Bo-Vine raises the steaks in Cape Town

Time Out09-05-2025

For a city that's never short on good food, the menu of meaty options in central Cape Town has a new entry that's well worth a visit.
In the space once home to the much-loved Savoy Cabbage, Bo-Vine in the City is the urban twin to the ever-popular Bo-Vine steakhouse in Camps Bay, a popular fixture on the seaside strip.
At Heritage Square Bo-Vine brings a big-city contemporary elegance that's evident from the moment you're greeted at the door by the maître d'. Exposed brick walls hint at the centuries of history, while steel staircases and Bo-Vine's signature graffiti style of decor deliver a hit of contemporary cool.
While it's a large restaurant, the tables are spread across the ground floor, a side room, and a mezzanine, so it never feels too busy. There's a choice of seating options on offer, but I've never met a banquette I didn't like. Happily, at Bo-Vine, there's plenty of choice, from cosy nooks to long rows of tables ideal for people-watching. And judging by the clientele in the week leading up to the Jazz Festival, this is a place to see and be seen as much as it is to dine.
Bo-Vine takes their meat seriously, and while we ease into the evening over cocktails – Old Fashioned, perhaps a touch sweet; and an excellent Negroni – our waiter comes by to showcase what's on offer. Vegetarians, look away now, as you'll be presented with a wooden board of the day's cuts: hefty tomahawk, marbled wagyu, and sizeable T-bones, among others. And the waiters here are on point when it comes to the menu, so expect a mini-masterclass in all things steak, whether it's grain-fed versus grass, or wet aging versus dry.
It's an extensive menu, with starters that include steakhouse classics – steak tartare, garlic mussels, and an excellent carpaccio – alongside a wide range of mostly meaty main courses. The peri-peri chicken, pressed lamb belly, and pork ribs all tempted. But, when in Rome, right? This is a steakhouse, so a steak it had to be. Rib-eye is my cut of choice, and here it was grilled – medium-rare – perfectly. Chips on the side, onion rings too because, well, why not, and a marrow bone for good measure. Cholesterol tests be damned.
While beef is the headline act, Bo-Vine in the City also caters to pescatarians and plant-based diners with a handful of options that don't feel like afterthoughts. But, it's clearly not the real reason to come here. Desserts play to the classics, and while the chocolate fondant was exceptional, the Crème Brûlée missed the mark, with an overly set custard, piping hot bowl, and sugar not quite caramelised.
As you might have guessed from the play on words in the name, Bo-Vine is as much about the beef as it is about wine. So alongside the compact collection of cocktails, you'll find a well-chosen wine list that doesn't rely on big-name brands for interest. Instead, you might be tempted by a Swartland Grenache or a cool-climate Syrah. Not sure where to start? The menu helpfully lists suggested wine pairings for each course.
Set to become a Bree Street staple, Bo-Vine is open daily for lunch and dinner, making it the perfect destination for everything from a corporate lunch to date night.

Take a bath under the stars at five-star Highlands hotel opens luxury cottage

The Torridon has launched Chestnut Cottage, a luxurious new retreat with loch views, a stargazing bath, and a cosy log burner The UK's most northerly five-star hotel has unveiled a luxury cottage offering guests unrivalled lochside views and the chance to stargaze while soaking in a warm bath. The Torridon's newest gem, Chestnut Cottage, is positioned as the estate's most exclusive offering. The newly-refurbished private retreat perfectly blends luxury with a warm, homely feel, capturing the essence of heritage, elegance, and comfort in the heart of the Highlands. ‌ Guests at Chestnut Cottage can indulge in an outdoor bath under some of the darkest and clearest skies in the UK, enjoy direct access to Upper Loch Torridon, and unwind by a cosy log burner that invites quiet moments with a good book. ‌ Inside, the walls are adorned with wallpaper by renowned British designer GP&J Baker, featuring herons and lilies that bring the beauty of the outdoors inside, fully immersing visitors in the stunning Wester Ross landscape. The cottage's style marries traditional Victorian touches, like a bespoke wardrobe crafted by Scottish artisan Danny Rusling, with contemporary elements, including a modern mulberry stripe placed horizontally for a fresh twist. Bold colours, plush velvets and vivid patterns create a tranquil yet energising atmosphere, designed to lift the spirits. ‌ Rohaise Rose-Bristow, co-owner and creative visionary behind Chestnut Cottage, explained the inspiration behind the space, saying: 'We wanted to create a space where guests feel inspired by the luxury touches, but comfortable enough to kick off your muddy boots.' She added: 'It's the perfect spot for guests to escape and to switch off from the world for a while, to recharge and leave feeling a little bit happier.' ‌ Rohaise and her husband, Dan Rose-Bristow, took ownership of The Torridon in 1998, with Rohaise blending original Victorian charm with her own modern design flair to transform the hotel into the unique sanctuary it is today. Nestled within 58 acres of private parkland at the foot of dramatic mountains and overlooking a shimmering sea loch, The Torridon is one of the UK's most celebrated luxury retreats. ‌ The estate boasts fine dining at its flagship restaurant 1887 and the Bo & Muc Brasserie, headed by acclaimed Chef Danny Young. Guests can also explore the whisky bar, offering 356 different blends, or take part in a wide range of outdoor activities from loch snorkelling and kayaking to hiking and clay pigeon shooting. The Torridon's grandeur echoes its history as a hunting lodge built in the 1860s by William King-Noel, the first Earl of Lovelace, and completed in 1887. ‌ The Earl is notable for marrying Ada Lovelace, Lord Byron's only legitimate daughter, who was a pioneering poetical scientist. According to The Torridon's website, the estate represents the kind of Scottish holiday home favoured by English nobility after Queen Victoria made the Highlands respectable once again. ‌ Today, Dan and Rohaise Rose-Bristow, who inherited the property from Rohaise's parents, have meticulously restored and reimagined The Torridon into a boutique hotel that honours its surroundings. The award winning hotel features 18 uniquely styled rooms and suites in the main building, plus 12 more in the Stables and The Boathouse for private getaways. Dining options highlight seasonal and traditional Scottish flavours, while outdoor adventures range from guided tours of lochs and glens to stargazing, sea kayaking, mountain biking, gorge scrambling and archery. Room rates start from £635, offering guests a luxurious Highland escape steeped in history, comfort and natural beauty.

Ryan Reynolds' gin that took Wales by storm has 33% off on Amazon

Ryan Reynolds' gin fans say is 'best by far' now 33% cheaper on Amazon You can pick up a bottle of the gin that had fans 'instantly hooked' for a discount online Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have steered Wrexham to the Championship (Image:) Amazon shoppers can grab a bargain on the gin endorsed by Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds, which became immensely popular in Wales after his significant Wrexham AFC buyout. This celebrity-backed gin, sold as being "fantastic for cocktails" is now more affordable online compared to supermarket prices. Aviation American Gin was owned by the Wrexham AFC's Ryan Reynolds in 2016 but entered into Diageo's portfolio in 2020. Despite the acquisition, Reynolds continues to hold an "ongoing ownership interest" and acts as the face of the brand. ‌ Right now, it is included in the Amazon Essentials promotion as the gin offers a temporary discount. Shoppers usually pay £34 for a 70cl bottle but can now obtain it for £23, presenting a saving of nearly 33%. ‌ The "distinguished gin" is renowned for its unique blend of botanicals within each bottle. Predominantly juniper-flavoured, it also includes a mix of cardamom, coriander, French lavender, anise seed, sarsaparilla, and 'two kinds of orange peel'. Fans who purchased this spirit from Amazon have shared glowing endorsements. One shopper said: "Having tasted a number of gins over the year, this is by far the best that I have ever tasted. It's got a little kick to it and is slightly spiced. I have not tasted anything like this previously." Aviation American Gin promises to be 'fantastic for cocktails' - like a classic G&T or a Negroni (Image: Aviation American Gin | Facebook ) Article continues below Another added: "With all the various fruit-based gins flooding the market, it's reassuring to find a solid, no-nonsense, traditional dry gin that ticks all the boxes!" A third shared: "Absolutely gorgeous, it is such a fresh and smooth flavour!" While the lowest ratings didn't go below three stars, not every customer was happy with. One wrote that the gin "lacks flavour", claiming: "The botanicals are very weak and with a non-flavoured tonic the taste isn't nice at all. If you decide to try this, buy a flavoured tonic such as elderflower." Another shopper claimed: "It's a pretty average gin to be honest with quite a chemical taste. I usually drink Hendricks but thought I'd try something new, and with all the hype, thought I would give this a try, but it just isn't to my taste." ‌ Aviation American Gin is available online for cheaper than it is in the supermarkets (Image: Amazon | Aviation American Gin ) Shoppers who are fans of the drink might want to take advantage of the current Amazon deal. Its offer is more affordable than Morrisons, which lists the same bottle for £30. More shoppers had praise for the drink online. There is another shopper who shared: "After being caught up in Ryan Reynold's journey with Wrexham, I tried the gin and was instantly hooked. It isn't just Hollywood hype - it is a really good gin." ‌ A fifth reviewer commented: "I have tried expensive and overhyped gins that frankly do not have a patch on Aviation. Decently priced, good quality and great flavour." Please remember to drink responsibly: To lower the risk of harm to health when consuming alcohol, it's advised to follow guidelines provided by the NHS, which suggests enjoying no more than 14 units per week, distributed across at least three days.
