Fortis Healthcare Q1 net profit jumps 57 pc to Rs 260 cr

Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) Fortis Healthcare on Wednesday posted a 57 per cent increase in profit after tax at Rs 260 crore in the June quarter of FY26. The healthcare provider reported a profit after tax (PAT) of Rs 166 crore in the April-June quarter of last fiscal. Revenue increased to Rs 2,167 crore during the period under review as compared to Rs 1,859 crore in the year-ago quarter, Fortis Healthcare said in a statement. 'We have witnessed a healthy start to the financial year, as demonstrated in our Q1 earnings for both hospital and diagnostic businesses," Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, MD and CEO, Fortis Healthcare, stated. The recently executed O&M (operation & management) services agreement with Gleneagles India expands company's geographic footprint and provides an opportunity to leverage combined strengths to optimize operations and enhance efficiencies, he added. The company also consummated the acquisition of Shrimann Superspecialty Hospital in Jalandhar, further strengthening presence in Punjab region with around 1,000 beds, it said. 'In the diagnostics business, we have witnessed a strong recovery in both revenues and EBITDA margins, which is reflective of the brand building initiatives undertaken over the last few quarters. We expect this growth momentum to continue going forward," Raghuvanshi stated. (Representative/AP) A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation has unveiled significant insights into the role of the brain in type 1 diabetes management. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that halts insulin production, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. In the absence of insulin, the body resorts to breaking down fat for energy, causing a dangerous increase in blood sugar and ketoacids, a condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), typically treated with insulin. The study highlights the importance of leptin, a hormone produced by fat cells, in regulating hunger and energy balance via the hypothalamus in the brain. It has found that when insulin levels drop, leptin levels also decrease, misleading the brain into thinking there is an energy deficit despite the presence of glucose and fat. This miscommunication prompts the brain to increase sugar and ketone production, resulting in DKA, the study suggested. In 2011, Dr. Michael Schwartz, a professor at Washington University in the US, and his team conducted an experiment where leptin was injected into the brains of type 1 diabetic mice and rats. Initially, there were no significant changes, but after four days, it was found that the animals' blood glucose and ketone levels normalised without insulin. This breakthrough suggested that the brain alone might regulate blood sugar levels, challenging the conventional belief that type 1 diabetes solely stems from a lack of insulin. The study highlighted that not only did the sugar level drop, but it also stayed balanced—indicating the brain can regulate blood sugar on its own. The scientific community initially met this discovery with scepticism. However, recent studies and analyses have strengthened the hypothesis that the brain plays a crucial role in managing type 1 diabetes. Dr. Schwartz now aims to seek approval from the US FDA for human trials to explore if leptin can yield similar results in humans. Digital University VC appointment: Kerala cabinet approves draft ordinance

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 6 (PTI) The Kerala government on Wednesday approved a draft ordinance to amend the provisions of the Kerala Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology Act, 2021, in connection with the appointment of the Vice Chancellor of the Digital University Kerala. A cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan gave the nod to the draft ordinance amidst an ongoing tussle between the LDF government and Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar over the appointment of vice chancellors in various universities in the state. Ministers P Rajeev and R Bindhu visited Arlekar on Sunday and held discussions with him to resolve the deadlock over the appointment of VCs, days after the Supreme Court directed both parties to settle the dispute amicably. According to the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), the draft ordinance was approved by the cabinet to amend the Act in accordance with the UGC rules and recent court orders. It was also decided to recommend the Governor for promulgation of the ordinance, the CMO said in a statement. Among other decisions, the cabinet meeting also approved the second phase of the medical insurance scheme (Medisep) for state government employees and pensioners. The basic insurance cover will be increased from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, it said. Over 2,100 procedures for 41 specialty treatments will be included in the basic treatment package, the statement added.
