A 13-year-old girl died after allegedly setting herself ablaze in Odisha's Bargarh district on Monday, said police. This is the fourth such incident within a month in the state.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, the victim was a Class 8 student from Paikmal block of the district.
HT cited police as saying that the teenage girl had gone to her maternal uncle's house over the weekend to meet her mother and celebrate Raksha Bandhan.
Police said the girl set herself on fire at a field near her house at around 7.30 am on Monday. The girl allegedly poured petrol over her body. After villagers spotted her burning, they rushed to her rescue and douse the fire but not before she suffered serious burn injuries. Thereafter, she was rushed to VIMSAR medical college in Burla where she succumbed to injuries, police added.
The exact cause of the incident remains unknown, and an investigation is currently underway, police said. The girl's father works as a migrant labourer, while her mother has been living at her parental home.
Earlier on July 12, a 20-year-old woman student in Balasore's FM College set herself on fire in her college campus and died at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on July 14. On July 19, a minor girl was allegedly set on fire by three miscreants in Balanga. She died at AIIMS Delhi on August 2.
On August 6, charred body of a third-year female undergraduate student was recovered from her house in Pattamundai (rural) police station area of Kendrapara district.

Ludhiana: 38 checkpoints set up ahead of I-Day
A day after Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav directed all district police chiefs to step up security ahead of Independence Day, the Ludhiana police intensified checking across the city and set up 38 special checkpoints on Tuesday. Sharma said that both day and night checking operations have been scaled up, with the checkpoints placed at strategic locations across the city under the supervision of gazetted officers. 'The deployment of police personnel on the roads has been increased from 200 to 600. We have also received additional force to ensure foolproof security,' he added. Apart from road checkpoints, police teams will carry out security inspections at high-footfall areas, including Inter state bus terminal Ludhiana, the railway station, parking lots, and major markets. On Monday, DGP Yadav had reviewed security preparations in border districts and key cities, including Ludhiana, Amritsar and Jalandhar, giving clear instructions on inter-district coordination, high-visibility nakas, and 24x7 surveillance. He had directed all commissioners of police and senior superintendents of police to ensure visible police presence at vital spots, intensify domination operations, and adopt preventive and detective measures to maintain peace and harmony during the Independence Day celebrations.

Ludhiana: Raped for four years, alleges woman; 1 booked
The division number 2 police have booked a Janakpuri resident for allegedly blackmailing and raping a woman for at least four years. The woman stated the accused claimed to be in possession of lewd videos of her and threatened to circulate it on social networking sites. The victim alleged that later the accused started blackmailing her. (HT Photo) The accused has been identified as Sahil Arora of Janakpuri. The complainant, who is also a resident of the same locality, alleged that in the past four years, the accused harassed her mentally and physically. When she asked him for marriage, the accused started threatening her. According to the complainant, she met the accused four years ago and befriended him. She alleged that the accused called her to meet in a room where the accused allegedly offered her cold drink laced with the sedatives. After she lost her consciousness, the accused raped her and recorded lewd videos of her, she mentioned in her complaint. The victim alleged that later the accused started blackmailing her. The accused used to establish physical relations with her forcefully. When she objected to it, the accused threatened her to make her videos viral on social networking sites. Further, she added that she gathered some courage and narrated her ordeal to her parents. Later, she filed a complaint to the police. Inspector Rajinderpal Singh, who is investigating the case, stated that an FIR under Sections 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 67(A) of the Information and Technology Act has been registered against the accused. A hunt is on for the his arrest, the police said, adding that the complaint was received on July 15 and the FIR was registered after a thorough investigation.

Punjab: Abohar fire officer caught red-handed while accepting bribe
The vigilance bureau (VB) on Tuesday arrested a fire officer on the charge of accepting a bribe of ₹20,000. The accused was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. (HT File) An official spokesperson of the VB said Varinder Kathuria, posted at Abohar, reportedly demanded the bribe from Rishav Kalia, resident of Abohar in Fazilka district. The complainant sells new fire extinguishers and refills old fire extinguishers. 'The accused reportedly demanded a bribe of ₹25,0000- ₹30,000 in the form of commission for the bills to be cleared by him. Besides this, the complainant met the accused at his house regarding clearance of his other bills also,' the spokesperson said. 'The complainant did not want to pay a bribe to him for his rightful work. He recorded his conversation with the accused and reported the matter to the VB unit in Fazilka,' the spokesperson added. Following the complaint, the accused was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe, amounting to ₹20,000, in presence of a government witness. A case has been registered against the accused. The accused fire officer will be produced in a court on Wednesday. The statement of the complainant was recorded at the Vigilance Bureau, Unit Fazilka. Subsequently the accused was caught red handed while accepting the bribe of ₹20,000/- in presence of Govt. witness and the said case was registered against the aforesaid accused u/s 7 P.C Act 1988, as Amended by PC (Amendment) Act, 2018 Police Station Vigilance Bureau, Range Ferozpur. The instant case is under investigation. The accused Fire officer will be produced before the competent court tomorrow.
