Nair sends strong statement before England Tests with rollicking 204 for India A against Lions

India Gazette3 days ago

Canterbury [UK], May 31 (ANI): Karun Nair's redemption arc in England began with a rollicking double century for India against the Lions on Day 2 of the first unofficial Test in Canterbury on Saturday.
With the sun shining over Canterbury, Karun stepped on the crease with an ambition of continuing to thrive with his formula of success and making England Lions toil hard for wickets.
He pulled the curtains down on the opening day with an unbeaten 186 and slowly found his rhythm after sprinting for a couple of singles.
Nair's resolve to maintain his defensive stance and leave the deliverers travelling in the corridor of uncertainty continued as England Lions hunted for wickets with its unbridled pace attack.
The 32-year-old had to wait till the final over of the 101st over to get his hands on the elusive landmark. Eddie Jack went wayward in line and length, allowing Nair to exploit the gap.
He sent the ball racing towards the boundary rope for a four and brought up a sizzling double ton. Nair soaked in the sound of applause that echoed in the stadium and kissed his helmet to allow the landmark moment to sink in.
'Dear cricket, give me one more chance' was what Nair wished in December 2022. Since then, he has latched onto every opportunity to make a strong case for earning a spot in India's XI for the five high-stakes Tests against England, scheduled to kick off on June 20.
Throughout his stay on the crease, Nair remained unfazed by his underwhelming run in the IPL and the events that took place at the other end.
Dhruv Jurel kicked off the day with an air of positivity and picked up a boundary to mark the resumption of his swift blitzkrieg. However, he fell six runs shy of a deserved hundred. Ajeet Dale deceived Jurel to end his swashbuckling exploits on 94(120).
Nitish Kumar Reddy showed intent but could survive for 22 deliveries after depositing the ball into the gloves of England Lions captain James Rew.
Shardul Thakur went berserk in his limited stay and reeled off a couple of boundaries to race to 18 from 13 deliveries before Nair holed it to Rew off Zaman Akhter and returned with 204(281). (ANI)

'I told AB de Villiers 'I'm going to go. It's too much': Virat Kohli unburdens heart after finally 'crossing the line'

Aggression has long been the emotion most synonymous with Virat Kohli. The wild celebrations, fist pumps, chest-thumping, energetic high-fives, and euphoric roars — these are all trademarks of Kohli, and all were expected when Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally ended their 18-year wait with a maiden IPL title. But for the man who gave his entire career to one franchise, whose "heart and soul belong to Bengaluru", the moment overwhelmed him — he buried his face in his palms, eyes filled with tears. There was a hint of impatience on Kohli's face as he fielded near the boundary ropes, with each ball and the shifting equation only adding to the intensity. He could barely contain himself. Having waited his whole career for this moment — coming close thrice before, once as captain — the emotional burden was indescribable. Even his usual crowd-whipping gestures were missing. This was a Kohli flooded with emotion, on the verge of tears, as he signaled to his former RCB teammate AB de Villiers — waiting near the ropes, ready to celebrate — that he just wanted it to be over. "What was special was having him right at the boundary line in the last two overs. And I told him, I'm going to go, like it's too much to take. And then, when Hazlewood bowled that second ball, and it didn't go for six, they needed five sixes. I was gone. And I know how I've held back the tears for the last three balls of that innings. But they know how it feels," he told Star Sports in the presence of De Villiers and another former RCB players Chris Gayle. Kohli also reflected on the long struggle to win the title despite leading one of the most "explosive" line-ups alongside de Villiers and Chris Gayle. The 36-year-old said Tuesday's triumph against Punjab Kings felt far more meaningful because his old teammates were there to witness it. "Why it's so special to share it with these two is because I shared my prime years with them. We tried so hard to win this,' he said. 'We felt we were close a few times — we had such a strong team, that explosiveness — but we never crossed the line. All of us had that hurt because we gave our best years to this franchise. From the bottom of our hearts, we wanted to win this for RCB. 'And I promise you, this feels 10 times more special because these two are standing next to me. It's honestly as much theirs as it is mine.' Kohli praised the bond the trio shares with RCB fans, noting that de Villiers and Gayle remain beloved in Bengaluru. 'When they come to Bangalore, you see how much people love them. The crowd goes absolutely berserk — because they know and appreciate how much they gave for this team. They deserve it as much as I do,' Kohli said. 'I know people are emotional and may get carried away, but these two gave it everything. It's equally theirs.'

Virat Kohli mentions Test cricket for the first time since retirement: 'IPL win with RCB still five levels below it'

At last, after 18 years, Virat Kohli finally got his hands on the coveted Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six runs in the summit clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to win their maiden IPL title. Kohli, who retired from Test cricket on May 12, addressed the importance of the longest format after the RCB won the IPL 2025 season. Kohli's Test retirement came as a shock to many as the right-handed batter called time on his career ahead of the all-important England tour, where India are slated to play five Tests. Kohli ended his Test career, having played 123 Tests, in which he scored 9230 runs at an average of 46.85. He smashed 30 centuries and 31 fifties in his 14-year-long career in whites. While speaking with former Australia batter Matthew Hayden after the IPL 2025 final, Kohli said that RCB winning the tournament means the world to him, but it still ranks five levels under Test cricket. 'This moment is right up there with the best moments I've had in my career. But it still marks five levels under Test cricket. That's how much I value Test cricket. And that's how much I love Test cricket. So I would just urge the youngsters coming through to treat that format with respect,' said Kohli. Kohli, who is the most successful Indian Test captain, having led the team to 40 victories under his tenure, said if young players want to earn respect around the world, then they need to take up Test cricket. 'So if you want to earn respect in world cricket all over, take up Test cricket. Give your heart and soul to it. And when you walk out with wonders on the other side, then you gain respect in the cricket world with legends like yourselves,' said Kohli. Speaking about the IPL 2025 Final, RCB posted 190/9 in the allotted twenty overs. Virat Kohli top-scored for the franchise with a knock of 43 off 35 balls. After the match came to an end, Kohli broke down and he struggled to fight back tears. The entire RCB squad came up to him to celebrate the victory.
