Derek Thompson signs off at Wolverhampton

Thompson announced late last year he would retire from commentating in 2025 and subsequently identified Tuesday night's six-race fixture at Dunstall Park as his last ahead of his upcoming 75th birthday.
With well wishers aplenty on track, 'Tommo' called home the first three winners on the card, his final race being the appropriately named It's A Photo – Big Fella EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
Sadly no photo but it's an exemplary final race call from @tommoracing! 👏
Best of luck in your retirement big fella! 🙌 pic.twitter.com/hFcxSJw2lY

The Marco Botti-trained Space Bear (100-30) was a decisive two-length winner in the hands of Luke Morris, but that did not stop Thompson having some fun inside the final furlong, as he said: 'Space Bear now takes it up, from Jowalla, coming from a long way back is Lyra Lea, but it's Space Bear whose going to win the It's A Photo – Big Fella European Breeders Fund Maiden Stakes!'
Ian Bartlett commentated on the final three races, but Thompson remained in the thick of the action and was on hand to present the connections of Ballsgrove Boy with their winner's prize following his success in the concluding Thanks For Everything Tommo – Happy Retirement Handicap.
Thompson told Sky Sports Racing: 'It has been absolutely incredible, I'm nearly shedding a tear. It's a ridiculous as I'm a tough cookie, but this is marvellous tonight.
'I've enjoyed it and people have come from all over to be here tonight. Normally after the last race people are rushing off to their cars but we'd had thousands here, it's superb.'
On his final call, he added: 'I'll never ever forget it. I'm quite moved and it's difficult to concentrate as I'm not working any more – I'm talking into the microphone, but I'm not holding it.'
Thompson remains one of the most recognisable figures in the racing industry having spent time commentating on-course and for BBC radio, while also presenting for ITV, Channel 4, At The Races and Sky Sports Racing during a nearly 60-year broadcasting career.
He was even part of a three-strong party alongside Lord Oaksey and The Sun's Peter Campling that attempted to negotiate the release of Shergar after the 1981 Derby winner was kidnapped.
And while his long spell commentating in Britain has come to an end, Thompson has no intention of hanging up his microphone entirely, with several racecourses continuing to use him as a raceday presenter, while he will also continue his association with racing in Jersey.
He said: 'I've got Ascot at lunchtime on Friday and then York on Friday evening, Ascot on Saturday and then go to Jersey on Saturday night/Sunday.
'I am going to settle down a bit and enjoy. I am going to miss the commentary because the commentary box is the best view and the best seat in the house.'
Speaking to Sky Sports Racing presenter Simon Mapletoft, Thompson signed off perfectly with: 'I've had a great career. Thanks big fella and by the way, it's a photo!'

Birmingham City lead loan race for Premier League defender in latest transfer coup

EXCLUSIVE: Birmingham have already wrapped up some eye-catching signings ahead of their return to the Championship this coming season and are now close to another transfer coup Birmingham City are leading a host of Championship clubs in the race to snap up Eiran Cashin on loan as the Blues close in on yet another transfer coup. ‌ Cashin, 23, joined Brighton back in the January transfer window after coming through the ranks at Derby County and has had no shortage of suitors among second-tier clubs after being given the green light to continue his development out on loan. ‌ Mirror Football understands that Birmingham have now emerged as the favourites to sign the sought-after defender for the 2025-26 campaign. ‌ Cashin would be the latest eye-catching signing for the Blues, who are chasing a second successive promotion after winning the League One title last year. The Republic of Ireland youth international is held in high regard by Brighton, who paid a significant sum to bring him to the south coast earlier this year after a lengthy pursuit spanning almost two years. He made two substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Seagulls after leaving Derby mid-season but is now poised to return to the Championship to play a part in Birmingham's bid to clinch successive promotions. ‌ The Blues have already significantly strengthened the squad which romped to the League One title last year with a record points tally. The likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Tommy Doyle and Demarai Gray have all signed on for Birmingham's return to the Championship with more additions expected before the summer transfer window shuts on 1 September. ‌ Cashin made 144 appearances in total for Derby before moving to the Premier League, scoring six goals. The Rams academy graduate was also named in the 2023-24 League One team of the season following his performances in Derby's promotion winning season. Love Island's Harrison makes huge Lauren relationship bombshell after villa exit

EXCLUSIVE: Love Island's Harrison Solomon and Lauren Wood speak in their first joint interview as Harrison makes a huge life-changing decision days after leaving the ITV2 show Love Island star Harrison Solomon has revealed he won't be returning to America after finding love with Lauren Wood — just days after walking out of the villa in an emotional bombshell exit. ‌ In their first joint exclusive chat with The Mirror, the 22-year-old, who previously lived in the US, said the decision to stay in the UK was easy after the whirlwind of fame, controversy, and romance that followed his time on the ITV2 show. ‌ 'As it stands, I'm not going back to America,' Harrison confirmed. 'Coming off Love Island, I want to be around people who love and support me — my family, my friends… and Lauren.' ‌ The couple, who were brought together during the infamous Casa Amor twist, have been inseparable ever since. Lauren, 26, entered the villa halfway through the summer series, instantly catching Harrison's eye despite him being coupled up with original islander Toni. And while the Derby lad's journey was anything but smooth — involving late-night tears, public backlash, and emotional goodbyes — he insists he has no regrets. When Harrison first entered the villa as a bombshell almost 5 weeks ago, viewers weren't quite sure what to make of him. Charming, flirty, and confident, he quickly coupled up with Toni, and the pair looked like a solid match — at first. ‌ But everything changed when Casa Amor hit, and Lauren strutted into the picture. 'I knew I was going in for Harrison,' Lauren admits. 'He's 100% my type. As cringe as it sounds, he's my type to a T. But I didn't expect the connection to be so instant.' Harrison echoed the sentiment. 'As soon as I saw her, I got this giddy feeling. I fancied her straight away, and the more we talked, the more we realised how much we had in common. It just flowed.' Their chemistry was undeniable — but it came at a cost. Harrison's decision to bring Lauren back to the main villa shocked the group, especially Toni, who was left single and blindsided. What followed was a tense recoupling, a teary confrontation, and one of the most emotional exits of the season so far. ‌ 'Trying to navigate getting to know two people at once — there's no handbook for that,' Harrison admits. 'I definitely didn't go about things the right way, and I hurt people along the way. But it was never malicious.' After Lauren was dumped from the island, Harrison shocked everyone by voluntarily leaving the villa 24 hours later to be with her on the outside. ‌ 'People said I shouldn't leave, but I knew I had to. That day without her made me realise what I wanted,' he said. 'It wasn't a good 24 hours. I just sat and reflected. I went in to find something real, and I knew that was Lauren.' Since leaving the show, the couple have been adjusting to life in the real world — but without the 24/7 cameras. 'We've been on proper dates, shopping in London, and just enjoying time together,' Lauren shared. 'It's nice just being us, not 'Harrison and Lauren from Love Island.'' The pair have already spoken to each other's families over FaceTime and say meeting in person is on the cards soon. 'She spoke to my whole family. We'll get to boyfriend and girlfriend status in the near future,' Harrison teased. 'She wants me to pop the question now.' ‌ Their first official date? 'Harry's just outside Harrods,' he revealed. 'We planned it while in the villa, so we knew exactly what we wanted to do when we got out.' But it hasn't all been sunshine and selfies. Harrison faced backlash after Women's Aid raised concerns about 'misogynistic behaviour' during his time on the show, particularly relating to how he navigated his connections with Toni and Lauren. 'It was hard to see,' he said of the articles. 'I don't believe those labels reflect who I am at all. I've definitely made mistakes, but none of it came from a bad place. Everyone close to me — even Toni — knows that.' ‌ In one of his final villa scenes, Harrison got visibly emotional during a heartfelt chat with Toni, apologising for how things ended. 'She told me I wasn't a bad person, just that I went about things the wrong way,' he said. 'That meant a lot. I needed that conversation.' While the show aired just one hour a day, both Harrison and Lauren insist that their connection was deeper than what viewers may have seen. ‌ 'People think it was all PDA, but it wasn't,' Lauren said. 'We were genuinely getting to know each other. We were glued to each other's sides every day.' Harrison agreed: 'We had proper chats, laughs, and just clicked on every level. That's why I left.' With their relationship going strong, the couple are taking things slow — but seriously. 'There's no pressure,' said Harrison. 'We're just enjoying this chapter and taking it day by day.' And what about watching the show back? 'Not yet,' Lauren laughed. 'We've seen TikToks and little clips, but we'll probably binge it in a few months when we've got time.' Looking back, Harrison says the toughest part wasn't the drama — it was hurting people unintentionally. 'I cared about both girls at one point, and I know my indecision caused pain. That's what I regret the most.' But he also knows he's come out of it with something real. 'I left Love Island with what I went in for. That's all I could've asked for.'
