A click with stardom
My student Prem, whom I teach online, lives in London and likes Hindi movies. When I explained that Macbeth, in the play of that title, contravenes a code of conduct by killing his guest, Prem pointed out that, in Padmaavat, a ruler refrains from harming an enemy under his roof. He went on to ask if I had seen Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh in person, or any of the Bollywood celebrities immortalised at Madame Tussaad's wax museum..I told Prem that, of those famous figures, I had only met Amitabh Bachchan. It was over five decades ago, at the premiere of Anand. I had hoped to catch a glimpse of Rajesh Khanna but missed him. He proved equally elusive at Vauhini Studios, Madras (now Chennai), during the shooting of Haathi Mere Saathi. Elephants were endearingly approachable, and so was Sujit Kumar, who chatted pleasantly. I was not unduly disappointed. I had tracked down Rajesh Khanna before he attained superstar status, and my brother and I were photographed with him..Case of the missing outfit. After my offbeat class with Prem, I travelled back in memory to my autograph-hunting days. In 1971, a classmate and I interviewed Sunil Dutt for our college magazine. As we discussed new-wave cinema and his recently released production, Reshma Aur Shera, Nargis served us tea and cakes and introduced Sanjay and his sisters..I was not always welcomed so warmly. Indeed, it was often difficult to gain access to film folk. One morning, my brother, cousins, and I set off to the Oberoi Intercontinental in New Delhi. Scampering past the curious receptionist, we took the lift to a certain suite. Hema Malini shines brightly in my recollection. Her luminous complexion was devoid of make-up, and her lustrous locks hung loose. Clad in a shimmering blue silk sari, she greeted us graciously..That magical moment was marred by her father. 'Sign their books quickly and send them away,' he told his daughter in Tamil, unaware that we understood him perfectly. Looking back, I wish we had surprised him by conversing in that language..I could tell Prem about these exciting encounters and others with Sadhana, Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rehman, Jeetendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Rajendra Kumar and the great Prithviraj Kapoor. The youngster is unlikely, however, to be familiar with the talented titans of my generation. Besides, my weekly sessions with Prem should focus on Shakespeare, not showbiz!

This actress was killed in a plane crash, Karisma Kapoor played her role in biopic; She was…, movie is…
Some accidents leave behind scars so deep that their stories are never forgotten. The shadow of the Ahmedabad plane crash is one such tragedy that won't fade away anytime soon. Screams, cries, sobs, tears, and the scene of death… it's impossible to forget. Every death carries a story. History has witnessed many such heart-wrenching accidents that leave lasting wounds. One such story is that of the famous Indian film actress Zubeidaa Begum. In the 1940s, she was known for her courage and beauty, which became part of cinematic history. Tragically, Zubeidaa too lost her life in a horrific plane crash, a tragedy that is still remembered even after all these years. Many questions have been raised about this accident. Was it an accident or a conspiracy? Usually, every accident leaves this question. In that accident, Zubaidaa Begum's husband, who was Maharaja Vijayendra 'Victor' Singh of Fatehpur, was also killed. A story that ended before it could be completed, leaving many questions unanswered. Even today, that question often comes in the mind. After all, what happened in the plane that day? It is worth mentioning that Zubeidaa Begum was a Hindi film actress who worked in numerous films. She began her career during the silent film era, and whether the roles were small or big, she performed each one with full dedication. However, beyond her film career, she had a personal life that not everyone was aware of, not even her own family. Her father, in particular, was unaware of her passion for acting and was strictly against her working in films. Despite all the opposition, Zubeidaa Begum carved out space for her dreams and emotions. This unwavering determination was the most remarkable quality of her personality. Zubeida Begum's life, full of mysteries and ups and downs, was a film story in itself, and this is why famous filmmaker Shyam Benegal made a film on her in the year 2001, named Zubeidaa. This National Award-winning film holds a special place in Shyam Benegal's filmography, which was a new link to Mammo and Sardari Begum, but it was a historic opportunity for Karisma Kapoor in the role of Zubeidaa. In the movie, Karisma Kapoor portrayed Zubeidaa's life on screen very well and also garnered praise. Manoj Bajpayee is also in the movie. He played the role of Maharaja Vijayendra Singh. The special thing is that the screenplay of this film was written by none other than Zubeidaa's real-life son, writer and filmmaker Khalid Mohammad. There are not many stories of Zubeda's life after marriage. Some things are said broadly, which Shyam Benegal has shown in the film. After this, the king's political ambitions started growing. He formed a party and took the initiative to contest elections. One day, when he was about to go to the election campaign, Zubeidaa also insisted on going with him. The Raja did not want to take Zubeidaa along, but she was adamant. It is said that the king himself was very fond of flying planes. But the night before the accident, he could not sleep properly. The plane crash happened while going for an election campaign It was the ill-fated morning of 26 January, 1952. The plane in which Raja and Zubeidaa flew crashed in Godwar, Rajasthan. Both of them died in this accident. Shyam Benegal's film on the plane crash is considered notable, which is mentioned many times. It became a cult classic. It shows that the actress had to face difficulties from her people while fulfilling her ambitions on many fronts. Shyam Benegal has presented the companionship shown by Karisma Kapoor and Rekha in their roles as the two wives of Manoj Bajpayee, who played the king, very well.
