Defending champion Garrick Porteous pushes Sciot-Siegrist in Abu Dhabi thriller
The 35-year-old sits just two shots behind French leader Robin Sciot-Siegrist, who holds a one-stroke advantage over first-round leader, Spaniard Sebastian Garcia. Porteous is proving that class is permanent, even after stepping back from full-time competition at the end of last season.
The Englishman came into the week with modest expectations, having brought his 10-year full-time playing career to a close at the end of last season. Competing in his first HotelPlanner Tour event since October — and with only a handful of recent appearances on the Emirates PGA Tour — he has already exceeded his hopes
After opening with a solid three-under-par 67, Porteous followed up with an impressive six-under 64 on Friday, carding seven birdies and a single bogey to climb the leaderboard.
'I've surprised myself a little bit,' Porteous admitted. 'I had one swing thought coming into the week, and it's worked so far. Let's hope it continues over the weekend.'
'I played nicely out there. It's a lot tougher than last year — the greens are firm, the rough's up, and there's been a bit of wind in the afternoons. It's been a good test.'
Meanwhile, Sciot-Siegrist maintained a clean card to finish with a five-under 65, pushing him to 11-under for the tournament. Starting his round with six straight pars, the Frenchman picked up momentum around the turn and added birdies at 14 and 16.
'I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing and deal with the pressure,' said Sciot-Siegrist. 'There's still a lot of golf to be played. I've been putting well and today was another solid round.'
Dealing with tricky conditions at Al Ain — including firm greens and challenging pin positions — Sciot-Siegrist was pleased to walk away bogey-free.
'With the wind and some tough shots out there, I'm very happy with no bogeys,' he added.
Crucial support for the tournament comes from Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Arena, Al Laith, and eGolf Megastore. Golf fans can attend the event free of charge, with top-class action continuing through the weekend.

Haaland double fires City to thumping victory over Wolves
Manchester City signalled their intent to take back the Premier League title as Erling Haaland struck twice in a 4-0 win at Wolves on Saturday to begin their campaign. After four consecutive titles, City finished a distant third last season as Pep Guardiola's men failed to win any trophy for the first time in eight years. New signings Tijjani Reijnders, who was the star of the show at Molineux, and Rayan Cherki were also on target to give Guardiola hope his side will be back in the title race this season. Guardiola made a bold call amid ongoing uncertainty over City's goalkeeping situation. James Trafford made his first senior appearance for the club after returning for a second spell at the Etihad from Burnley. Ederson was not in the travelling squad as he is reportedly close to a move to Galatasaray, which could see City pursue a deal for out-of-favour Paris Saint-Germain 'keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Wolves are among the favourites to be relegated after losing talisman Matheus Cunha to Manchester United. Vitor Pereira's were ultimately well beaten, but the outcome could have been very different had they made the most of an uncertain City start. Marshall Munetsi powered a header into the bottom corner but was flagged offside. Instead, the game swung decisively in City's favour with two goals in three minutes, thanks to Reijnders creativity and goal threat from midfield. The £46.5 million ($63 million) signing from AC Milan jinked through the Wolves midfield before dinking a pass into Rico Lewis, who squared for Haaland to tap in at the back post. Moments later Oscar Bobb released Reijnders to arrow in a precise finish on his left foot. Trafford did not have many saves to make, but showed his ability with his feet to begin a flowing move for City's third. The England goalkeeper cushioned a long pass into Reijnders, who played a one-two with Bobb, before cutting the ball back for a clinical Haaland finish. Haaland was denied the chance to net a hat-trick as he was replaced by Cherki 17 minutes from time. The French international took just another eight minutes to make his mark by picking out the bottom corner from outside the box. Tougher tests of this new-look City are around the corner with Tottenham, Brighton, Arsenal and Manchester United in their next four league games. But the convincing nature of victory was more like the City of old, which will strike fear into their title rivals. Earlier, Richarlison scored twice to give Tottenham manager Thomas Frank a dream home debut with a 3-0 win over Burnley. Frank was seconds away from launching his era in charge with a trophy until a late Paris Saint-Germain revival won the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. The former Brentford boss replaced Ange Postecoglou despite the Australian ending Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought by lifting the Europa League last term. Postecoglou was undone by Tottenham's worst domestic season since 1976-77 as they finished just above the relegation zone in 17th place. Frank's bid to revive Tottenham's league fortunes got off to the perfect start in north London. Richarlison made the most of the faith shown in him by Frank as the Brazilian turned in Mohammed Kudus' cross to open the scoring. The pair combined again on the hour in more spectacular fashion as Richarlison's bicycle kick converted the Ghanaian's delivery. Brennan Johnson was Tottenham's Europa League final hero with the only goal against Manchester United and he began the new season by racing clear to slot in the third. 'Perfect start or dream start. A good performance against a difficult opponent. I will just enjoy it and I hope the players, the club and the fans enjoy it because that is important,' Frank said. Hoping to buck the trend, Sunderland shocked West Ham 3-0 on their return to the Premier League. Newcastle missed the unsettle Alexander Isak as they failed to find the breakthrough against 10-man Aston Villa in a 0-0 draw at Villa Park. The Magpies were the dominant side even before Ezri Konsa's red card for bringing down Antony Gordon 24 minutes from time. Isak had not been involved during Newcastle's pre-season as he appears determined to force through a move to Liverpool, who reportedly saw a £110 million ($149 million) offer for the Swedish striker rejected. The two clubs face off in their next league match at St. James' Park on August 25. Agencies

Atmane stuns Rune to set up semi-final showdown with Sinner, Gauff advances
French qualifier Terence Atmane toppled another top-10 player in Holger Rune on Thursday to line up a semi-final showdown with world number one Jannik Sinner at the Cincinnati Open. Atmane followed up his victory over fourth-ranked Taylor Fritz with a 6-2, 6-3 win over ninth-ranked Rune. The 23-year-old will now face the ultimate test against defending champion Sinner, who said he 'felt great' as he thrashed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-0, 6-2. 'I don't think any words can describe how I feel right now,' the 136th-ranked Atmane said after blasting 22 winners past Rune, 14 of them off his powerful lefty forehand. 'It's pretty insane to be honest,' added Atmane, who will move inside the top 100 in the rankings for the first time. 'I cannot believe it. Being here in the semi-finals of a Masters 1000, breaking into the top 100. It means a lot to me.' He will face a formidable challenge in Wimbledon champion Sinner, who powered through a rapid-fire opening set and bounced back quickly after dropping serve to open the second. Sinner prevailed in a brief 71 minutes as he claimed an eighth victory in a row at this event and his 30th match win this season. 'I felt great on the court today, you could see that,' said the Italian, who turns 24 on Saturday. 'But every day can be different. Let's see what I can do in the semis.' Sinner took advantage of Auger-Aliassime's serving troubles to take the first set in less than 30 minutes, the Canadian delivering three double-faults in the final game. After going down a quick break in the second Sinner broke back to level at 2-2 and advanced as Auger-Aliassime coughed up his eighth double-fault on match point. 'I served well today, that was the key for me,' Sinner said. 'I had a small drop in the second set and I'm happy that I broke back. He moves and serves well, he's difficult to play.' In the day's only other men's match, fifth-seeded Ben Shelton — coming off a title in Toronto — posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jiri Lehecka to book a quarter-final clash with third-seeded Alexander Zverev. French Open champion Coco Gauff, the women's second seed, booked her quarter-final berth with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Lucia Bronzetti. 'I could have maybe made some more first serves in that second set, but overall I had a lot of aces and unreturnables,' said Gauff, the 2023 Cincinnati champion who went on to win the US Open title that year. 'I'm happy considering where (my serve) was last week.' Gauff advances to her fifth quarter=final at WTA 1000 or Grand Slam level in 2025 out of 10 tournaments, and improves to 2-0 overall against Bronzetti. The American next takes on seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who crushed 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-1, 6-2. Krejcikova had treatment on her left foot in the second set and her movement was clearly hampered. 'She's a great player and can do anything she wants with the ball,' Paolini, a finalist at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2024, said. 'But I don't think she was at 100 percent today.' France's Varvara Gracheva rallied to beat Germany's Ella Seidel 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 in an error-strewn battle of qualifiers. 'I made her play her best game,' Gracheva said. 'She was so hot at the end of the first set that I could barely see a ball. 'I had to go back to basics, I had so many mistakes. I was doubting myself but I stuck with it.' She will face Veronika Kudermetova, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Poland's Magda Linette. Meanwhile, former world number six Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from the US Open, tournament organisers said on Thursday. The Italian, currently ranked 59th, has not competed since a first-round lost at Wimbledon in June after he had recovered from an abdominal injury. Agencies
