Seven tips to be better at Call of Duty Black Ops 6

The Guardian14-11-2024

Let me guess: you recently bought Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, strayed into the multiplayer mode and now you're being mercilessly pummelled by hundreds of teenagers with suggestive usernames? Don't worry, that's perfectly normal. Call of Duty has always been the arcade twitchfest of the online shooter scene, but Black Ops 6 has a whole new feel thanks to its omni-movement system, which lets you dive, roll and sprint in every direction. And the weapons have all been completely redesigned. It is, as Olivia Rodrigo put it, brutal out there.
So I asked two excellent pro players – Ethan 'Fifakill' Pink and Liam 'Jukeyz' James – for their tips. Instead of laughing and pointing at me, they agreed.
If you're just getting into CoD, stick with the assault rifles or submachine guns [SMGs] – they suit the smaller maps and intense engagement speed in Black Ops 6. 'My favourite assault rifle [AR] is probably the Model L, although it's so good professionals have agreed not to use it – they've moved to the AMES,' says Jukeyz. 'The SMG would be the Jackal which feels fun to use, or the KSV which is harder, but pretty over-powered'.
Meanwhile Fifakill recommends the Kompakt 92. 'It has a super high fire rate and very good movement speed, you can absolutely destroy with it. But if you're more of a mid-range player, I'd say the Model L assault rifle is a really good option. It will take a while to unlock, but it's worth the effort – super TTK [time to kill] and very low recoil.'
Gunsmith is where you can add modifications to your weapon, and it's vital for giving you the edge in encounters. 'For the majority of players, it's best to start by reducing recoil,' says Fifakill. 'Focus on attachments that reduce horizontal recoil – if the gun is bouncing up or down it's pretty simple to correct. But with left and right, while you're trying to track an enemy player, that's more difficult.' Jukeyz prioritises aim-down sight speed (how quickly you can get the gun into an aiming position), but also suggests attaching a vertical foregrip to counter recoil. 'I'd also suggest the Gunfighter wildcard,' adds Fifakill. 'It gives you eight attachments per gun, so you can have it all: better movement, a bigger mag and less recoil.'
Black Ops 6 allows you to choose from 20 perks which give you buffs in specific areas. They're split into three categories – Enforcer (red), Recon (blue) and Strategist (green) – and if you pick three from the same type you get a bonus speciality perk. 'I've been running the red perks because that gives you a super speed bonus and you get extra health re-gen after you make a kill – it really benefits you if you're trying to run and gun,' says Fifakill.
'If you're trying to push for kills run three red perks: I like Gung Ho, Assassin and Double Time. If you're a slower player I'd go for blue perks and the speciality for that is useful. And if you're an objective player then run the three green perks.'
Jukeyz favours Dexterity, Assassin and then Double Time: 'And because they're all red, it gives you the Enforcer speciality, which means killing enemies gets you a temp buff to movement speed and health re-gen. It's perfect for ARs or SMGs.'
Earning experience points [XP] unlocks new items and scorestreaks so levelling up fast is a good idea. 'Use BankRoll as perk three,' suggests Jukeyz. 'Once you're getting double or triple kills, you'll unlock UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), Counter UAV and HARP (High-Altitude Reconnaissance Plane) a lot quicker. If you have all three activated at once, you get so much Assist XP from teammates using them all over the map. It's constant XP.'
Stop playing on the giant OLED television in your living room: the response time will be slower than a dedicated monitor and it's hard to see everything on the screen while also checking your minimap and ammo count. Both our pros use a 27-inch monitor, with a 1440p resolution and at least 144Hz refresh rate. Also, switch from speakers to a headset. 'I use JBLs,' says Fifakill. 'But as long as you have a headset that has decent spatial audio you should be fine, and there are in-game settings you can tweak, for example, enabling Dolby Atmos which will help you to hear where footsteps are coming from.'
Call of Duty multiplayer is a team game, so you need to think tactically even when you're with a bunch of strangers. 'If you really want to win an Objective mode (a multiplayer mode such as Control or Hardpoint which has a specific goal) on a public server, focus on spawn points,' says Fifakill. 'It's about going ahead to a new area where you know an objective is going to be and try to lock down the spawn point at that position for your team. It's not the most glamorous role, but it's useful. It means when the objective arrives, your team is going to be spawning close by, so you can get reinforcements a lot faster.'
Jukeyz recommends a more social approach. 'A bit of communication is a good start,' he says. 'Who's watching what, who's taking the hard point. Get friends to play with you, or start chatting to people you meet in public servers who you think are good. Get a bit of structure with your gameplay – even shouting 'left' or 'right' (to indicate threats or where to run), is a start.'
Fifakill reckons he spends 70% of a match watching the minimap, which becomes a lot more viable once you've learned the maps inside out. Watch for red markers which show the position of rival players and enemy fire; watch where your teammates are running, listen out for anything they 'ping' (mark on the map). Or as Jukeyz puts it: 'pay attention to everything'.

Call Of Duty Black Ops 7 reveals story details but not Nintendo Switch 2 version

The Xbox Games Showcase has unveiled this year's new Call Of Duty game and as rumoured it's a direct sequel to 2012's Black Ops 2. Last year the big showcase reveal for Xbox, that got half an hour all to itself at the end of the main livestream, was Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6. This year It's The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded 2 that was given the slot, but that didn't mean that this year's Call Of Duty wasn't announced anyway. That implies that from now on each year's new game will probably always get unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase, although the reveal for Black Ops 7 was mostly just a pre-rendered trailer and for most of the time it wasn't obvious it was Call Of Duty at all. The fact that this year's game is Black Ops 7 was leaked some time ago (as was next year's game) with insiders suggesting that it's a direct sequel to 2012's Black Ops 2. Activision has now confirmed that, with the trailer showing that you're playing as David Mason from that game, with villain Raul Menendez also making a return. Black Ops 2 was set in both the 1980s and 2025 (which was the near future at the time) but Black Ops 7 takes place in 2035, which is 40 years after the events of last year's game. It's not entirely clear what's going on with the plot but apparently you, as David Mason, are fighting 'a manipulative enemy who weaponises fear above all else.' Black Ops 2's plot revolved around deadly cyberattacks, which has only become more relevant as time has gone on. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. There's very little concrete information on the gameplay, with a full reveal promised for later this summer. However, it's confirmed that the story mode will feature campaign co-op and that there'll be a lot of 'near future weaponry' and brand new maps in 'a signature multiplayer experience'. A new round-based version of Zombies will also be included, continuing the Dark Aether storyline – which means little hope of a revamp for the mode this year. More Trending There's no real explanation for why we're getting two Black Ops games in a row, other than it's being developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, who also made Black Ops 6. Usually, Activision's developers take it in turns, so the real rarity here is the same studio releasing any game back-to-back. What's also interesting is that there's no sign of a Nintendo Switch 2 version. Not that fans have ever been desperate for one, but Microsoft made a big fuss about bringing Call Of Duty back to Nintendo formats, when making their argument as to why thy should be allowed to buy Activision Blizzard. Thus far though, they haven't announced anything for the new format, with Black Ops 7 only confirmed for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. There's no release date but new Call Of Duty games are usually released around late October. Since Activision do now belong to Microsoft, the game will be available day one on Game Pass. Olivia Rodrigo, 22, brings rock legend, 73, on stage at Gov Ball... but 'not a single kid there knew him'

Oliva Rodrigo brought out a special guest during her performance at 2025 Governors Ball Music Festival on Saturday night, but some of her fans were scratching their heads as to who it was. The singer, who was seen glammed up last week at an appearance for Lancôme in Manhattan, New York, invited none other than David Byrne from Talking Heads to sing with her. The two came together for a rocking rendition of one of Talking Heads' biggest hits, 1983's Burning Down the House, during the set at Flushing Meadows - Corona Park in Queens, NY. Byrne, 73, wore red overalls and a white T-shirt to coordinate with Rodrigo's sparkling red bra top and brief bottoms. The pair choreographed the performance with some simple dance moves that Talking Heads fans would recognize right away. While some were blown away by the collaboration, many of Rodrigo's fans seemed to have no idea about the Byrne's stature in the music community. 'What I imagine dancing in my underwear with my dad would be like,' was one comment. 'As millennial, this is before and after my time,' wrote a follower. 'Bet many of her fans said who's that old man she invited on stage,' joked one fan on Billboard's Instagram page. 'Much respect to her because 90% of her demographic is 100% confused by this,' one person commented on the Pop Base page on X. Another added, 'If you don't know who David Byrne is, you don't get to have an opinion.' 'Can't hate on someone trying to open up a whole new generation's ears to some great music,' agreed another. 'Yeah unfortunately I can see how Olivia's usual crowd doesn't quite understand the moment but it's still awesome nonetheless,' said one commenter on the Fauxmoi page on Reddit, which also shared a video clip of the performance. Another Reddit commenter praised Rodrigo for introducing her fans to other members of the music community. In the past she has collaborated with Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Jewel, Natalie Imbruglia and Avril Lavigne. While some were blown away by the collaboration, many of Rodrigo's fans seemed to have no idea about the Byrne's stature in the music community Music fans not familiar with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members can learn more about them in the 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense. The movie was re-released in 2023,which is available of various streaming services. On June 5, the band released the very first video for their 1977 hit Psycho Killer starring Saoirse Ronan. 'Made in celebration of 50th anniversary of the band's first show at CBGB's, the video follows a young woman unraveling while stuck in her daily routine. It's a disquieting portrait of isolation that echoes the tension at the heart of the iconic song,' the band wrote on their Instagram page to debut the short film. Rodrigo is still traveling on her Guts World Tour. Her next stop will be Dublin, Ireland on June 24.

Call of Duty 2026 has been announced and it's back-to-back Black Ops

For the first time in the history of the Call of Duty series, we'll be getting two consecutive entries in a sub-series, as Black Ops 7 has been announced for release in 2026 In a groundbreaking move for the Call of Duty franchise, Activision has revealed that for the first time, we'll see back-to-back annual releases of Black Ops. Activision has unveiled its plans for Call of Duty 2026, and to everyone's astonishment, it's Black Ops 7. The publisher usually rotates its studios between different series – with Black Ops and Modern Warfare being the focus for the past few years alongside Warzone battle royale – and typically releases them every other year. ‌ Despite last year's release being Black Ops 6, which would normally mean a hiatus until 2027, Activision has decided to buck the trend. ‌ The announcement of Black Ops 7 was made at SGF 2025 during the Xbox Games Showcase, and this time around, the game is set to catapult players into the future, specifically to the year 2035, which is 40 years on from the events of Black Ops 6. It's been quite some time since gamers have had the chance to engage with futuristic warfare technology; the last occasions were in Black Ops 3 and Black Ops 4, set in 2065 and the 2040s respectively. In a press statement detailing the backdrop of Black Ops 7, Activision stated, "The year is 2035 and the world is on the brink of chaos, ravaged by violent conflict and psychological warfare following the events of Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6. Wielding cutting-edge technology, David Mason and his team must fight back against a manipulative enemy who weaponizes fear above all else." Regarding the successive Black Ops releases, Call of Duty general manager Matt Cox said, "The Black Ops universe is amazing. The creativity and imagination that goes into the storytelling, the rich character depth, and the incredible moment-to-moment gameplay across all modes is really exceptional. As a team, our vision from the start was to create a back-to-back series experience for our players that embraced the uniqueness of the Black Ops sub-franchise." Tyler Bahl, head of Activision publishing marketing, also chimed in adding, "Delivering consecutive Black Ops games also allows our teams the tremendous opportunity to tap not only into our own creativity but also embrace the shift from a '90s setting to the new 2035 future setting within our marketing. "Today is only the beginning with this first teaser. The full reveal of Black Ops 7 is coming later this summer, so the community should be on the lookout for teases, clues and the surprises that the Black Ops series is known for. It's an exciting time as we prepare for a new Call of Duty reveal, and the next great experience to come." Black Ops 7 is slated for release on both current and previous generation consoles later this year and will debut as a day one Xbox Game Pass title.
