Illegal tobacco, vapes and fakes seized in Newport raids
It includes more than 300,000 cigarettes, 144 kilograms of tobacco, and 12,400 'unsafe' vapes – as well as nearly 5,000 counterfeit items – according to a new council report.
The seizures represent another busy year for Newport City Council's trading standards department.
While officers confiscated more tobacco products the previous year, the total value of seizures in 2024/25 is ten times higher, thanks to the recovery of expensive counterfeit items.
This is because the council estimates the value of fakes at the same price as their real counterparts.
Operations codenamed Frost and Firecrest have proved successful in targeting rogue traders, and the latter won the council and Gwent Police a national trading standards award for tackling illegal tobacco and vape supply in Pillgwenlly.
The city council encourages residents to report those illicit products via the 'No ifs no butts' campaign's website.
The campaign describes illegal vapes as 'untested' products which may not follow regulations – either because they are fake brands, high strength or potentially smuggled into the UK.
Single-use vapes have also been banned since June, and in Newport trading standards officers have visited more than 80 retailers across the city to provide information about the law change.
Illegal tobacco may also be smuggled or bootlegged into the country, and the term also covers sales of individual cigarettes, fake brands or otherwise untaxed products, according to 'No ifs, no butts'.
The council report for 2024/25 also includes information on underage sales of tobacco and vaping products.
Optimistically, incidents appear to have dropped since the previous year, when 17 out of 60 shops failed a 'test purchase'.
The figure for last year was an improved 11 failures out of 63, and each retailer affected has 'received a guidance intervention' on the rules.

Kyle Vaughan: 12-year murder investigation remains unsolved
Newbridge man Kyle Vaughan, then aged 24, disappeared more than 12 years ago. On what would have been his 37th birthday, Gwent Police has highlighted the ongoing investigation in the hope of attracting new leads. He was last seen around 11.45pm on December 30, 2012, before his silver Peugeot 306 was found crashed on the A467 road between Cross Keys and Risca. Moment crazy swordfight breaks out outside kebab shop before police rush in to arrest seven
This is the terrifying moment a sword fight broke out in a city centre street, before police arrested six men. Officers were called to Commercial Road, Newport, after a group of men were seen fighting in the street yesterday afternoon. Video shard to X showed the thugs with huge sword-like blades who were seen with bloodied faces and arms during the violence. The group were seen clashing into each other with the weapons as one fell to the ground and others attempted to interject. Gwent Police said six men, aged 25, 28, 33, 40, 42 and 52, and one 17-year-old boy, who are all from Newport, were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. They remain in custody. Four of the men have attended hospital, and two were later discharged while two others remain in hospital receiving treatment. Around six police cars, all with lights flashing, were surrounding the area, along with at least two vans. More than a dozen officers rushed to the scene where they cordoned off the area and redirected residents to help continue their journeys. 'This is now a live investigation and speculation, especially online and social media commentary, about the identities of those involved will not help us secure justice against those found to be responsible.' Detective Chief Inspector Neil Blyth, who is leading the investigation, said: 'We are still conducting inquiries to establish what has happened, so it is likely that you will see officers working in the area. 'While there is no cause for alarm, I would recommend taking the time to talk to them if you have any concerns or questions, but also if you have any details or information that could assist our inquires.' Newport councillor condemns illegal sale of vapes
Newport City Council's cabinet member for communities and sport, Mark Spencer has expressed how such crime will not be tolerated in the city. This follows the revelation that since Operation Firecrest began in October 2023, there have been 87 seizures of illegal tobacco and vaping products in the city. Councillor Mark Spencer, Newport City Council's cabinet member for communities and sport, said: 'The illegal trade of tobacco and vapes is harmful to our residents and those communities where it is taking place. We will not tolerate it in our neighbourhoods or our city. 'I would like to thank our trading standards officers for their continued fight against these criminals and the partners they work with including the police and National Trading Standards. 'As highlighted by the BBC, their dedication and commitment to stamping out the trade is having an impact and disrupting this criminal behaviour. 'Closure orders can only be for a limited period which is why the officers have been working with landlords. We are grateful to those who have taken their advice in relation to the type of tenants they have and urge others to be vigilant. 'We would welcome changes in the legislation which would strengthen the action that can be taken against those involved in the illegal trade and the premises they operate from.' The seizures included: 481,790 illegal cigarettes 199.05kg illegal hand-rolled tobacco (equivalent to 199,050 cigarettes) 26,856 illegal disposable vaping devices seized 168 million puffs from those devices 25 properties were forced to cease trading by legal closure orders All together this is equivalent to approximately 6 million cigarettes with a value of around £1.85 million. As well as enforcement action, the trading standards officers also work with landlords to help them ensure they let to bona fide and law-abiding tenants. In 2023, another operation identified a network of illegal tobacco sellers in Commercial St which resulted in the removal of a significant number of products from sale. A warrant was also executed at a residential address where cannabis and cash were found. Five shops were subject to closer orders and three people were charged with fraudulent trading to which they later pleaded guilty.
