Mixed reaction among social media users over apology and compensation to Teoh's family
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) had apologised to Teoh's family over his death, adding it was prepared to offer a goodwill contribution to support the welfare and education of Teoh's child.
Several social media users urged the family to accept the apology and compensation and move on but there were others who voiced doubts over the apology and called for greater accountability.
One user, Boon Kiat Kor, commented: "How can an apology be enough? I just want to know why close the case and protect those responsible for his death?"
Another user, Metafora Estetika said: "It seems this story is not easily concluded. A mysterious death deserves clear answers, regardless of the outcome. The apology by the MACC chief holds little value in buying the public's emotions."
Pak Lah questioned the lack of action: "How did this happen? Who was involved? What action was taken?"
User Meight QuanQuan added:: "One can come to terms with death, but the perpetrator should not go unpunished. Compensation and truth should not be boxed into the same solution especially if the perpetrator is protected."
Teoh Beng Hock, a 30-year-old political aide, died on July 16, 2009, after falling from the 14th floor of the MACC Selangor office while being questioned.
His death led to a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) and further investigations, but the case was eventually classified as No Further Action (NFA) by the Attorney-General's Chambers.
While some Malaysians are still demanding answers, others believe it is time for the family to move on.
Facebook user Hishamuddin Bin Mohd Shah wrote plainly: "Just move on."
Another commenter, Azmi Ab Rahman, said: "Don't entertain this anymore. They asked for a Royal Commission, it was done. The police ruled NFA. Compensation has been offered. Why make more noise?"
Meanwhile, Kok Yuen Loh added: "What does the family expect? An apology is useless, do they want those allegedly involved to go to jail?"
Others, like Mat Shuk, called for closure. "Close the case. No need to entertain it. They've taken the compensation, enough time has been wasted."
And Muhd Syapiq said: "Still not over it? The man won't come back to life. No one will ever be caught. Just accept the compensation."
However, the family stood their ground, with Teoh's sister, Lee Lan, rejecting the MACC's apology during a press conference with the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA).
She described it as a publicity stunt tied to the 16th anniversary of his death and said an apology without accountability was meaningless.

NST Leader: Vigilance key to stopping scams
EFFORTS to stamp out financial scams, which are increasing in sophisticatication and resourcefulness, can't succeed if victims are consistently ignorant and naive. Various enforcement outfits, like the police, Bank Negara Malaysia and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), have done their best but scammers are still having a field day. The situation is akin to the authorities fortifying homes with formidable security systems but homeowners continue to fail to lock the doors. The cybersecurity measures against scammers are useless if the gullible allow themselves to be duped. We say this as the police take over the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) previously helmed by various enforcement outfits. Nevertheless, it makes sense that police control the NSRC: it speeds up victim support, improves recovery rates and adds legal muscle to freeze assets and prosecute scam syndicates. However, the NSRC must stay inclusive, leveraging expertise across all stakeholders like Bank Negara, MCMC, banks and telecommunications providers. The stakeholders must remain part of the anti-scam effort, especially for education, prevention and rapid action, like Singapore's "shared responsibility framework" where everyone maintains a fair, multi-prong system. They have to: in 2024, scammers bilked a staggering RM54 billion, roughly three per cent of Malaysia's gross domestic product. According to a survey of Malaysians by trust tech company Gogolook, about 74 per cent of respondents encountered scams every month through phone calls, messaging apps and social media platforms. Investment scams make up 23 per cent, followed by identity theft (21 per cent) and shopping scams (20 per cent). Unfortunately, 70 per cent of victims refused to report being scammed, mostly due to embarrassment but also scepticism on the effectiveness of alerting the authorities. Bearing this in mind, the NSRC's most vital task is constant education on how to spot a scam. Awareness campaigns are key but the only way is to develop a scam-resilient society. Scammers know they cannot beat a secure financial environment, but they understand human frailty. Victims often succumb to sweet talk or threats of legal action to part with their money. Other than managing public education, improving technology and artificial intelligence defences, and formulating stronger laws and international cooperation, the NSRC may have to deal with victims' emotional toll and the fact that financial scams threaten Malaysia's socio-economic foundations. In a nutshell, everyone, not just individuals, but also companies and the government, must keep reminding themselves to always be smart and vigilant.

Police's Special Branch holds anti-terrorism exhibition
BATU KAWAN: The police have brought an anti-terrorism exhibition to the National Unity Week at the Batu Kawan Stadium grounds, aimed at raising public awareness of the dangers of involvement in terrorist activities. Federal police Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division (E8) staff officer ACP Ridzuan Abdul Aziz said the exhibition is also intended to enhance public understanding of terrorism threats and the importance of community cooperation in countering such activities. "We are bringing the exhibition closer to the public to clearly explain what terrorism and extremism are, so people can understand and avoid involvement in such activities, which not only harm individuals but also the nation," he told Bernama at the event. He said that while the exhibition is rarely held, it was featured at the Batu Kawan SMP this time to showcase various items to the public, including homemade bombs made by terrorist groups, terrorism-related books and terrorist passports. The Unity Week, held at Batu Kawan Stadium, Penang, will run from July 17 to 20 and feature 35 engaging activities for visitors. Among the highlights of the exhibition, Ridzuan said, are displays of seized items used in terrorist activities, visual presentations of high-profile arrest operations and interactive sessions with E8 officers who explain the processes of detecting and monitoring extremist elements. Through the exhibition, police aim to educate the public on the early signs of involvement in terrorism, while stressing the vital role of public awareness in curbing the spread of extremism and radical ideologies. "Previously, some Malaysians were influenced by foreign terrorist groups, such as those operating in Syria. "However, in recent times, we have observed a shift towards domestic terrorism. "That is why we are presenting this exhibition, to prevent, especially young people, from falling prey to terrorist groups, as they are highly exposed to such content through social media. "These groups actively recruit through platforms like Telegram," he said. Ridzuan described the exhibition as part of a 'prevention through education' approach, targeting all segments of society, particularly youth and students. "We cannot rely on enforcement alone. "The public must be educated on how radical ideologies operate and how they recruit victims, particularly through social media platforms. "We want to make it clear that terrorism is a real and present threat, not merely a narrative meant to ignite fear," he said. – Bernama
