Chinese AI gains reshape global AI race in Q1 2025: Report
While the United States continues to dominate in reasoning models—with the top four spots on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index held by US labs—China has taken the lead in non-reasoning categories. The report notes that DeepSeek V3 0324 currently stands as the leading non-reasoning model, marking a significant milestone for Chinese AI labs, ANI reported.
'The rise of Chinese AI Labs marked a notable shift in global competition.
Chinese entities released models that rivalled US counterparts, particularly in open-weight models, with DeepSeek V3 0324 leading in non-reasoning categories,' the report highlights.
Labs outside the US and China have made progress but are not yet contenders in the frontier intelligence space, the report adds.
The global AI landscape remains highly dynamic, with continual progress driven by key players such as OpenAI, Google, and others.

OpenAI's o4-mini (high) has maintained its lead in overall performance, but competitors like Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro and xAI's Grok 3 have significantly narrowed the gap, intensifying the competition among top labs.
Reasoning models, which solve problems by generating intermediate steps before reaching an answer, are identified in the report as a critical frontier. Their widespread adoption across major labs has yielded meaningful gains in intelligence and problem-solving capabilities.
Artificial Analysis also points to technological shifts that have drastically reduced costs. The adoption of Mixture of Experts (MoE) architectures, smaller model designs, optimized inference, and new hardware have led to a more than 32-fold drop in AI inference costs since September 2024, and over 1000-fold since the launch of GPT-4 in 2023. These efficiencies are rapidly making high-performance AI more accessible.
Multimodal AI has also made significant strides, particularly in image and audio processing. OpenAI's GPT-4o set new quality benchmarks in image generation, while text-to-speech capabilities across the board became increasingly lifelike, enhancing the naturalness of AI dialogue.
Taken together, these trends signal a quarter marked by accelerated innovation, expanding access, and heightened global competition in the AI sector.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky says AI chatbots like GPT and Perplexity are not the ‘new Google': Here's why
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky shared his thoughts on AI chatbots, cautioning investors that AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can't yet be considered the 'new Google', which remains a dominant gateway to the internet. Speaking at the company's second-quarter earnings call for FY26, Chesky acknowledged the potential of AI but also noted that the technology is still developing and will take a lot of time until it is capable of leading. Speaking of AI chatbots, the CEO told investors, 'I don't think we should think of them as the 'new Google' yet.' He further added, 'I think we're still kind of feeling out of space.' Chesky also emphasised that while AI chatbots are powerful tools to work around customer service and personalisation, they aren't yet fully positioned to become a replacement for referrals that the dominant search engine Google brings. He also reminded people that AI models that power chatbots like ChatGPT are not proprietary. 'We also have to remember that the model powering ChatGPT is not proprietary. It's not exclusive to ChatGPT. We Airbnb can also use the API, and there are other models that we can use,' he said. He also mentioned that the success with AI depends on building a custom interface and fine-tuning the model for the right application instead of just focusing on having the best model. Airbnb shared during the call that its AI customer service agent in the United States reduced the percentage of guests contacting a human agent by almost 15%. The CEO revealed that Airbnb has also deployed a customer service agent that was built using 13 different models and trained on tens of thousands of conversations. This provision is currently available in English in the US. This year, Airbnb will roll it out to more languages, and by next year, it is expected to become more personalised and independent. This means that it will be able to understand if someone needs assistance cancelling a reservation, for which the bot will not only be able to tell them how to do it but also do it for them. The bot will also be capable of helping customers plan and book trips. Chesky also acknowledged that AI chatbots are definitely transforming how companies react with customers but he believes that it is not enough as the AI agents are enhancers and not replacements at least for now.

Google launches ‘Guided Learning' in Gemini to rival ChatGPT's Study Mode
Google has rolled out a a new feature called Guided Learning within its Gemini AI chatbot . Rival to OpenAI's Study Mode in ChatGPT, the feature is designed to work as an intelligent tutor. Guided Learning aims to help students understand concepts deeply rather than simply providing answers. 'Whether you're preparing for an exam about enzymes or exploring your passion for photography, Guided Learning is a collaborative thinking partner that helps you get it — each step of the way,' said Maureen Heymans, Google's VP of learning and sustainability. Guided Learning encourages participation through probing and open-ended questions that spark a discussion and provide an opportunity to dive deeper into a subject. The aim is to help you build a deep understanding instead of just getting answers. Google's Guided Learning, by contrast, offers a more structured, visual, and modular experience, resembling an interactive digital textbook . Both companies are responding to concerns that AI chatbots are being misused as shortcuts for homework. Their new tools aim to promote genuine learning and reduce academic dependency on instant answers. Free access and broader push To support adoption, Google is offering students in the US, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil a free one-year subscription to its AI Pro plan, which includes access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, Veo 3, and more. The company has also pledged $1 billion over three years to improve AI-powered education tools. AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now
