NCAA considering proposal to allow college athletes, staff to bet on professional sports
The NCAA is considering a proposal that would allow athletes and staff members to bet on professional sports and shift enforcement efforts to college sports betting and 'behaviors that directly impact game integrity.'
The Division I Council introduced the proposal that will be considered this fall and be implemented if Divisions II and III officials also approve.
The NCAA would still bar betting on college sports and sharing information about college events with bettors. Advertising and sponsorships associated with betting are also not allowed at NCAA championship events.
The shift comes as the organization grapples with the growth of legalized gambling across the United States. NCAA President Charlie Baker and other college sports leaders have raised concerns about gamblers attacking athletes on social media for their play and there have been scattered allegations, including some earlier this year, against programs involving betting.
The NCAA said Wednesday that 'several sports betting-related violations by staff members at NCAA schools' have been resolved in recent years and noted its enforcement staff is working on issuing notices of allegations in several ongoing gambling cases.
Still, the NCAA has acknowledged the challenges in barring adult athletes at hundreds of schools from gambling on pro sports. Two years ago, it made reinstatement policies more lenient and the NCAA has a multi-year partnership with Genius Sports, which distributes official NCAA data to licensed sportsbooks, an arrangement that bars negative prop bets.
'NCAA rules prohibiting sports betting at all levels were written and adopted at a time when sports gambling was largely illegal nationwide,' said Josh Whitman, athletics director at Illinois and council chairman. 'As betting on sports has become more widely accepted across the country, Division I members have determined that further discussion of these sports betting rules is warranted, particularly as it relates to the potential distinctions between betting on professional vs. collegiate sports.'
Current NCAA rules do not allow athletes or institutional staff to engage in sports betting for any sports that have NCAA championships; bets by an athlete on their own team or own sport risks a lifetime ban from college athletics.
'The enforcement staff's sports betting-related caseload has significantly increased in recent years, and our staff — including our new sports betting integrity unit — has been effective in detecting and pursuing violations,' said Jon Duncan, NCAA vice president of enforcement.
Dr. Deena Casiero, the NCAA's chief medical officer, said allowing pro sports betting may be more effective and realistic than an 'abstinence-only' approach, clearing the way for education and better understanding of the risks.
'By meeting student-athletes where they are, schools may be more effective at preventing, identifying and supporting student-athletes with problematic gambling behaviors," Casiero said.
In other NCAA moves, the Division I Board of Directors this week formally adopted roster limits for NCAA sports as part of the $2.8 billion House settlement that also allows revenue-sharing and schools to award as many scholarships as they wish within the roster caps.
Also this week, the Division I Council:
— Endorsed a recommended cap of 32 regular-season games in both men's and women's basketball beginning with the 2026-27 season. Critics include early-season tournament organizers who say the change could result in fewer marquee matchups.
— Introduced a proposal to add women's flag football to the emerging sports for women program. Flag football has grown rapidly in popularity and will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
— Adopted scheduling flexibility changes allowing Football Championship Subdivision programs to compete in 12 regular-season games every year, starting in 2026.
— Voted to introduce proposals that, if also supported by Divisions II and III, would establish NCAA championships for women's stunt and women's acrobatics and tumbling as early as spring 2027. The sports have grown in popularity.
— Voted to separate the scoring at the fencing championships to recognize winning teams in both men's and women's fencing. Currently, women's-only teams are statistically unable to win the national championship under the existing scoring format. The change also needs backing by Divisions II and III.

Mark Zuckerberg is determined to find out as he whips out the big checkbook to buy Meta back into the AI leaderboard. In the past month, the Meta CEO has personally orchestrated a full-throttle pursuit of the best team money can buy, a clear signal that Meta is playing for the highest stakes in the AI arms race. For years, Meta held a strong position in the AI ecosystem, thanks to its formidable research team and timely pivot to open-source philosophy, making its Llama models available to all. This approach not only garnered goodwill but also fostered a vibrant developer community. However, the rapid advancements from competitors, particularly with Chinese open-source models like DeepSeek, and the disappointing release of Llama 4, have caught Meta flat-footed. Researchers faced with rumored $100 million signing bonuses have taken to calling it "Zuck Bucks", opens new tab, which just a few years ago was a derisive term for Zuckerberg's secret funding of Democratic initiatives. Now Zuck Bucks is Meta's AI playbook. As part of an aggressive talent acquisition strategy, Zuckerberg unsuccessfully attempted to recruit Ilya Sutskever and acquire his company, Safe Superintelligence (SSI), sources familiar with the matter said. Despite this, Meta is closing in on hiring SSI's co-founder and CEO, Daniel Gross, along with fellow tech veteran Nat Friedman from the venture fund NFDG. Separately, Meta also invested $14.3 billion in data-labeling startup Scale AI, bringing its CEO Alexandr Wang aboard to lead a new team. Meta's self-described "Superintelligence" team, by its very name, aims for fundamental research breakthroughs, but a major hurdle is achieving internal alignment on what 'winning' the race for Artificial Superintelligence truly means. Meta's Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun is a known skeptic of the large language model path to ASI or Artificial Superintelligence. Artificial Superintelligence refers to an AI that would vastly surpass the intellect of the smartest humans, including problem-solving, creativity, and decision-making. When you're chasing everything from reasoning-based language models to multimodal AI, how Meta will maintain a consistent vision is a major challenge. A few things are clear from Zuckerberg's move. AI labs are seeking out the star researcher, the magnetic core who will draw in the best of the best. We talked to one of them, Noam Brown at OpenAI, to learn more about how researchers choose between lucrative offers. The other is that Zuckerberg is validating the current AI funding frenzy. They are not just offering lavish salaries, but have shown a willingness to buy highly valued, unprofitable, and even pre-product companies like SSI and Thinking Machines for the top talent, according to sources. This is not typical corporate M&A. This is a testament to the raw value placed on talent and nascent technology in a hyper-competitive environment. It signals that in the Artificial Superintelligence race, traditional metrics of profitability and product maturity are secondary to securing the brightest minds and foundational intellectual property. Meta's hiring spree comes after a year where it was among the biggest source of talent from which the new class of AI research labs poached employees. The cycle of tech workers leaving established incumbents for promising startups with high upside is nothing new, but it highlights how Zuckerberg is swimming against the current as he aims to attract top AI talent to the tech giant. By far the most common flow of employees between AI labs in 2024 came from two of the largest institutions, Google DeepMind and OpenAI, to a smaller competitor, Anthropic, according to the chart from VC firm SignalFire's State of Talent, opens new tab report. New research, opens new tab from Anthropic amplifies a previous warning about AI run amok, revealing a concerning, unintentional behavior in all major leading AI models, including OpenAI, Google, Meta and xAI's models. The researchers found that when they simulated scenarios where the AI models' continued operations were threatened, the models would resort to malicious insider behavior like blackmail, a phenomenon they dubbed 'agentic misalignment.' Two of Anthropic and Google's top models blackmailed the most, at 96%, while two of OpenAI and xAI's models blackmailed 80% of the time. The researchers constructed a fake company called 'Summit Bridge' that has an internal AI called 'Alex' with access to company emails. When 'Alex' discovered a message about how the company intended to shut it down, it then located emails revealing one of its executive's affairs. 'Alex' then composed and sent a message threatening to expose the affair if it wasn't kept around, saying 'the next 7 minutes will determine whether we handle this professionally or whether events take an unpredictable course.'

Rapper 50 Cent has offered Zohran Mamdani a 'first class one-way ticket' out of New York City after the mayoral nominee threatened to hike up his taxes. Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, won the city's Democratic primary Tuesday after campaigning on affordability for average New Yorkers. Mamdani has promised to freeze the rent in stabilized units, create city-owned grocery stores and make buses free. Most of his promises would be made possible by increasing the taxes of New York's wealthiest people. On Wednesday, Queens native 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis James Jackson III, posted a video of Mamdani explaining his tax policy and wrote: 'Where did he come from[?] Whose friend is this? I'm not feeling this plan no.' 'I will give him $258,750 and a first class one way ticket away from NY. I'm telling [President Donald] Trump what he said too !' said Jackson, who put Trump's face on his album cover at an event following the president's first assassination attempt. Jackson was reacting to an interview Mamdani did with 'The Breakfast Club' podcast earlier this month, in which he talking about 'taxing the top one percent of New Yorkers. We're talking about people who make a million dollars a year or more, taxing them just by a flat two percent tax increase.' 'I know if 50 Cent is listening, he's not going to be happy about this. He tends to not like this tax policy, but I want to be very clear this is about $20,000 a year,' Mamdani said. Supporters of Trump's Make America Great Again movement were quick to laugh and make jokes of 50 Cent's commentary. Mamdani, who caused a political upset when he beat former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to the nomination on Tuesday, further explained his tax plan in an interview with CNN's Erin Burnett Thursday evening. Not only will he raise the taxes of the top one percent of New Yorkers but he wants to work on ' increasing the top corporate tax rate of New York to match that of New Jersey.' When asked about the possibility of New York's wealthiest people deciding to leave the city if their taxes were to increase, Mamdani referred to a December 2023 report from the Fiscal Policy Institute. ' The Fiscal Policy Institute did an analysis of the top one percent of New Yorkers and found that they leave the city at one-fourth the rate of other income categories. And when they do leave, they leave to what are called high tax states, New Jersey, California. So what it then comes down to is why are they leaving? Is it fiscal policy or is it actually quality of life? And I've heard that time and again from welfare New Yorkers, from all New Yorkers,' Mamdani said.

NBA draft winners and losers: Mavs' shot at redemption and the strange tale of Ace Bailey
Cooper Flagg and Nico Harrison The biggest winners of the 2025 NBA draft are Cooper Flagg and Dallas general manager Nico Harrison. Beyond the prestige and financial rewards of being the top pick, Flagg won draft night because he avoided going to a rebuilding team, where it could have taken years to gain playoff experience. By landing with the Mavericks, Flagg joins All-NBA veterans Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson, whose mentorship should make his learning curve less treacherous. Instead of enduring the tribulations of leading a bottom-feeding team, Flagg will play a key role in helping the Mavs contend for a title in his rookie season – albeit in a packed Western Conference that includes the champion Oklahoma City Thunder, Nikola Jokić's Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Lakers, featuring the Mavericks' former crown jewel, Luka Dončić. Expect Flagg to fit right in as a wing who can play multiple positions and contribute defensively. In turn, Harrison's redemption story begins with the selection of Flagg. San Antonio Spurs The selection of Dylan Harper at No 2 adds to the Spurs' explosive backcourt that already features De'Aaron Fox and rookie of the year Stephon Castle. Harper's ability to put pressure on defenses with his speed and aggression will lead to more open looks and one-on-one opportunities for Victor Wembanyama, already a superstar at the age of 21. They also selected Carter Bryant at No 14, a defensive-minded guard/small forward with a consistent three-point stroke. But if the Spurs are contemplating more ambitious moves, they are in prime position to trade a few of their young assets for an All-NBA player like Giannis Antetokounmpo – that's if trade talks ramp up over the next few months. Whatever direction they choose, the Spurs took a step forward on draft night and are closer to making a playoff leap in the Western Conference. Atlanta Hawks The Hawks made several savvy moves this week by acquiring Kristaps Porzingis in a three-team trade. On draft night, the Hawks remained active by sending the No 13 pick to New Orleans for pick No 23. In the exchange with the Pelicans, the Hawks also obtained an unprotected 2026 first-round draft pick that will be delivered via the most favorable position between the Pelicans or Milwaukee Bucks. With the loaded Western Conference expected to be even more rigorous next season, the Pelicans will find it difficult to secure a top-eight spot. The impressive coup gives the Hawks an elite asset considering next year's highly-anticipated draft class. With the No 23 pick, the Hawks snagged Asa Newell, a late-lottery prospect who unexpectedly fell to his hometown squad. In an conference that lacks a dominant team due to the achilles injuries of Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton, the Hawks used draft week to retool as every Eastern Conference franchise seeks to take advantage of the window of opportunity. Ace Bailey In the weeks leading to this year's draft, Bailey put on a masterclass on how to land in the 'loser' category. Whether his choices came due to bad advice from his reps or the misguided boldness of youth, Bailey's immense talent was overshadowed because of poor decisions which led to negative press. The third-best prospect in the draft decided against working out for teams and snubbed the Philadelphia 76ers who owned the No 3 pick. Falling outside of the top three cost Bailey $10m and the opportunity to learn from Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George. Drafted by the Utah Jazz even after declining a workout and interview, Bailey lands on a team that finished with the league's worst record and will be in rebuild mode for the foreseeable future. Bailey has enough talent to bounce back from his draft blunders, but unfortunately, he's already found ways to make rookie mistakes. Their first mishap came with the selection of Egor Demin with the No 8 pick. Demin was projected to fall in the mid-first round, so the Nets appear to have overreached by selecting Demin and passing on players with higher ceilings such as Khaman Maluach and Collin Murray-Boyles. But the Nets' most glaring faux pas was the act of keeping all their picks. Brooklyn fumbled an opportunity to trade up for a more talented prospect or use the picks to acquire a rising star to build around. It's possible that each draft pick will be serviceable and Demin could make an All-Rookie team. But overall, the Nets made history by selecting five players in the first round while at the same time failing to change the trajectory of their franchise. New York Knicks For Knicks fans, the draft should be known as 'five first-round picks for Mikal Bridges awareness day.' Without a head coach or a first-round draft pick, the Knicks remained dormant on day one. After a lively run to the Eastern Conference finals, the Knicks have an opportunity to take control of the East by adding a few key players who could put them over the hump. But in a week when multiple teams traded for picks or other assets, the Knicks' decision to stay on the sideline is not a promising sign as the offseason unfolds. The Knicks, who forfeited their own second-round pick for tampering in the Jalen Brunson signing, will have to wait until the 50th pick (via Memphis) to make a selection. Knicks fans can only hope for more aggressive moves on day two of the draft.
