Free haircuts, oil change services draw crowds at 'Bakti Komuniti Madani' event

MUAR: Free haircuts and oil change services were among the main crowd-pullers at the Bakti Komuniti Madani programme here, held ahead of the 2025 National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Campaign launch tomorrow.
Ulo Barber owner Mohd Hilmi Hassan, 47, from Parit Jawa said he and his four workers were very busy as many people came for haircuts since the service started at 10am.
"By 12.15pm, we had already served over 60 people of different ages.
"We thought we would wrap up at noon, but had to extend the time because many were still waiting," he told Bernama at the event held at Taman Tun Sulaiman Ninam Shah.
Kampung Simpang Baba village chief Hussin Limat, 65, said the long wait was worth it, as the free haircut saved money and brought people together.
"I waited almost an hour because of the queue, but I think this is a very good programme.
"Even though it seems simple, it gives real benefits to the community," he said.
Mohd Muizzudin Mohd Nordin, 15, a student at SMK Agama Maahad Muar, said he arrived as early as 8am after learning about the free haircut service through a WhatsApp group.
"This free service really helps, especially for students like me.
"At a regular barber shop, it would cost around RM10 to RM20, so I didn't want to miss the chance.
"It's a great way to save and be presentable in time for National Month," he said.
Meanwhile, GiatMARA Bakri manager Affandi Abdul Rahim said all 60 bottles of engine oil allocated for the free oil change service were used up within two hours.
He said the service was carried out by eight GiatMARA trainees and attracted visitors of various races from across Muar.
In addition to a gotong-royong and kenduri rakyat, the Bakti Komuniti Madani programme, launched by Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, also featured an e-sports tournament, asam pedas cooking competition, traditional games and lucky draws.

Mandatory Speed Limiters For Commercial Vehicles Begin Oct 1

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- Commercial vehicles not equipped with a Speed Limitation Device (SLD) will not be allowed on the roads as they will fail vehicle inspections once the phased enforcement of the system begins on Oct 1. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the implementation of the SLD is a crucial step in controlling the speed of heavy vehicles and reducing the risk of fatal accidents, particularly involving buses and lorries, adding that such systems have long been mandatory in European countries and Singapore. 'Although I am aware that some industry players may push back, citing additional costs and so on, when it comes to ensuring road safety, human lives must take precedence. 'I hope all Yang Berhormat will support the government's efforts to ensure smooth implementation. Any opposition should be addressed by making it clear that safety must take priority over costs and business profits,' he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Dr Richard Rapu @ Aman Begri (GPS-Betong), who asked about the impact of SLD enforcement, its cost and maintenance, the implications of system failure and whether other countries have made SLD mandatory. Loke said the enforcement of SLD installation will be carried out in three phases, beginning this October. Phase 1, starting Oct 1, involves the verification of SLD functionality for all commercial vehicles manufactured after Jan 1, 2015. Phase 2, effective from Jan 1, 2026, involves the activation of SLD within the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) for commercial vehicles built before Jan 1, 2015. Phase 3 will require the retrofit installation of SLDs (with approval from the Road Transport Department) on any commercial vehicles not already equipped with the system. This phase will be enforced from July 1, 2026.

BUSINESS By Hasnah Jusid JOHOR BAHRU, July 29 (Bernama) -- Johor-based bus body manufacturer, Sun Bus Tech Sdn Bhd aims to complete 310 Rapid KL buses under a local assembly (Completely Knocked Down-CKD) project with Prasarana Malaysia Bhd by February 2026. Sun Bus Tech chief executive officer Shyan Phang said the project marks a major strategic shift for the company, moving from an export-heavy operation to one with significant domestic focus, in line with government policies to strengthen local assembly and industrial capacity. 'This is our first large-scale domestic project and currently takes up almost 100 per cent of our production capacity, with a target of producing 50 units per month,' she told Bernama during a visit to the company's plant here. The first batch of 10 buses was delivered last month, followed by another 15 units this week. Starting next month, the company will ramp up its deliveries to 40 to 50 units per month, she said. She added that the project is also opening up employment opportunities for locals, as the company works to build a sustainable workforce with local talent. Our target is to achieve a 90 per cent local workforce in the near future,' she said. Sunway launches Malaysia's 1st ZEEKR showroom, service centre

The move signals Sunway's growing stake in the EV market, with RM10m already invested and more showrooms planned across the country by SHAUQI WAHAB SUNWAY Trading & Manufacturing officiated the soft launch of Zeekr Space Sunway, alongside the unveiling of Malaysia's first official Zeekr service centre. Located in Sunway, the showroom and service centre aim to redefine electric vehicle (EV) ownership by offering a complete luxury electric experience — from customer engagement to aftersales support — under one roof. Speaking at the event, Sunway Trading & Manufacturing's CEO Yeoh Yuen Chee said the partnership with Zeekr Intelligent Technology Malaysia Sdn Bhd aligns with Sunway's broader vision of sustainable and smart mobility. The Zeekr Space Sunway showcases the brand's latest all-EVs, such as the sleek Zeekr 001 and the futuristic Zeekr X, models that have been making waves in global EV markets for their performance, luxury finishings and cutting-edge technology. These vehicles are powered by high-capacity batteries that deliver fast charging, long range and zero emissions — all while embodying the concept of uncompromised luxury. For Sunway, he said the launch is more than just a retail expansion — it reflects the Group's deeper mission to embed environmental, social and governance (ESG) values across all its verticals from property development and healthcare to education and now, mobility. Yeoh stressed that the Zeekr partnership is a natural extension of the group's sustainability roadmap, particularly its ambition to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. 'By introducing Zeekr to Malaysia, we are taking a meaningful step toward accessible, practical and sustainable low-carbon mobility,' he added. He further stressed that the transition to EVs must go hand in hand with infrastructure development and collaboration with digital platforms and charging providers. The Zeekr Space Sunway is therefore positioned not only as a sales touchpoint but also as a core for EV ecosystem building in the Klang Valley and beyond. (From left) Zeekr Intelligent Technology Malaysia country manager Tay Ee Ran, Yeoh and Zeekr Intelligent Technology Malaysia GM Jason Wang at the launch recently This initiative echoes Sunway Group's legacy of integrating sustainable innovation across its business models — including green buildings, solar adoption and circular economy practices — and now adds premium electric mobility to that evolving portfolio. Speaking at the official launch of a new Zeekr showroom and service centre, Head of the Automotive Division, Marcus Chye highlighted the group's strategic alignment with sustainability and EV infrastructure. 'We are heavily invested in Zeekr and this is proof of it,' he commented. He stated that almost RM10 million investment was poured into the new 10,000 sq ft showroom and service facility, which features four service bays and is expandable to double its current size. The facility is equipped with both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) charging stations and forms part of Sunway's broader plan to integrate EV mobility into its property ecosystem. The EV strategy is anchored in Sunway's commitment to ESG principles, with its developments already hosting what he claimed to be the highest number of JomCharge charging stations in the country. 'It's not just about the car, but it's also about the infrastructure. We have very good partners like JomCharge. Sunway properties probably have got the most JomCharge chargers in the whole of Malaysia,' he opined. Sunway has so far put 600 Zeekr vehicles on Malaysian roads, with the premium 009 model making up 80-90% of sales and the more affordable Zeekr 7X expected to take the lead moving forward. Expansion is firmly on the agenda, with Johor's Sunway Iskandar Puteri identified as the next showroom location within the next two months, followed by plans to move into Ipoh and eventually Penang. Despite challenges such as range anxiety and infrastructure limitations, Chye expressed optimism about Malaysia's EV future. 'As soon as you start using an EV car and drive it every day, you start to find out that this is really what you want to drive,' he argued. Sunway Marketing is now offering customers a chance to win a brand-new Zeekr X Premium in the 'Win-a-Zeekr' Customer Appreciation Contest 2025.
