Why your job applications keep getting ghosted: Top tech executive reveals red flags young candidates ignore

In a world brimming with glossy
job titles
and Instagram-worthy offices, it's easy for
young professionals
to fall for roles that
sound
cool but have little alignment with their experience. But according to
Chidi Achara
, the Global Chief Product Officer at design and tech powerhouse
Huge
, that mismatch is one of the most common—and fatal—mistakes fresh candidates make.
Speaking to
CNBC Make It
at Fast Company's
Most Innovative Companies Gala and Summit
, Achara reflected on his years of experience leading teams at major companies including Nike and investment app Stash. With a keen eye for talent, Achara has conducted countless interviews and learned to spot red and green flags almost instantly.
Humor and Storytelling Go a Long Way
In an era where AI can mimic professionalism and resumes are increasingly polished, Achara values something far more human: personality.

'Do they have a sense of humor?' he told
CNBC Make It
. 'Do they have storytelling ability so they can communicate clearly?' These two qualities, he believes, are not just soft skills—they're essential signals that a candidate can gel with a team and carry ideas forward with impact.
It's not just about ticking technical boxes anymore. The ability to tell a story, to inject warmth and clarity into communication, is a trait that separates good hires from great ones, Achara emphasizes.

Applying Without Alignment
But for all the charm a candidate might bring, a lack of relevant experience is still a dealbreaker.
One of the biggest issues, according to Achara, is the 'scattergun approach' many young jobseekers take when sending out applications. 'They're just applying for a bunch of stuff because the title sounds cool, or they like the comp, or they like the location,' he explained.
This unfocused strategy may stem from desperation in a tough job market, but it rarely works. 'Hiring managers can very quickly see those people are not qualified,' Achara warned. And when it's clear that a resume doesn't match the role, 'I'm probably going to move on to the next.'
Experience Doesn't Always Mean Employment
Still, Achara isn't suggesting that recent graduates need years of full-time work behind them. He's a strong believer in the value of side projects, internships, and passion-driven pursuits. 'Say you're applying for a web developer or an engineering job and you've never worked full-time in either but on the side, you've built an app,' he said. If you've published it and drawn users—even just a few thousand—
that
counts.

Tailoring your resume to highlight such accomplishments can tilt the odds in your favor. 'Immediately, you'll take that person more seriously,' Achara noted. The hiring team is looking for
proof
of potential—not perfection.
So, what's the key takeaway for job-hunters, especially those at the start of their careers?
Be selective. Be strategic. And be honest.
'If they're just applying because they think it sounds like a cool job, then it's probably not going to work,' Achara concluded.

Take steps to ease tariff pain of exporters, CM urges PM

Chennai: In the wake of the US imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, chief minister M K Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to introduce special financial relief measures for exporters. In a letter to Modi, Stalin said, "To provide immediate relief, Union govt needs to consider introducing a special interest subvention scheme for all exporters affected by tariffs to improve liquidity and reduce cost burdens and accelerate Free Trade Agreements and bilateral arrangements to offset high-tariff market risks." Considering the scale of the problem, a special financial relief package including a moratorium on principal repayment, similar to the one implemented during COVID is necessary to support exporters, Stalin said. "This higher dependency on the US market clearly implies that tariff impact on TN will be disproportionately greater than for most other Indian states," Stalin said. TN accounted for 28% of India's textile exports in 2024-2025, the largest contributor among all Indian states, he said. "Especially, our textile sector employs nearly 75 lakh people and with aproposed 50% tariff, an estimated 30 lakh jobs are at immediate risk. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo To mitigate this crisis, it is essential to address structural issues that have long hindered our export competitiveness," he added. Sambhajinagar metro region development corporation shifts office, launches new logo

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The office of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Metropolitan Region Development Authority has been relocated to the Aurangabad Smart City Development Corporation Limited (ASCDCL). The inauguration of the new office took place on Friday, coinciding with Independence Day, and was attended by district guardian minister Sanjay Shirsat and CSMRDA chairman and divisional commissioner Jitendra Papalkar. The newly designed logo of the CSMRDA was unveiled during the event. Shirsat emphasised the importance of developing CSMRDA as a planned metropolitan region. "The scope of CSMRDA has increased now, covering many parts of the district along with the city area. The authorities should submit proposals for providing necessary amenities, manpower, infrastructure, and other facilities. The necessary funding for the same will be arranged through govt," he said. Papalkar highlighted the necessity to prevent encroachments within the CSMRDA limits. "We have to act now to ensure illegal structures do not mushroom in the CSMRDA limits. These limits also house important industrial areas which need to be provided with effective road connectivity," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Papalkar also advocated for a road connecting Shendra and Bidkin industrial hubs of AURIC and a separate ring road for CSMRDA limits. The CSMRDA encompasses approximately 342 villages, including newly merged fringe areas previously under the jurisdiction of Cidco. Nearly 143 villages from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar are also included within the ambit of the CSMRDA, with these areas becoming part of extended municipal regions due to rapid urbanisation.
