Milk production likely to rise in Karnataka, pressureon govt to increase incentive for farmers

Time of India25-04-2025

Bengaluru: Driven by 60% excess pre-monsoon rainfall and with forecasts indicating an above normal rainy season, domain experts and stakeholders anticipate a second consecutive year of
milk overproduction
, a prospect that is not good news for either
Karnataka Milk Federation
(KMF) or dairy farmers.
While excessive pre-monsoon rain in 2024 helped overcome severe drought, it resulted in overproduction of milk. Daily inflow at KMF crossed the record 1-crore litres mark in July, compared to an average 85 lakh litres. Domain experts and stakeholders say, this year, peak inflow is likely to touch a staggering 1.2 crore litres by July-Aug.

"The signs are clear as daily inflow has steadily increased since Jan," said Rajkumar HS, president, Bangalore Milk Union Limited (Bamul). "At present, it is around 92 lakh litres, and inflow will most likely peak at 1.2 crore litres."

Bamul, which covers Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, and Ramanagara districts, is one of 17 milk unions that receive high quantities of milk from farmers. Rajkumar said daily inflow has reached 15.8 lakh litres compared to an average 15 lakh, and it is expected to cross 18.5 lakh at its peak.
Domain experts attribute surplus production to bountiful rain the state has already received and anticipate production to skyrocket with both Indian Meteorological Department and Skymet predicting 5% more than normal rainfall across the state. North interior Karnataka, especially, is likely to receive excessive rain.
"This will result in lush fodder and adequate drinking water which is conducive for dairy farming," said Prof MN Thimme Gowda, head of the agrometeorology department at University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru.
But, as in 2024, the glut is expected to pose a challenge. Milk unions will be forced to discourage inflows, and KMF will have to convert surpluses into skimmed milk powder — an expensive affair and a lose-lose situation for both farmers and KMF. While production cost of 1kg of milk powder is around Rs 240, the market price is only around Rs 120. Some milk unions might cut procurement prices, putting farmers in distress. The govt had raised retail prices of milk by Rs 9 per litre over three hikes since July 2023.
"Given last year's experiences, KMF should try and increase milk exports to neighbouring states and abroad while expanding the market for milk products, including curd, ghee, and condiments," said Suryanarayana PR, president, Karnataka State Milk Producers-Farmers Association. "More importantly, the govt should increase incentives for farmers from the current Rs 5 per litre to at least Rs 7. Congress promised this in its election manifesto; it is time for it to walk the talk."

Here's when Elon Musk's Tesla is planning to launch its robo taxi service in US

Representative Image Elon Musk has announced a "tentative" launch date for Tesla's robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, set for June 22. The Tesla CEO made this announcement in a post shared on the social media platform X (earlier Twitter), indicating that he'll be travelling from Los Angeles to Austin for the kickoff. Previously, the tech billionaire mentioned a June launch window for the service. When inquired about the start of public rides for the service, Musk specified June 22 as the current plan. He also noted that the first driverless trip from the Tesla factory to a customer's house is scheduled to occur on his birthday, June 28. In his X post, Musk wrote: 'Tentatively, June 22. We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift. First Tesla that drives itself from factory end of line all the way to a customer house is June 28.' The clip showed a black Model Y SUV, marked with a 'Robotaxi' logo, navigating an intersection and pausing for pedestrians, without a human driver inside. Musk said the pilot phase will be limited, starting with 10 to 20 vehicles equipped with a new 'unsupervised' version of Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. These initial tests will use the Model Y, rather than the upcoming CyberCab, which is scheduled for production next year. He added that the rollout will be 'geofenced,' meaning the robotaxis will only operate within specific areas, and Tesla employees will monitor them remotely. While some Tesla fans are excited by the launch in Austin, critics, particularly those concerned about road safety and Musk's political affiliations, have raised objections and are planning protests. Will implement Centre's schemes in Delhi: Shivraj Singh Chouhan to farmers

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Wednesday met farmers from different parts of Delhi in Tigipur village and assured them that all of the Centre's agricultural welfare schemes will be implemented in the Capital soon. Addressing a gathering of farmers from the city's rural belts, Chouhan said, 'Delhi's farmers were left out of the central government's schemes earlier due to the previous government. The state government has to send us a proposal… I have spoken to the Chief Minister, and she will soon send a proposal to ensure these are rolled out.' Chouhan is on the last leg of his 15-day programme, Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, under which he has travelled to 14 states already and is interacting with farmers directly. 'There is great demand for fruits and vegetables in Delhi. If agriculture is strengthened here, it will not just benefit the city but also ensure India's economy grows — because even today, half our population is dependent on farming,' he said. Farmers present at the event raised several concerns, including high electricity costs, lack of subsidies, and no retail outlets for fertilisers. 'We don't get any subsidy. And if there is, the process is too complicated to understand,' said a farmer. Another noted that tractors with Delhi registration numbers are charged commercial tax, which increases their input cost, so farmers have to purchase tractors from neighbouring Haryana. A mushroom farmer from Tigipur, cultivating on just two acres, said he spends Rs 40 lakh a year and makes Rs 10-15 lakh in profit by selling directly to Azadpur mandi and contracting with factories. A strawberry grower, with 10 acres under cultivation, said he earns Rs 12-13 lakh per acre. 'We plant strawberries in October and inter-crop it with sweet corn and capsicum later. We sell to Reliance, BigBasket and local mandis,' he said. 'There are some farmers who are doing very well and earning a lot. We also need to learn their best practices' Chouhan said at the chaupal. The cost of inputs remains a problem for farmers of the national capital. 'Agriculture doesn't exist in Delhi for the government. So, our electricity is charged at commercial rates, which is extremely high,' said another farmer. 'There is also no IFFCO shop in Delhi from where we can buy fertilisers,' another said. Chouhan said the government is planning to adopt a 'One Nation, One Farm, One Team' approach. 'Policies must not be made sitting in offices. The agriculture department, research scientists, and agricultural universities must go to villages and speak to farmers. Only then can we find solutions together,' he added.
