Meta's Llama AI Team Suffers Talent Exodus As Top Researchers Join $2B Mistral AI, Backed By Andreessen Horowitz And Salesforce
, a Paris-based startup founded by former Meta (NASDAQ:META) researchers Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, is rapidly emerging as a key player in the open-source AI space, and it's doing so with Meta's top talent.
The tech giant is contending with a major loss of talent within its AI division as the architects behind its flagship Llama models exit the company. According to Business Insider, only three of the 14 researchers credited on the 2023 Llama paper remain employed at Meta.
Five of the Llama paper's co-authors have joined Mistral in the past 18 months, intensifying scrutiny around Meta's ability to retain top-tier AI personnel, Business Insider reports.

Backed by $2 billion in funding, Mistral AI is rapidly gaining ground as one of the most aggressive challengers in the open-source AI space. As reported by TechCrunch, the company is supported by premier venture firms including Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Salesforce (NYSE:CRM), all known for placing high-stakes bets on transformative technologies. Other notable backers include Bpifrance, Xavier Niel, Eric Schmidt, General Catalyst, and BNP Paribas, reflecting deep institutional and individual confidence in Mistral's long-term vision.
Founded in 2023, Mistral is building advanced open-weight AI models that directly compete with Meta's Llama family. Its approach appeals to developers seeking transparency and customization in contrast to the closed nature of proprietary systems. With former Meta researchers such as Marie-Anne Lachaux, Thibaut Lavril, and Baptiste Rozière now working alongside Mistral's founders, the company may lead the next wave of open-source innovation, Business Insider reports.

Meta's previous dominance in this space was largely defined by its decision to release Llama models with open access to their architecture and training data. According to Business Insider, that move helped validate open-weight large language models as viable alternatives to proprietary giants like OpenAI and Google. But with the original architects of Llama now working elsewhere, Meta's early lead is under pressure.
Meta's internal AI leadership is undergoing a shift as well. In April, longtime executive Joelle Pineau stepped away from her role leading the Fundamental AI Research group after eight years. Taking over the position is Robert Fergus, a FAIR co-founder and former DeepMind scientist, marking a return to Meta following a five-year stint at Google's AI lab, Business Insider says.
Separately, The Wall Street Journal reported that Meta's largest AI model to date, dubbed Behemoth, has been delayed due to internal concerns over performance and direction. Meanwhile, Business Insider notes that developers are increasingly turning to faster-evolving alternatives such as Qwen and DeepSeek following the Llama 4 release.Despite investing billions into AI infrastructure, Meta still lacks a model explicitly focused on reasoning tasks, such as multi-step problem-solving or tool use. According to Business Insider, competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic are moving quickly to prioritize those capabilities, and without that strategic leap, Meta's influence over the open-source ecosystem may continue to decline.
Of the 11 researchers who left Meta since the Llama paper's publication, most had been with the company for more than five years, according to LinkedIn profiles reviewed by Business Insider. Some departed as recently as February. Their exits mark a significant shift in Meta's AI capabilities and raise questions about the company's ability to maintain its leadership in the field.

Toyota's Smallest Car Gets the GR Sport Treatment
The funky Aygo X is the smallest model Toyota sells outside of Japan's kei car segment. It's a diminutive vehicle competing in Europe's rarefied A-segment, especially after the exit of the Volkswagen Group's trio (VW up!, Skoda Citigo, and SEAT Mii) a few years ago. Previously a traditional hatchback, the Aygo X adopted crossover styling cues with the launch of its latest generation in 2022. A mid-cycle refresh now brings substantial changes. Not many may recall, but the Aygo X was once available with a five-speed manual gearbox. Well, that's no longer the case. The facelifted version is now automatic-only and features a new engine. The naturally aspirated 1.0-liter unit has been replaced by a larger 1.5-liter powertrain sourced from the Yaris supermini. It produces 114 hp, which, although nothing to write home about, is still a healthy 43-hp increase over its predecessor. Photo by: Toyota This power bump has dramatically improved performance, reducing the 0–62 mph (100 km/h) time from a sluggish 14.9 seconds to just under 10 seconds. Toyota is also electrifying the Aygo X, making it the only full hybrid in its class. Emissions are impressively low at just 86 grams of CO₂ per kilometer, the best figure among non-plug-in vehicles. Fuel consumption is rated at only 3.8 liters per 100 km, which translates to roughly 61.6 miles per gallon. To accommodate the hybrid bits, the front overhang has been extended by 76 millimeters (nearly 3 inches). Given the Aygo X's compact length of just 3.7 meters (145.7 inches), engineers had to innovate with the battery packaging. For the first time in a Toyota, two stacks of battery cells are installed side by side across the floor beneath the rear seats. This longitudinal layout contrasts with the parallel configuration found in larger vehicles, which have more space to spare. These mechanical upgrades are accompanied by design tweaks, including a new grille, updated headlights, and a revised hood. For the first time, the Aygo X is available in a GR Sport trim. Photo by: Toyota Despite the addition of hybrid hardware and the relocation of the auxiliary battery beneath the cargo floor, luggage capacity remains unchanged at 231 liters (8.15 cubic feet). Elsewhere, Toyota has added more soundproofing for a quieter ride, with higher trims also benefiting from thicker window glass. And yes, the rear doors' windows still pop out. The analog instrument cluster has been replaced with a seven-inch digital display, and an electronic parking brake is now standard. Although it's Toyota's smallest car, the Aygo X comes well-equipped, offering features such as a wireless smartphone charger, power-folding mirrors, and Panasonic's nanoeX air purification system. Additional highlights include dual USB-C ports, over-the-air updates, and a comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistance features. The updated Aygo X will go on sale in Europe later this year. As Toyota's most affordable offering on the continent, it has sold over 287,000 units since its debut three years ago. Trump's 20th week in office to include White House meeting with European leader, expected call with Xi
President Donald Trump's 20th week in the Oval Office is expected to include a White House meeting with Germany's chancellor, a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping and lawmakers' ongoing efforts to pass the "big, beautiful bill" to fund the president's agenda. Monday marks Trump's 134th day in the White House, a period in which he has issued 150 executive orders affecting domestic policies, unveiled sweeping plans to rectify the nation's trade deficit with foreign nations and held ongoing negotiations to end international wars. The week is slated to include a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House as war continues to rage between Ukraine and Russia and trade negotiations with the U.S. hang over Germany. Merz's office confirmed on Saturday that the chancellor will travel to Washington on Wednesday evening ahead of meeting Trump on Thursday, Politico reported. The two are slated to discuss the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and trade policies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Merz in Germany last week as the two European leaders ironed out an agreement for Germany to bolster its backing of Ukraine. The meeting on Thursday will be followed by a lunch and press conference, according to Bloomberg. Merz and Trump have previously spoken by phone but have not met face-to-face since Merz was elected Germany's leader in May. Merz clashed with Trump officials last month when Germany designated its right-wing Alternative for Germany political party a "proven right-wing extremist organization." "Germany just gave its spy agency new powers to surveil the opposition. That's not democracy–it's tyranny in disguise," Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted to X of the designation. "What is truly extremist is not the popular AfD–which took second in the recent election – but rather the establishment's deadly open border immigration policies that the AfD opposes." "Banning the centrist AfD, Germany's most popular party, would be an extreme attack on democracy," former Department of Government Efficiency chief Elon Musk posted to X, the social media platform that he owns. Merz responded that American leaders should not weigh in on German elections and politics. "We have largely stayed out of the American election campaign in recent years, and that includes me personally," Merz said, according to Politico. "We have not taken sides with either candidate. And I ask you to accept that in return," he added. Trump is expected to hold a phone call with China's Xi Jinping this week to discuss tariffs, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett revealed on Sunday. "President Trump, we expect, is going to have a wonderful conversation about the trade negotiations this week with President Xi. That's our expectation," Hassett said Sunday during an interview on ABC News' "This Week." A day for the phone call has not yet been locked down, according to Hassett. "You never know in international relations, but my expectation is that both sides have expressed a willingness to talk," Hassett said. "And I'd like to also add that people are talking every day, so [U.S. Trade Representative] Jamieson Greer, his team and President Xi's team in China, they're talking every day trying to move the ball forward on this matter." The Trump administration leveled tariffs as high as 145% on Chinese goods following the president's reciprocal tariff plans in April, when China retaliated against the U.S. with tariffs of their own. China and the U.S. reached a preliminary trade agreement last month, which Trump said China violated in a Truth Social post on Friday. "I made a FAST DEAL with China in order to save them from what I thought was going to be a very bad situation, and I didn't want to see that happen. Because of this deal, everything quickly stabilized and China got back to business as usual. Everybody was happy! That is the good news!!! The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US. So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!" he wrote. Senate lawmakers are working to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which is a multitrillion-dollar piece of legislation that advances Trump's agenda on taxes, immigration, energy, defense and the national debt. House lawmakers passed the legislation last month by one vote after a handful of Republican lawmakers held out on supporting the legislation, saying it would exacerbate the nation's debt. A handful of Republican senators have made similar remarks to their House counterparts, explaining they cannot support the legislation unless it addresses its impact on the nation's debt. The bill is expected to add roughly $3 trillion to the national debt, Fox News Digital previously reported. "I'm a 'no' unless we separate out the debt ceiling," Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said last week. "If you take the debt ceiling off the bill, I'm pretty much a 'yes' on most of the rest." "If we follow the path of the House bill, we'll have close to, I think, $60 trillion worth of debt in 10 years. What we've got to do is do what every family does: We've got to go through every line of the budget," Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida said during an interview on Fox News on Thursday. Republican South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California on Friday that the Senate must pass the legislation or American families will pay higher taxes. "We don't have a choice. We have to pass the bill to get the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act back in place on a permanent basis," he said. "If we don't do that, the average American family is going to see about a $2,400-a-year increase in their taxes. So we have to do something. And it's critical that we pass this bill. We're going to work with the House. We're going to get this deal done. The Senate will put their mark of approval on it, but nonetheless, we want to do everything we can as quickly as we can to take care of this so that we can get on to other things. The president has made it very clear he wants to get this done. We want to help in that regard. This is our job." Trump has repeatedly called on lawmakers to unify and pass the legislation, saying that it is "arguably the most significant piece of legislation that will ever be signed in the history of our country."
