Ex-PM ‘sad' Brits losing interest in Ukraine
Speaking to The Telegraph at the Ukrainian embassy in London on Saturday, he lamented that support for Ukraine in the UK is declining.
'The interest in Ukraine and the appetite is so low nowadays. I find it quite sad,' Johnson said.
When asked to evaluate how well current Prime Minister Keir Starmer's administration has handled the Ukraine conflict, he responded: 'There are a lot of domestic issues that are very difficult right now, and you can see why they're distracted.'
Support among the British public for aid to Ukraine has fallen in recent years, polls suggest.
A YouGov poll from February 2023 showed that nearly three-quarters of respondents believed the UK was not providing Kiev with enough aid, whereas only 3% thought it was giving too much.
However, an Ipsos survey from this past February indicated that just over half of Britons supported the current level of aid, whereas nearly one in five said too much support was being provided.
The UK has committed £18.3 billion ($24.5 billion) in total aid to Ukraine, including £13 billion ($17.4 billion) in military assistance.
London has increasingly lobbied to deploy 'peacekeeping' troops to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire as part of a so-called 'coalition of the willing.'
Last week, Starmer's government announced that the coalition would set up permanent headquarters in Paris to coordinate with Kiev to 'regenerate land forces' for Ukraine and 'secure' its skies with fighter jets if there is a cessation in the hostilities.
Moscow has stressed that it views the initiative as preparation for a military intervention and warned that it views any NATO troops – under the guise of peacekeepers or not – in Ukraine as hostile.
Johnson resigned as UK prime minister in 2022, a few months after the escalation of the conflict. He torpedoed the first peace talks between Moscow and Kiev in Istanbul that year by convincing the latter to withdraw from the negotiations, according to the Ukrainian head negotiator at the time, David Arakhamia.

RT editor-in-chief's X account blocked in France
RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan's X account has been blocked in France, as Western countries continue to crack down on Russian media. According to X, the account was withheld in response to an unspecified legal demand. It remains unclear when access was restricted. 'My X account has been blocked in France. I have no idea what I did to offend [French President Emmanuel] Macron – I haven't even been saying that his wife is a man,' Simonyan wrote on Telegram on Monday, referring to claims that France's First Lady Brigitte Macron is secretly a man. Macron has long accused RT of spreading falsehoods without providing evidence, first making the allegation during his 2017 election campaign. The EU and UK have banned RT and several other Russian media outlets since 2022, accusing the channel of spreading propaganda during the Ukraine conflict. Moscow has responded by banning a number of Western state-funded networks, including the BBC and Deutsche Welle. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described the crackdown on Russian media in the West as 'global censorship and a regime of zero tolerance for dissenting opinions.'Earlier this year, prosecutors in Paris launched an investigation into X on suspicion that Elon Musk's platform was being used to meddle in French politics. The company denounced the probe as politically motivated and accused France of attempting to restrict free speech.

Kremlin comments on possible Putin-Trump meeting in Beijing
Russia is ready to discuss holding talks between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump should the latter attend commemorative events in Beijing in September, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday. The Chinese capital will host a military parade on September 3 to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two. Putin has already accepted an invitation to attend. Speculation has grown over a possible meeting involving Putin, Trump, and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the celebrations. Japan's Kyodo News reported that the Chinese government has decided to invite Trump, while The Times suggested that Beijing is positioning itself to host a trilateral summit. Chinese officials have not confirmed the reports. 'If it so happens that [Trump] is there, then, of course, we cannot rule out that the question of the expediency of holding a meeting will be raised,' Peskov told reporters on Monday, noting that the Kremlin has not yet heard whether Trump is going to Beijing. The day before the Kremlin spokesman said that although a meeting between the two would definitely happen in the future, it would require a lot of preparation, and the time has not yet come. The speculation followed a phone call between Trump and Xi in June, during which the US president said he had been invited to visit China, though no date was specified. Putin and Trump have spoken by phone multiple times in recent months, focusing on efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict. Trump recently criticized Putin, accusing him of resisting a settlement. The Kremlin responded by saying it viewed the criticism calmly and intended to maintain dialogue with Washington. Beijing has continued to position itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict. Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for a 'fair, lasting, and binding' peace agreement and urged all sides to prioritize a ceasefire and political dialogue. China has also expressed support for renewed direct talks between Moscow and Kiev. The last time Putin and Trump met in person was during the 2018 Russia-US Summit in Helsinki, Finland.
