Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) has unveiled its latest destination marketing film, 'Not a Vacation…Our Vacation' – a bold and witty take on what makes the emirate a holiday destination unlike any other.
Produced by Goldmine, directed by renowned filmmaker Mark Middlewick and brought to life with creative direction from Impact BBDO, the film offers a fresh perspective on the UAE's northernmost emirate. Breaking away from conventional travel narratives, it redefines Ras Al Khaimah as a place where curiosity sparks unexpected discoveries, and every experience feels refreshingly different.
With Ras Al Khaimah gaining global recognition as a must-visit travel destination, the film's upbeat approach aims to reshape perceptions, challenge clichés and highlight the emirate's rich offerings in a way that is fun, dynamic and full of personality.
It's narrative cleverly juxtaposes the ordinary with the extraordinary, playing with contrasts to showcase what sets Ras Al Khaimah apart, where travellers (not tourists) venture beyond the usual to discover hidden gems, rich traditions, and exhilarating outdoor experiences.
"Ras Al Khaimah isn't just another vacation spot – it's a destination that offers something entirely unique," said Alka Winter, Vice President, Destination Marketing & Communications, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority. "With this campaign, we wanted to move away from the typical tourism marketing playbook and embrace a more fun, authentic, and engaging narrative. We're inviting travellers to experience a destination where the unexpected becomes the unforgettable, where nature, adventure, and heritage come together in a way that's distinctly Ras Al Khaimah.'
The film's fresh, experience-driven approach aligns seamlessly with 2025's emerging travel trends, as highlighted in Expedia's latest Unpack '25 report. With travellers increasingly prioritising destinations that offer distinctive, off-the-beaten-path experiences, Ras Al Khaimah stands out as a prime example of what the report calls a "Detour Destination" – a place that offers a refreshing alternative to overcrowded tourist hubs. According to the report, 63% of global travellers are more likely to seek out unique destinations that offer authenticity, culture and outdoor adventures.
"When RAKTDA approached us with this project, we saw an opportunity to push the boundaries of traditional destination marketing," commented Martino Caliendo, Creative Director at Impact BBDO. "We wanted to challenge expectations, using humour and contrast to highlight the unique 'RAK Effect' – a place where curiosity leads to something truly different. This campaign marks the first step in a collaboration that we are confident will be an incredible journey for all of us."
Ras Al Khaimah's tourism sector soared to new heights in 2024, achieving record-breaking visitor numbers and unprecedented growth. The emirate welcomed 1.28 million overnight arrivals, driving a 12% increase in tourism revenues and further cementing its reputation as the region's fastest-growing tourism destination.

Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah Reveals UAE's First Cross-Emirate Hiking Trail
Fujairah Adventures and Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance adventure tourism across the UAE. The agreement, signed at Fujairah's International Conference on Adventure Tourism on April 30, took place in the presence of Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah. The partnership will connect the mountainous regions of both emirates, creating the UAE's first cross-emirate hiking trail. This initiative aims to link Ras Al Khaimah's peaks and adventure facilities with Fujairah's wadis and heritage paths. 'This collaboration isn't just about expanding our tourism offerings – it's about creating meaningful connections between landscapes, communities, and cultures in ways we've never seen before. By partnering with Fujairah Adventures, we are not only enriching adventure tourism in the UAE but also setting a precedent for cross-destination collaborations that celebrate diversity, champion sustainability, and inspire a new era of exploration across the region's most breathtaking terrains,' Brent Anderson, Chief Commercial Officer, RAKTDA said. The partnership will create an integrated experience spanning mountains, wadis, coastal areas, and deserts whilst prioritising environmental conservation, cultural heritage, and community engagement. Ras Al Khaimah features Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest peak, which hosts attractions including Jais Flight, Jais Sledder, Jais Sky Tour, and the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp. The emirate also offers a 97km hiking network and the 40km Jebel Jais Rim Trail. Fujairah contributes the Fujairah Adventure Park and numerous trails, including the Altaybbah Historic Route, Seven Summits Hike, Ain Al Sheria Trail, Wadi Al Dahir Hike, Wadi Al Abadilah, Sal Khail Trail, and the Alaqqah Coastal Ridge. 'This MOU represents a strategic step toward strengthening the adventure tourism landscape in the UAE. By joining forces with Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, we enhance our collective presence on the international stage, positioning both emirates as key players in the region's adventure tourism sector. This collaboration allows us to share expertise, align development efforts, and create a more interconnected and competitive offering that attracts global adventurers while preserving the unique identity of each destination. The timing of this partnership corresponds with growth in the adventure tourism sector. From 2022 to 2025, adventure tourism has contributed significantly to the local economy, with projections estimating the sector will reach AED30 million by 2030. Global travel trends indicate the adventure tourism segment is expected to grow at an annual rate of 10-15 per cent over the next five years. Market studies suggest that by 2030, the market could contribute up to 35 per cent of the Middle East's total tourism revenue. This new agreement builds upon RAKTDA's existing partnerships, including its collaboration with Musandam Governorate in Oman to promote joint travel experiences.

Speaking on the opening day at the Business Events Stage, representatives from Dubai Economy and Tourism, the Abu Dhabi Convention and Exhibition Bureau, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, and international bodies like the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) and the International Association of Professional Congress Organisers (IAPCO) agreed that events are playing a transformative role in strengthening the region's economies, enhancing global appeal, and creating long-term legacies. Ahmed Al-Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, noted that iconic events such as the Dubai Shopping Festival have helped shape not only Dubai's cultural and economic identity but have also contributed to positioning the region as a world-class destination for events tourism. In Abu Dhabi, Mubarak Al Shamsi highlighted how hosting major exhibitions and conferences aligns with national development plans such as Vision 2030, focusing on sectors like healthcare, innovation, sustainability, and energy. 'Our strategy is not just about numbers; it's about building lasting economic and knowledge legacies,' he said. Iyad Rasbey, Vice President of Destination Tourism Development at Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, emphasised that business events have been a catalyst for growth across emerging destinations in the Gulf. 'MICE tourism now represents one of the most important contributors to Ras Al Khaimah's expansion, helping us connect globally and attract high-net-worth visitors,' he said. The trend is being felt across the Middle East, where a surge in tourism-focused investments and a strategic push towards hosting global summits, cultural events, and industry conventions are reshaping the region's future. Elsewhere during ATM, leaders from dnata Travel Group and Airbnb discussed microtrends such as sleep tourism, dark tourism and coffee tourism, advising tourism providers across the Middle East to adapt their marketing strategies to tap into evolving traveller behaviours.
