DK Suresh sets sights on KMF chair, ignites Congress turf war

Bengaluru: DK Suresh may have engineered a win for Congress-backed candidates in polls to Bangalore Milk Union Ltd (Bamul) board, a move that has strengthened the former Lok Sabha MP's bid to secure the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) chairman post, but rather than be a source of joy for his party, it has reignited a factional feud within. Supporters of deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar are pushing for his brother Suresh to head KMF, while chief minister Siddaramaiah's camp is backing Malur MLA KY Nanje Gowda. The clash is deepening tensions in the party, already strained by the reported unresolved issue of a power-sharing pact. The situation is further complicated by current KMF chairman LBP Bheema Naik's claim that Siddaramaiah had assured him of another term. KMF governs 16 milk unions in the state and as per its bylaws, chairpersons of unions become directors on its board. A KMF chairman is elected from among them. So far, 15 of the 16 unions have completed elections. The final one — Kolar Milk Union Ltd (Komul) — will vote on June 25. The KMF chairman election will likely be in the first week of July. Bamul's new board will elect its chairperson on June 10. With 11 of 14 members backed by Congress, Suresh is expected to take over. BJP has two members on the board and JD(S) has one. "We have Suresh at the forefront. We need his presence to strengthen KMF," said HS Rajkumar, outgoing Bamul chairman. "Party seniors may have promised somebody in the context of that time, but circumstances have changed now. Suresh will be elected chairman. Nobody can stop him." Shivakumar appears determined to bring his brother back into the spotlight after his 2024 Lok Sabha defeat to BJP from Bangalore Rural and the KMF post appears ideal. It is politically significant, since the federation oversees 25 lakh milk producers across Karnataka. It has historically been a powerful platform too. Former PM HD Deve Gowda's son HD Revanna led KMF for 13 years until 2009, using it to strengthen rural and Vokkaliga base of JD(S). Shivakumar now appears to be eyeing a similar strategy. "Many want me to take over as KMF chairman," said Suresh. "But that requires due procedure and consensus among various stakeholders, including party seniors. Let us wait and see." However, Siddaramaiah loyalists are pushing back. They have reportedly urged the CM not to yield to pressure from Shivakumar's camp. Urban development minister Byrathi Suresh, a Siddaramaiah supporter, recently said the CM will serve a full five-year term, challenging an alleged power-sharing formula. Meanwhile, Nanje Gowda remains firm on his claim. "Even the deputy CM assured me of the post. I hope he and the CM will not go back on their word. I've served the dairy sector for 38 years and I deserve the post," he said.

DK brothers to enter milk cooperative sector politics

BENGALURU: Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, also KPCC president, and his younger brother DK Suresh, former Bengaluru Rural MP, seem to have chalked out a plan to take control of the milk cooperative sector. As a stepping stone to become president of the reputed Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), Suresh filed his nomination papers for the post of Bengaluru Milk Union Limited (Bamul) from Kanakapura on Saturday. Once elected, which is almost certain, he is likely to be nominated to KMF from Bamul which will pave the way for him to be a contender for the KMF chief''s post. The elections to KMF are likely in a couple of months, after the polls to directors' posts in Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Mangaluru and Ballari milk unions. DK brothers' move is being interpreted as a response to former prime minister HD Deve Gowda's family that held the reins of KMF with his son and former minister HD Revanna remaining KMF president for nine years. Revanna still has a grip on the sector and is the president of Hassan Milk Union Limited (Hamul) for the seventh consecutive term. Suresh's election as KMF president may set the platform for oneupmanship between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. Siddaramaiah's man Bheema Naik, who has been KMF president since 2023, wants to continue in the post and may even contest the elections. He is credited with resurrecting the deal with the Andhra Pradesh government to supply Nandini ghee for Tirupati laddus.

DK Suresh enters dairy politics after Lok Sabha defeat

Bengaluru: A year after being defeated in the Lok Sabha election, former member of parliament and deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar's brother, DK Suresh , entered dairy politics in the state on Saturday by filing his nomination papers for the director post from Kanakapura for Bengaluru Urban , Bengaluru Rural, and Ramanagara Districts Co-Operative Milk Producers Societies Union Limited (Bamul). Suresh said he decided to contest in the Bamul election at the insistence of party leaders. There are talks that Suresh entered dairy politics to gain a strong hold on the milk unions and also to become Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) chairman. When asked about his interest in the KMF chairman position after his rest period, he said: "The KMF matter is not under discussion right now. Our party leaders served as presidents and directors of Bamul for the past 10 years. I'm standing with them because they insisted I should be with them. I submitted my nomination based on everyone's advice and suggestions by our party leaders." Suresh was supposed to contest in Channapatna assembly byelection, but he did not show interest. When asked about it, he said: "MLAs, former directors and presidents of Bamul, and many district leaders expressed their opinions for my contest. As a party worker, I had to bow to their words." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scam Exposed: What They Won't Tell You about zero trust! Milk production likely to rise in Karnataka, pressureon govt to increase incentive for farmers

Bengaluru: Driven by 60% excess pre-monsoon rainfall and with forecasts indicating an above normal rainy season, domain experts and stakeholders anticipate a second consecutive year of milk overproduction , a prospect that is not good news for either Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) or dairy farmers. While excessive pre-monsoon rain in 2024 helped overcome severe drought, it resulted in overproduction of milk. Daily inflow at KMF crossed the record 1-crore litres mark in July, compared to an average 85 lakh litres. Domain experts and stakeholders say, this year, peak inflow is likely to touch a staggering 1.2 crore litres by July-Aug. IC Markets Start Now Undo Bamul, which covers Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, and Ramanagara districts, is one of 17 milk unions that receive high quantities of milk from farmers. Rajkumar said daily inflow has reached 15.8 lakh litres compared to an average 15 lakh, and it is expected to cross 18.5 lakh at its peak. Domain experts attribute surplus production to bountiful rain the state has already received and anticipate production to skyrocket with both Indian Meteorological Department and Skymet predicting 5% more than normal rainfall across the state. North interior Karnataka, especially, is likely to receive excessive rain. "This will result in lush fodder and adequate drinking water which is conducive for dairy farming," said Prof MN Thimme Gowda, head of the agrometeorology department at University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru. But, as in 2024, the glut is expected to pose a challenge. Milk unions will be forced to discourage inflows, and KMF will have to convert surpluses into skimmed milk powder — an expensive affair and a lose-lose situation for both farmers and KMF. While production cost of 1kg of milk powder is around Rs 240, the market price is only around Rs 120. Some milk unions might cut procurement prices, putting farmers in distress. The govt had raised retail prices of milk by Rs 9 per litre over three hikes since July 2023. "Given last year's experiences, KMF should try and increase milk exports to neighbouring states and abroad while expanding the market for milk products, including curd, ghee, and condiments," said Suryanarayana PR, president, Karnataka State Milk Producers-Farmers Association. "More importantly, the govt should increase incentives for farmers from the current Rs 5 per litre to at least Rs 7. Congress promised this in its election manifesto; it is time for it to walk the talk."
