reduces crop compensation after increasing it before elections
Deputy CM Eknath Shinde MUMBAI: The Mahayuti govt has reduced the compensation it used to give farmers for crop losses due to unseasonal rains and other natural calamities. It did this by rolling back an order that increased the compensation, which was issued in January 2024 before the Lok Sabha and assembly polls in the state. The hike was announced when the Mahayuti govt was led by Eknath Shinde. The directive to reduce the compensation and bring it back on par with Central govt norms on relief was issued last week, just a few days after heavy rains extensively damaged crops in the state. In 2024, the state increased the amount of land eligible for compensation from 2 hectares to 3 hectares. It increased the compensation for non-irrigated crops from Rs 8,500 to Rs 13,600 per hectare. Compensation for irrigated crops was increased from Rs 17,000 to Rs 27,000 per hectare. For horticulture and cash crops, it was increased from Rs 22,500 to Rs 36,000 per hectare. The compensation area and amount will now be reversed to the earlier rates. Also, the subsidy shall be admissible only once for the entire season for compensation for damage to agricultural crops. The new govt resolution issued states, 'In view of the recent agricultural losses caused by unseasonal rains, drought, and floods in the state, it has been decided to provide subsidy as per the instructions of the National Disaster Management Authority after a discussion in the cabinet meeting held on May 27.' Compensation for calamities is paid through the State Disaster Relief Fund, which receives 75% of its funds from the Centre and 25% from the state. Farmer groups accuse the govt of cheating farmers. 'They promised higher compensation before elections and then rolled it back. This is cheating and it shows that the govt is anti-farmer,' said Rajan Kshirsagar from the Kisan Sabha. 'Natural calamities are driven by climate change and are only going up. The govt needs to stand by its farmers,' he said.

Mumbai property tax rises by 15% on average; flats under 500 sq ft remain exempt
The Mumbai Civic body, also known as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has restructured property tax in the Mumbai real estate market by an average of almost 16%, according to a statement issued by the corporation. According to BMC, there has been no amendment or increase in the structure or rate of property tax. However, due to ready reckoner rates in Mumbai increasing from FY26, the property tax automatically stands to be increased, owing to the base of capital value going upwards. To cite an example, if the annual property tax for a flat owner was ₹50,000, it would now be above ₹57,500. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has increased property tax for the first time in nearly a decade. The last revision took place in 2015, but the scheduled hike in 2020 was deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under Section 154 (1C) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, the capital value of properties must be revised every five years, which typically leads to an increase in property tax. Also Read: Major relief for homeowners: ITAT rules redeveloped flats not taxable as 'other income' According to the BMC, flats smaller than 500 sq ft have been exempted from property tax since 2022, and the decision taken earlier remains as it is. Hence, the BMC clarified that there is zero levy on these flats. There are 4,00,000 housing societies in Mumbai. BMC individually issues property tax bills to flat owners. The Maharashtra government announced in 2022 that it would waive property tax for flats below 500 sq ft, a move that it said would help citizens save ₹460 crore annually. Also Read: Mumbai's unsold luxury housing inventory rises 36% in Q1 2025 after two-year decline: ANAROCK The BMC announced on May 29 in a statement that it has deferred its much-debated fee on solid waste management, or garbage tax, in view of the increase in property tax. According to the BMC, the user fee was meant to cover the daily collection of solid waste from individual homes as well as commercial and industrial establishments. The levy was proposed in April; the fee ranges from ₹100 to ₹7,500, depending on the size and nature of the establishment. Sanjay Raut: Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde should resign over Supreme Court strictures on twin tunnel tender
Nashik: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut called for deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde's resignation from his position as minister for public works (public enterprises), following Supreme Court's strictures on the MMRDA tender process. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During his visit to Jalgaon on Saturday, Raut said, "If Prime Minister Narendra Modi stands against corrupt practices, he should immediately call for the resignation of Eknath Shinde over the issue." The Supreme Court passed strictures on the tender related to the Thane Ghodbunder Bhayandar twin tunnel. Raut said, "There was a direct appreciation of Rs 3,000crore in the Rs 14,000crore contract for the twin tunnel. L&T challenged the tender in the Supreme Court, which passed strictures." Raut expressed concern about chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's inaction towards state corruption. "After the Supreme Court's strictures, all that Fadnavis said was that he would not tolerate corruption in the bureaucracy. How did Fadnavis fail to see the corruption in this case and fail to take any action against it?" he asked. Addressing NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar's potential alignment with BJP, Raut assured that Pawar's supporters were certain he would not join communal forces. "Pawar has been the torchbearer of Shahu, Phule, and Ambedkar ideologies, and all those who are with Sharad Pawar are confident that he will never join hands with such forces," said Raut. Raut criticised the three ministers from Jalgaon regarding a tribal woman's roadside delivery. "The world knows how the three parties won the elections by manipulating EVMs, electoral rolls, and using administrative force. The govt benches still are unable to believe they won elections. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They are not grounded and, hence, they fail to understand the needs of the people. We fail to understand why a tribal woman was forced to deliver a baby on the roadside due to a lack of medical facilities despite three cabinet ministers coming from the district," he said. Core committee to decide candidates During a meeting with party functionaries in Jalgaon, Raut announced the formation of a six-member core committee. This committee would analyse the Jalgaon Municipal Corporation situation and compile a list of potential candidates for the upcoming corporation elections.

Expedite road infra projects across Maharashtra before monsoon: Shinde
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to expedite the execution of ongoing road infrastructure projects across the state, particularly completion of the key works on the Mumbai-Nashik highway before the onset of monsoon. Reviewing the status of various MSRDC-led infrastructure projects across the state in the presence of MSRDC Managing Director Anilkumar Gaikwad and other senior officials, Shinde said all these projects must be completed within the stipulated timeline. He also said that like CIDCO and MMRDA, MSRDC should also participate in slum redevelopment projects. After reviewing the Mumbai-Nashik highway, the Deputy Chief Minister instructed that the delayed works on the highway be expedited. 'If the concretisation of road sections cannot be completed before monsoon, then those stretches should be made traffic-worthy by asphalting them. Concretisation on 31 kilometres on this route is still pending,' said Shinde. 'Works at Pimpalas–Charoti and on the railway overbridge should also be expedited. If contractors are being negligent in completing the works on time, then they should be served a notice and warned as well,' said Shinde. Shinde directed that traffic movement on the Thane–Nashik highway must remain smooth throughout the monsoon season. He also emphasized the timely completion of the missing link on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, stating it should be open to the public by December. Additionally, he reviewed progress on the proposed Konkan access-controlled Expressway, intended to improve connectivity between Mumbai and Sindhudurg and provide faster access to the Konkan region. He also instructed to speed up work on shelter centers in Konkan. 'To provide temporary shelter to citizens during recurring natural calamities in Konkan, MSRDC planned 86 shelter centres. Work on 37 of these shelter centres is currently in progress. These works should be expedited. Also, these shelter centres should preferably be built near schools so that after the monsoon, schools can also use them for their activities,' he said. The Shaktipeeth highway project, which will reduce the current 18-hour journey from Nagpur to Goa to just eight hours, was also reviewed. Given the opposition to this project from Kolhapur, Latur, Dharashiv, and Beed, it was suggested to initiate dialogue with the villagers. 'The objective is to create a complete access-controlled grid connecting Nagpur and Goa, similar to the Samruddhi Expressway, which will benefit farmers and citizens in 12 districts. Therefore, efforts should be made to communicate with farmers and take them into confidence,' said Shinde further instructing to speed up work on New Mahabaleshwar.
