This Former Mrs. America Went Viral Sharing What It Means To Be Intersex
Despite this, intersex people are often left out of conversations, or worse, forced into surgeries performed without medical necessity or consent, often as children, to mold their bodies into binary ideas of sex and gender.
Such was the case for Jackie Blankenship, a 40-year-old radio personality from Michigan — and former Mrs. America — who spent much of her life feeling like she had to keep a part of herself hidden.
Jackie's parents learned she had complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS), a condition where the body can't respond to androgens, or male sex hormones, when she was 4 years old. At 15, she had her testes surgically removed. At 18, she learned she didn't have a fully formed vagina and would need to undergo dilation therapy if she ever wanted to be sexually active. Still, Jackie says she didn't fully understand what was happening to her body until well into adulthood.
"It has been a long road to say the least," she told BuzzFeed. "Intersex people often don't even know they are intersex until puberty, some even later. I was diagnosed at 4 years old but really only had a vague understanding of what this meant about me and my body until I was in my mid-20s."
Today, Jackie uses TikTok to share her story and raise awareness about intersex, hoping to help others better understand what it means to be intersex and why representation matters. In one viral video that's now been viewed over 9 million times, Jackie shared one fact about her intersex body for every mile she ran, sparking a powerful and educational conversation around an identity that's far too misunderstood.
"I hated this part of me for a long time, that hatred turned more into fear as I got older. I was afraid of people finding out or not thinking I was a girl or woman," she told BuzzFeed. But turning 40 in May marked a shift, she said. "I felt like I had kept so much of myself a secret. I carried a LOT of senseless shame and secrecy regarding this and so decided talking about it to my circle wasn't enough, I needed to start talking about it out loud and tell my story."
Here's everything she shared:
"Mile one, 9:08. Fact number one: I have complete androgen insensitivity syndrome, which is an intersex condition. I have XY chromosomes. We typically see XY in males, but when you have CAIS, you have XY chromosomes, too."
"Mile two, 8:52. Fact number two: People with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome have external female genitalia. We have full breast development, and on the outside, we look completely female, even though — going back to fact one — we have XY chromosomes."
"Mile three, 8:45. I'm not trying to pick it up; I probably should slow down. Fact number three: While I do have external female genitalia and breast development, I do not have a vagina. Yeah, so see, we have a urethra; we have the whole outer exterior, but our vaginal opening leads to what they call a blind pouch, meaning it goes nowhere. I don't have a cervix or anything inside, so dilation therapy is required if you wanna create that kind of vagina."
"Mile four, 8:39 — I have no business going this fast. Fact four: I was born with testicles, yes. Now, here's the thing. Like a male, my testes produce testosterone. But my body can't process testosterone cause I have complete androgen insensitivity syndrome, so that testosterone was converted into estrogen, and that's what made me develop female. Now, due to the lack of testosterone, the testes were never gonna drop. They wouldn't be like a sack; they would just remain in my abdomen."
"Mile five, 8:26, and I'm not trying to go faster every mile. I just apparently am. Fact five: I don't have a period. I've never had a period. I was born without ovaries, or uterus, or cervix, or fallopian tubes, or any of that, so I don't have periods. So frankly, I know nothing about them and I don't understand them."
"Mile six, 8:09. I swear I'm probably gonna crash and burn these last few miles. Anyway, next fact: I don't create any body odor, and I don't grow any body hair because my body can't respond to testosterone. So, I don't get BO. I don't have pubes, and I don't have underarm hair. I've never shaved my underarms a day in my life."
"[Mile] seven, 7:56. I'm crazy today. Okay, another fact about me: I'm completely infertile. All people with CAIS are infertile. We don't have ovaries and our testes do not produce anything that could create life, so we can't have biological children."
"Mile eight, 8:28. Slowing down a little bit. So, our next fact: Women with CAIS are typically pretty tall. So, I'm only 5'6", which isn't super tall, but my mom's only 4'10"; my sister's only 5'2", so I'm tall considering the family."
"Mile nine, 8:05, and I'm spent. And my last fact: Intersex people like me are operated on every day, especially children, babies, and teens, minors, and they don't really need it most of the time. A lot of times, because people don't understand a body that doesn't fit the mould, they're trying to change it and fix it. But what if we're not broken?"
The response to her video was overwhelmingly supportive. Thousands of commenters thanked Jackie for opening up. One person wrote, "I just looked up the statistics -- 1.7% of humans are born intersex. That's a lot of humans. and yet, this is rarely talked about! Thank you for making this video and educating is Tiktokers!"
Another said, "I have red hair and blue eyes. The fact that there are 10x as many intersex people in the world as people like me has always been one of the reasons why I stand up for intersex and trans rights. No one has ever looked at me and told me I'm not real. Much love to you."
And yes — plenty of people were a little jealous of Jackie's side effects. "NO body odor, NO body hair, NO period???" one person said, echoing dozens of similar comments.
Of course, normalizing intersex is what we should all be doing, but for Jackie, being intersex has not felt like a "superpower" as she never got a choice to live in any other body. "Do the side effects of this condition sound like nothing but good? Yeah, of course," she said in another video. "... But, like honestly, I would take being a, you know, a fertile woman with body odor and hair that I had to shave, and a period over the fact of having to do dilation therapy just to be intimate with my husband."
Jackie's story is just one of many. Intersex bodies are far more common than people realize, with over 30 known variations. "The common misconception is that 'intersex' is visible," Jackie told BuzzFeed. "People think if you have an intersex variation, you'll be able to see it, but in many cases, being intersex is something that may affect your internal reproductive system, your hormones, or your chromosomes, all things you can't see with the naked eye."
And despite being a naturally occurring variation, in many cases, doctors perform surgeries on intersex babies or children, like the removal of Jackie's testes at age 15, to make their bodies conform to binary ideas of "female" or "male." Intersex babies are also legally assigned a sex at birth, even if their bodies don't fully align with those categories.
For Jackie, she said one of the hardest parts of being intersex is navigating the medical system. In some of her videos, she shares experiences of going to the doctor and being asked the same questions repeatedly, like when her last period was, and having to explain her condition over and over to her providers.
"I wish doctors had more information about intersex conditions. Often, most medical providers have never met a person with my variation and have little to no answers about my body," she told BuzzFeed. "I am normally stuck providing information to them instead of them answering questions for me. It starts at the beginning, though — recognizing intersex people in health class and basic education, so as we get older, it's not such a foreign concept."
Jackie's story is a reminder that bodies don't always fit neatly into boxes, and that's not something to fix. It's something to understand. "I've stopped caring what others may think or what political agenda they want to tie to my biology. I'm not as rare as people may think," Jackie said. "And if me talking about it can help another intersex teen or young adult, then it's all worth it."
You can keep up with Jackie on TikTok, where she shares videos to help people better understand intersex conditions. She also hosts a podcast called The Unedited Body on Apple and Spotify, where she dives deeper into what it has meant to be intersex.

French Bulldog's Reaction to Smelling Again After Surgery Delights Internet
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A video of a dog's reaction to smelling food for the first time after surgery melted people's hearts. A French bulldog named Kygo recently underwent surgery for a condition known as brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, or BOAS. The surgery helps alleviate the breathing difficulties of brachycephalic dog breeds—like English bulldogs, pugs and Boston terriers—an article from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine said. The "nose job" surgery, as his owners called it on the dog's TikTok account @ involved opening his nostrils, reducing the soft palate and then removing laryngeal saccules to prevent further obstructions. And 24 hours postsurgery, Kygo's entire life changed as he rediscovered his sense of smell. In last week's TikTok video, which amassed over 7.5 million views and 1.6 million likes, Kygo intently sat next to his owners as they ate. He looked up with eyes full of amazement because the food smells wafted through his nostrils for the very first time since surgery. Screenshots from a TikTok video of a French bulldog smelling food for the first time after nose surgery. Screenshots from a TikTok video of a French bulldog smelling food for the first time after nose surgery. @ He wasn't begging for a nibble of their food, as many dogs might have done. Instead, he tilted his head higher, embracing all the delicious aromas in a new way he hadn't experienced before. His nostrils flared in and out in amazement. Now, he's a smelling machine and can't get enough whiffs of everything around him. Newsweek reached out to the owners via email for additional information and comment. What Do the Comments Say? With over 5,770 comments, the TikTok video started a debate among viewers. Many fell in love with Kygo's precious reaction, calling him the "goodest sniffer." "Sniffing in HD now," wrote a viewer, while another pointed out: "The way he looked at you after the first sniff was like, 'Omg, you right!'" A third user commented: "He looks like he's suspicious about his newfound sense of smell." However, others believed this clip shined a light on the dangers of breeding dogs. They claimed the surgery could have been avoided. "The fact we have to perform this surgery on some breeds in the first place is HIGHLY upsetting," a person said. The article from Cornell said BOAS is a genetic condition, and these dogs, which have difficulty breathing, require surgical therapy or have a hypoplastic trachea, should not be considered for breeding. Doctors Say Injecting Botox Here Can Make You Look Fresher And More Awake. This Is How To Tell If It's Right For You.
"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." These days, it seems like there's nothing Botox can't do—or, rather, nowhere it can't be injected). Whether it's the jaw, the traps, or the neck, the beloved injectable is being used for way more than just smoothing wrinkles. At the top of the list? Lifting your brows. Yes, the social media hype is real: A few needle pokes can in fact leave you with more elevated arches. 'Patients, of all ages, are asking for the Botox brow lift by name,' says Jessica Weniger, the lead aesthetic medicine physician assistant at the Med Spa at Northwestern in Chicago. Why the hype, and why now? Meet the experts: Jessica Weniger, is the lead aesthetic medicine physician assistant at the Med Spa at Northwestern in Chicago. Joshua Korman, MD, is a board-certified plastic surgeon in California. Teresa Song, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. There are a few factors at play. There's the social media effect, of course. The content around the #botoxbrowlift is plentiful and spikes people's interest, says Weniger, who notes that the same thing happened with lip flips. Hand-in-hand with the TikTok and Instagram of it all is the fact that more and more young people are using Botox. 'Twentysomethings are curious and thinking about what they can do to prevent the signs of aging,' says Joshua Korman, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon in California. 'The brows, which naturally drop as you age, are a big component of that.' Similarly, he says there's an increased focus on brows in general, noting that he's also seen an uptick in surgical brow lifts. And finally, there's the fact that a Botox brow lift strikes the perfect balance between delivering legitimate results while still looking totally natural. You can leave the rest of your face alone and just do a Botox brow lift to create an open-eyed, naturally youthful appearance, says Teresa Song, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. So, is it all great as it sounds? Here, the lowdown on how Botox can raise your brows up. What exactly is a Botox brow lift? A quick refresher: Botox is the brand name of botulinum toxin A, an injectable neuromodulator that works by relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles (those lines that form when your facial muscles move). Botox is just one of many brand names: Dysport, Juveau, and Xeomin are other popular options, and all of them can be used for brow lifting purposes, says Dr. Song. 'Botox just has the name recognition, so it gets used to describe the entire category, much like calling a tissue a Kleenex,' adds Weniger. During a Botox brow lift, the neuromodulator is injected into the orbicularis oculi muscle, which is situated in a circular formation surrounding the eye. This muscle pulls the eyebrow down, so when you relax it, the brow is lifted and the eye appears more open, Weniger explains. Squint and shut one eye tight: 'You can actually see where the muscle pulls downward,' says Weniger. 'It's above where any crow's feet would be. This very upper portion of the muscle is what we're targeting when we inject for a Botox brow lift.' Two other muscles—the corrugators, which kick in when you frown, and the frontalis muscle, the big one across the front of your forehead—can also be strategically injected during a Botox brow lift. Injecting here helps to also raise the middle part of the eyebrow, which often makes for the most natural end result, says Dr. Song. Raising just the tail of the eyebrow can sometimes create an strange, cartoon villain-esque appearance, adds Dr. Korman. Who is a good candidate for a Botox brow lift? Anyone wants to lift their brows and make their eyes look a little more open can totally try this, assures Dr. Korman. That's in stark contrast to a surgical lift, which he reserves for older patients only (this in order to minimize the likelihood of needing future surgeries as they continue to age). A Botox brow lift is also a good way to correct any minor asymmetry, which is very common, notes Weniger. And arches aside, this procedure might actually help address some upper eyelid sagging, too. 'It won't remove excess skin the way a surgical upper blepharoplasty will, but injecting in this area can provide a bit of lift for lids that are hooded or droopy,' she says. Dr. Song agrees: 'Pull upwards on the outside edge of your brow. If this raises your upper eyelid, you'll likely see the same effect with a Botox brow lift.' What to expect during a Botox brow lift. Your injector will talk through your concerns and goals and take before photos. Some may choose to mark up the areas they'll be treating, but everyone should have you make a few facial expressions. 'If they don't ask you to animate, that's an absolute red flag,' Weinger cautions. 'They need to be able to see what the muscle is doing and how it's behaving. Everyone's anatomy is a little different and injection points aren't a one-size-fits-all.' If you just want the outside part of your eyebrow lifted, expect about one to four tiny injections per side, Weinger says. If you also want to raise the middle part, it will be double that, adds Dr. Song. An important FYI: While you can absolutely opt for just a Botox brow lift, it's more often than not combined with treating the crow's feet and/or forehead. But because of how the muscles all interact, it can be tricky to smooth out horizontal forehead lines and lift the brows. If you're concerned about both, talk to your injector about how to achieve the best possible results in all areas, advises Weniger. Happily, no pain equals a lot of gain. Weniger says her patients are consistently surprised by how fast, easy, and nearly painless a Botox brow lift is. (A tiny needle means the pokes feel like a tiny pinch, nothing more.) Still, if your pain tolerance is non-existent, ask your injector to ice the spots they'll be injecting for a few minutes beforehand. This works wonders to numb the skin so you really won't feel anything, Weniger says. How long does a Botox brow lift last? 'The bad thing about Botox is it's not permanent; the good thing about Botox is it's not permanent,' says Dr. Korman. Point being, if you love the results, you'll have to repeat the process every three to four months. Not thrilled? No harm, no foul. Just keep in mind that all injectable neuromodulators work on a bell curve. 'The full results kick in at the two week mark, then gradually come back down to baseline over the course of three to four months,' Weniger explains. To that point, if you want to boost your brows before a big event, make sure you schedule your appointment a few weeks out in order to see the best effect, Dr. Song advises. How much does a Botox brow lift cost? This depends largely on your provider and where you live. 'Some places charge by the unit, other areas charge by the area treated,' says Weniger. When it's just a Botox brow lift, the area is small and you typically only need 10 to 20 units she says, citing anywhere from $150 to $400 as an average. What are the risks of a Botox brow lift? Bruising is a risk with any injections, though can be more likely around the eyes where the skin is so thin, Weniger explains. The good news: Because the needles are so small, the bruises will be too. Much more serious (albeit less likely) is the risk of ptosis, or unwanted eyelid drooping. It's not a super-high risk, because you really need to inject the muscle much deeper than you should be, but it is possible, says Dr. Song. The best way to minimize the likelihood of this happening? Always see an experienced, licensed, injector. Make no mistake about it: A Botox brow lift isn't a direct, one-to-one substitute for its surgical counterpart. You won't get the same amount of lift, excess skin can't be removed, and it really is best for lifting just the tail of the brow, says Dr. Korman. And, of course, you'll have to schedule regular appointments in order to maintain the results. Still, for those who don't want to go under the knife, 'This is about as good as it gets,' says Dr. Song. 'The brows set the tone for the face. You can modify them with something that has a long and well-studied history, and not look completely overdone.' So, as long as you keep your expectations realistic and prep your calendar (and wallet) for several treatments per year, you may quickly find yourself a member of the Botox brow lift fan club.
