Royal Navy warship seizes £30m of drugs in Middle East
HMS Lancaster deployed its Wildcat helicopter to oversee the operation involving a boarding team from 42 Commando which seized 80 packages of narcotics.
A Royal Navy spokesman said the haul was made up of 1,000kg of heroin, 660kg of hashish, and 6kg of amphetamine, worth an estimated £30 million on UK streets.
He said: 'It's the second bust in three months for the British warship, which is based in Bahrain and is attached to a New Zealand-led international task spread across the Indian Ocean hunting down illegal activity.

'And it's the second time the Royal Navy's new Peregrine drones – mini-helicopters which conduct reconnaissance sorties for hours on end and feed live information back to Lancaster's operations room – have played a vital part in the success.'
Lancaster's commanding officer, Commander Chris Chew, said: 'This is another example of where Lancaster has delivered at range, in isolation, utilising her own organic assets.
'Whether they come in the form of her Wildcat, our uncrewed air system Peregrine, embarked intelligence team or her Royal Marine boarding team, they delivered on operations in support of the Combined Maritime Forces and New Zealand-led Combined Task Force 150.'
Armed forces minister Luke Pollard said: 'I congratulate the crew of HMS Lancaster on this significant seizure, which is keeping dangerous and illegal drugs off our streets.
'This operation highlights the unique role our Royal Navy contributes, working to disrupt criminal operations around the world, keeping us secure at home and strong abroad.'

Body of British hiker, 36, found months after going missing in Italian Dolomites
The body of a British hiker who went missing in the Dolomites on New Year's Day has been found by mountain rescuers. Aziz Ziriat, 36, was last heard from on January 1 while hiking with a friend, Samuel Harris, in the Italian mountain range. Samuel, 35, was found dead just over a week after the pair went missing, his body covered in snow. Aziz's phone, bank card and glasses were found close to his friend's body. This morning (May 31) Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue teams said they have found Aziz's body, and are working to recover his remains. The friends, who both lived in London, were planning to climb a 3,000m mountain on January 1. Aziz filmed a video and shared it with family and friends on the day he disappeared, in which he said: 'Happy New Year! Woken up to some delightful sunshine, blue skies. 'There has not been a cloud in the sky since we got here, which is slightly unnerving but also quite jokes. 'I want to attack this today, get up into some of the 3,000 bits which are up yonder. 'Looking forward to a day scampering, we are not taking our packs today, for the last two days lugging up this God-forsaken valley, another day frolicking before schlepping over to the next valley.' But their families raised the alarm after they both missed their flight back to the UK on January 6. The Italian authorities began a search of the mountain, but their efforts were hampered by heavy snow and strong winds. They found Samuel's body on January 8 at the base of the Care Alto peak and suggested he may have fallen from rocks above. Rescuers traced their steps by tracking their mobile phones and managed to find both of their backpacks – but they found no trace of Aziz. Friends and family described Aziz and Samuel as experienced hikers and climbers who have faced harsh conditions before. Speaking soon after Samuel's body was found, his friend and business partner Spencer Jones paid tribute, saying: 'To say I am devastated would be an understatement, and I have no words to fully describe how I am feeling at the moment. 'The search is ongoing for our good friend Aziz Ziriat, so for now, I want to focus on Sam. 'He was an amazing friend of 23 years, ever since our school days. 'He was probably the most knowledgeable person I have ever known, and building the business with him has been an incredible journey.' British Airways steward detained after 'drug-fuelled' dance in business class
Scotland Yard is investigating a British Airways steward who allegedly danced naked in a business class toilet on a trans-Atlantic flight. After taking off for London Heathrow, fellow flight crew couldn't locate the steward until they reportedly found him 'completely naked' after a suspected drug binge during the in-flight meal service. The BA employee was then buckled into a first-class seat for the rest of the flight, witnesses said, before being escorted off the plane in a wheelchair. A British Airways crew member on the flight told The Sun: 'We think the guy popped pills when he was meant to be working. It is an extraordinary thing to do. 'The plane was cruising at 37,000ft over the Atlantic, but this bloke seemed to be higher than anyone else.' Police were notified and met the double-decker Airbus last week when it landed at Heathrow, as hundreds of passengers watched on. The employee has now been suspended from his job as police investigate the matter, but fellow crew members are still fuming about the incident. They said they worked the entire flight without breaks to cover for the dancing steward. 'It was a long time before he was located, and he was completely out of it,' a BA employee on the flight added. 'Not only is it really dangerous, it is a crazy way to end your BA career. This job can do ridiculous things to people, but staging a one-man disco in a Club World toilet is a new one on me.' British Airways told Metro the matter is one for the police. Scotland Yard has been contacted for comment. In 2023, British Airways crew members made headlines after claiming they were mugged in Brazil to cover up a night of debauchery. School mates partied hard on holiday - but it ended very badly at UK airport
School pals Lewis Ellis and James Poutch spent three-weeks in Thailand for a festival - they ended up in court after their bags were searched at Manchester Airport Two British school mates who went away on a three-week party holiday in Thailand received a shock when they landed back in the UK. Lewis Ellis and James Poutch were pulled aside at Manchester Airport and ended up in court because of what they brought back to the UK. Ellis, 20, and Poutch, 19, had travelled to South East Asia for the Water Festival, which is meant to symbolise new beginnings and cleansing troubles, in April. And customs officials in the UK found a total of 37 kilos of drugs in plastic-sealed packages in both of their suitcases when they returned. Both of the young men were stopped after flying home from Bangkok via Abu Dhabi and were confronted by officials. Ellis was pulled over first and told customs officers he had been on a three-week leisure trip with a friend he knew from school. When asked about the contents of his suitcase, the 20-year-old said: "I have cannabis in my bag, I may as well tell you because you're going to see it." 19.83 kilos of cannabis were found in his bag, reports Manchester Evening News. Poutch was then spoken to by customs staff. He told them he packed his suitcase himself and was not looking after it for somebody else. Officers discovered 17.22 kilos in his suitcase. Later in court, Georgia Kennedy-Curnow, prosecuting, said: "The defendant said he had lost his phone abroad and both defendants gave no comment in their interviews." Representing both, Simon Hustler said they had paid for the holiday and travelled there to attend the Water festival. But, while they were there, they came into contact with individuals in Thailand and they decided to transport the drugs. Ellis and Poutch were handed suspended sentences as the judge dubbed the incident "naïve and stupid". Sentencing, Recorder Geoffrey Lowe said: "You had an operational function in the chain, to courier these drugs into another country. This was naive and stupid for both of you - you exposed yourselves to the risk of imprisonment." Poutch, from Bradford, was handed 16 months suspended for two years and Ellis was given a 18 months suspended for two years. The young men were also both ordered to complete 240 hours unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days. Hustler told the court: "The defendants would not seek to persuade the court that this was anything other than naked stupidity by two young men. Their families are in court today and are as livid as they were when they were before the lower court." He said for Ellis, who had eight previous convictions on his record, this was a "last chance saloon".
