Glasgow Times13-05-2025

The 21 children, all aged between seven and eight, completed the challenge at Scotstoun Stadium, where the athletics events for the 2026 Glasgow Games will be held.
Organised by a group of parents, the event aimed to support the West End school's efforts to upgrade its outdoor spaces and play areas.

Despite the warm weather, the children ran more than 100 laps of the stadium, each covering an average of four laps (1.31 miles), contributing to the total marathon distance of 26.2 miles. They completed the challenge in 28 minutes.
Isla Bradley, seven, said: "It was very fun and exciting, especially because I was doing it with my friends and we raised lots and lots of money for the school."

Rebecca Honeybunn, one of the organisers, added: "The kids did an amazing job completing the challenge, and we're incredibly grateful for the support from parents and the local community, including Scotstoun Stadium. They absolutely smashed their target, so they should all be very proud."

Andrew Robson, headteacher of Hillhead Primary, which has around 600 pupils, said: "This is a fundraising initiative that has been driven by the pupils themselves, and we are extremely proud of all of them.
"Their original target was £500 so to have increased their target to an incredible £1500 is wonderful.
"Our Primary 3s were very clear, they would like the funds to go towards purchasing playground equipment and improving our play spaces and this will benefit all our pupils."

He added: "I'd like to thank the parents and carers who have worked so hard and supported their children to complete such a successful fundraising campaign on behalf of our school."
Ahead of their efforts, the kids also received a very special message of support from double Commonwealth gold medal champion Eilish McColgan, European record holder for the 10km road race, and the British record holder for the 5000m, 10000m and half marathon.
Eilish, who is in Japan at the moment, congratulated the children on taking on a "monstrous challenge" and wished them good luck.
Donations will be accepted until the end of the month via the event's Just Giving page.

'I would love that' - Liverpool urged to hijack £60m Manchester United transfer

Emile Heskey wants Liverpool to hijack a Manchester United transfer deal as the Reds look to bolster Arne Slot's squad this summer. Liverpool have already signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and are closing in on a huge deal for his former teammate Florian Wirtz. The Anfield club are also pushing to sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and want to sign another attacker to strengthen Slot's attacking firepower. Liverpool won the Premier League by ten points last season but know reinforcements are needed ahead of their title defence with Manchester City expected to come back stronger and Arsenal well-placed for another title tilt. At the other end of the table, Manchester United made Matheus Cunha their first summer signing and are now working on a deal for Bryan Mbeumo. Mbeumo has verbally agreed a move to Old Trafford but United are yet to meet Brentford's £60m valuation for a player who scored 20 Premier League goals last season. The Cameroon international was linked with Tottenham and Newcastle United before Manchester United emerged as the frontrunners to secure his signature. But Heskey wishes Mbeumo was heading for his former club Liverpool, insisting he would have been a perfect addition to Slot's squad. 'It's hard to ever say Liverpool make mistakes in the market, because their strategy is usually just so solid,' the former England striker told Prime Casino. 'I would have loved to have seen Bryan Mbeumo at Anfield with Liverpool though. He's got loads going for him. Manchester United In: Matheus Cunha Out: Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof Liverpool In: Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi Out: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher 'He was someone that is tried and tested in the Premier League for a few years as well. His work rate's astounding. He knows where the goal is. He's very, very technical and understands the way that Liverpool would want to play. 'So it was interesting to see that they never really went in for him.' Mbeumo looks set to join a Manchester United team that finished just 15th in the Premier League last season and will not be involved in any European competition next year. Asked how United were able to attract Mbeumo and Cunha despite their dismal 2024-25 campaign, Heskey added: 'The thing is with United is that they still have the pull to attract players. 'Normally, Mbeumo would be wanting Champions League football, knowing what the club are going to do. 'Even now, without Europe, in a transitional phase, United can still get hold of players like him and Matheus Cunha. More Trending 'It's a bit like when I chose Liverpool, who weren't yet at their best. I always supported Liverpool, but I always wanted to be in on the ground floor on their comeback. 'I understood the assignment, and I saw where things were going if they went well. 'Mbeumo probably feels the same. He can be part of something that can be great again. 'Let's be honest, it's Liverpool and Manchester United when you're abroad. They're the only two clubs who matter to the rest of the world.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Benjamin Sesko's manager tells him to reject one club after Arsenal and Man Utd

Arsenal are battling it out with A-Hilal to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko (Picture: Getty) Slovenia head coach Matjaz Kek has advised Benjamin Sesko to ignore interest from the Saudi Pro League and make a 'smart' decision over his future this summer. Arsenal are on the hunt for a high-class centre-forward and have identified RB Leipzig attacker Sesko as a possible solution up front on the back of another trophyless season, along with Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres. RB Leipzig are open to offers for their star striker as they look to make up for the financial loss of missing out on Champions League qualification and the Bundesliga club have been in talks with the Gunners since last month. It's understood Manchester United have also held discussions over a move for Sesko following a disappointing campaign for both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. Reports on Monday claimed Arsenal and RB Leipzig had hit a roadblock in their transfer negotiations, with the north Londoners told to cough up £70million or walk away from a deal for the 22-year-old Slovenia international. The news that Saudi outfit A-Hilal have joined the race for Sesko's signature has only complicated matters for Arsenal, even though the playerhimself would ideally prefer to remain in European football. A-Hilal are intent on making a marquee signing having appointed Simone Inzaghi their new manager last week – and have also explored bids for Victor Osimhen and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes this summer. Kek (middle) hopes Sesko stays in European football (Picture: Getty) Sesko missed Slovenia's victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina (Picture: Getty) Facing the media after Slovenia's 2-1 defeat of Bosnia and Herzegovina,Kek did his best to warn Sesko over a proposed move to Saudi Arabia at this stage of his career. 'Benjamin Sesko and Saudi Arabia? I would advise him to never go there, at least not at his age,' the Slovenia boss told reporters. While Kek enjoyed his brief spell managing Al-Ittihad, he is convinced Sesko should only have eyes for Europe's top clubs. On the interest Sesko has attracted from the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, AC Milan and Juventus, Kek said: 'This is a great recognition, these are clubs that mean a lot. RB Leipzig are holding out for a fee of £70m for the Slovenian (Picture: Getty) 'It's not that I underestimate the Saudi Pro League. On the contrary, I worked there at Al-Ittihad and the club is still a part of me. 'I also watch the league regularly… but the time will come for Benjamin Sesko for that. 'I am convinced that Benjamin himself and the people who care for him will be smart enough to make the right solution. More Trending 'That means going somewhere where he can play football because that is the only way he can be happy.' Sesko was named in Slovenia's squad for the side's friendly matches against Luxembourg and Bosnia and Herzegovina this month. However, the former Red Bull Salzburg man played no part in either clash to avoid the risk of injury, with transfer talks ongoing behind the scenes. Sesko has scored 39 goals in 87 games for RB Leipzig and is tied into a contract at Red Bull Arena until June 2029. Arsenal transfer target Leroy Sane reaches 'verbal agreement' with new club

Leroy Sane is set to snub a return to the Premier League and has reached a 'verbal agreement' with Galatasaray. The former Manchester City winger sparked a transfer frenzy earlier this month after opting to leave Bayern Munich as a free agent. Sane was inundated with offers but is now, according to Sky Germany, on the verge of signing a multi-year deal worth between £8.47million and £10.16m. The 29-year-old's agent, Pini Zahavi, had been conducting talks with a number of leading European clubs, including the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham. Mikel Arteta is desperate to bolster his forward line this summer and had reportedly been keen to reunite with Sane having worked with him during their time together at City. Spurs, too, were credited with a strong interest while, in recent days, Al-Hilal had emerged as suitors. More Trending Sane is, however, on the cusp of signing for the Turkish giants and officiallybringing down the curtain on his five-year spell at the Allianz Arena. Bayern, for their part, had been keen on agreeing fresh terms with Sane but were not prepared to break their wage structure to do so. Having made his final decision, Sane will leave before Bayern jet out to America for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
