
HSENI: ‘Vital farm families put rules in place to keep children safe'
Farms are high-risk work environments where children can be exposed to hazards and dangers, including moving vehicles, heavy machinery, or animals, according to the HSENI.
HSENI deputy chief executive, Bryan Monson said: 'With the good weather and school holidays approaching we will see children spending more time outdoors and on the farm. Helping out and learning are all part of growing up on farms but with that comes more risk and a greater responsibility to keep them safe at all times,
'Sadly, in Northern Ireland we have seen children being seriously injured or killed on farms in preventable accidents.
'It is vital our farm families take the time now to assess the risks and put clear rules in place to keep their children safe,' Bryan added.
The deputy chief executive has encouraged parents and carers to visit the HSENI stand at the Balmoral show, and to meet the experts and get practical advice on keeping children safe on the farm.
The HSENI's key safety reminders include:
To have a safe play area for young children.
To prevent children from playing in or around farmyards and livestock.
To always know where children are and to supervise them when they are helping out.
That children under 13 years must not drive or ride on tractors and farm machinery, including quads.
To always keep children well away when mixing slurry.
The HSENI will be at stand EK92 in the Eikon Centre from Wednesday 14 – Saturday 17, May at the Eikon Exhibition Centre, Lisburn.

Last month, April 2025, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) launched an open call for farmer safety, health and wellbeing projects.
The project launched by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon and Minister of State with responsibility for farm safety, Michael Healy-Rae has been dedicated funding of €2.5 million under the farm safety budget for this year.
The projects will support and promote best practice and bring about behavioural change to minimise the risks to the safety, health, and wellbeing of everyone on farms, including farmers, workers, farm families and visitors.

'Measures under consideration' outlined for 6th NAP
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has outlined "measures under consideration" for Ireland's sixth Nitrates Action Programme (NAP), which is due to come into effect from January 1. The proposed objectives and measures were shared with stakeholders in a recent meeting of the Agriculture Water Quality Working Group, with the measures based on retaining the nitrates derogation. The measures included in the presentation are not the final measures to be included in the finalised NAP. But it is understood that the measures will be included in a letter that the government must submit to the European Commission outlining progress towards the next NAP. This letter has to be submitted to the commission by August 1, according to sources. A further meeting of the working group is due to take place next week with a view to finalising that letter to the commission, it is understood. According to a presentation given at the previous meeting, the department is focusing on the "right combination" of factors to improve water quality, with those factors being regulation, knowledge transfer, awareness raising, and incentivisation. The department said it aims to take "impactful measures grounded in science". The overall aim, according to the presentation, is to give the European Commission "confidence" in the steps Irish agriculture is taking on water quality, improving our chances of retaining the nitrates derogation. Among the regulatory measures being considered are enhancing famers' own knowledge of their nutrient balance, complemented by training and advice, and optimising nutrient and grassland management. The department also wants to improve nutrient distribution on fragmented farms, by moving nutrients to out blocks. This would be complemented by research carried out by Teagasc. Teagasc will also research the slurry and soiled water capacity requirements on Irish farms. The presentation also mentions chemical nitrogen allowances for grassland and arable crops, although sources indicated that the information provided at the meeting on this point was unclear. The presentation indicates that changes around shallow cultivation post-harvest on tillage land will be considered, as will be the timing of nutrient application. The department will also look to expand its organic nutrient storage database. According to the measures outlined, there will be a continued and increased focus on compliance and enforcement, based on a "standardised risk-based approach". In terms of cross-agency work, the department is proposing that the National Agricultural Inspection Authority (NAIP), which is overseen by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), would cross-report to the department on water quality enforcement, with prosecutions carried out where necessary.

Ensuring vaccine availability 'vital' as demand 'highly likely' to rise in coming months
Vaccine availability must be prioritised as the autumn season approaches, the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association (ICMSA) has said. Vaccination remains one of the most cost-effective methods to reduce disease within herds and offers optimal protection when administered correctly, the association highlighted. 'It not only safeguards the health of individual animals, but also strengthens the resilience of entire herds," ICMSA deputy president Eamon Carroll said. Carroll said that supply chains for certain vaccines had been uncertain and prone to availability "glitches" in recent years. He said that anything that mitigated against farmers maintaining their vaccination programmes to safeguard herd health was to be "rejected", and he advised farmers and veterinarians to contact the Department of Agriculture immediately if they encounter any shortages. 'ICMSA thinks it's highly likely that demand will rise in the coming months, so it is vital that supply is available and accessible to meet this need," Carroll added. "The department needs to be looking at this right now and getting rid of any supply issues that could undermine herd health." The ICMSA also recently advised farmers on bluetongue virus, urging them to be extra vigilant due to an increased risk. The chair of the association's livestock committee, Michael O'Connell said Ireland is currently one of the only countries in the EU that is free from bluetongue. O'Connell said that the Department of Agriculture is "doing everything possible" in relation to the virus. The department is running monitoring programmes across the southeast to ensure that any suspect case or fallen animal with unknown causes is being tested. 'Our colleagues in Northern Ireland have been able to access a vaccine for the most common known strain of the virus, BTV 3 since late July, but it is currently unavailable in the Republic of Ireland," O'Connell said.

Can cattle with TB lesions still enter the food chain?
Cattle found to have a bovine tuberculosis (TB) lesion can still be declared fit for human consumption according to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM). TB is a zoonotic disease, meaning humans can contract it, therefore the safe handling of bovine produce with suspicions of TB is critical. Every animal that is sent to slaughter for human consumption in Ireland - even from non-restricted herds - is subject to post-mortem veterinary inspections. As part of this process a selection of glands (lymph nodes) are inspected, as well as lungs, chest cavity, and abdominal organs to check for any signs of TB lesions. DAFM confirmed to Agriland that all bovine found to have TB following slaughter are handled in accordance to the EU Commission Regulation 2019/627 under article 33. This means if a TB lesion has been found in the lymph nodes of only one organ or part of the carcass, the animal is considered fit for human consumption and processed. However the affected organ or part of the carcass, as well as the associated lymph nodes are declared unfit for human consumption and will be discarded. In addition to this, the department stated that any animal found with two or more localised lesions in more than one area of the carcass at post mortem inspection stage, are declared unfit for human consumption. In terms of dairy, milk from any reactor animals is prohibited from entering the food chain from the moment TB is diagnosed in the herd. DAFM also stated, with food safety as a priority, that any animals which have reacted positively or inconclusively to TB are slaughtered separately at the end of the day. This is done in an effort to avoid the risk of contamination of other carcasses, the slaughter line and staff present in the slaughterhouse. With TB incidence ramping up, DAFM recently confirmed that there were 19,610 total reactors between January 1 and July 20 of 2025, while the 12-month rolling figure between June 2024 and June 2025 came in at 43,290 reactors. From that, 3,459 animals from non-restricted bovine TB herds, were slaughtered with suspicions of TB lesions between January 1, 2025 and July 20, 2025, with 1,758 animals from that figure, confirmed to be infected following laboratory testing of tissues.
