Ange Postecoglou could get instant return as club contact sacked Spurs boss

Daily Mirrora day ago

Tottenham announced the sacking of Ange Postecoglou last week, despite the Australian guiding the club to the Europa League trophy, with Brentford boss Thomas Frank quickly unveiled as his successor
Ange Postecoglou has been offered an immediate return to management after being sacked by Tottenham, with reports claiming Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli have "made contact" with the Australian.
Postecoglou was axed by Spurs chief Daniel Levy last week despite guiding the club to the Europa League trophy, their first piece of silverware for 17 years.

However, the former Celtic boss was under huge pressure after also overseeing Tottenham's worst ever Premier League finish of 17th, with the team losing 22 games. That was the most by any Premier League side without being relegated.

As a result, it seemed likely the Spurs hierarchy would swing the axe before an official announcement came at the start of this month. Thomas Frank was duly appointed as his replacement this week.
Attentions will now turn to where Postecoglou will end up next after bringing an attractive playing style to Spurs and ultimately the trophy they craved - coming through on his promise that he "always wins in his second season".
According to the Athletic, Saudi outfit Al-Ahli have reached out to Postecoglou as they line up their next manager, given that current boss Matthias Jaissle has turned down a number of contract extensions.
The club are now preparing for his successor and have placed Postecoglou on their shortlist alongside ex-Barcelona boss Xavi in the event that Jaissle departs.
But the report says talks are "moving quickly" with Postecoglou, who has just returned from a holiday in Greece following the end of a turbulent campaign.

Al-Ahli find themselves in a similarly complicated situation as Postecoglou was in at Spurs, given that Jaissle has just won the AFC Champions League and is popular with fans. Moving to the Middle East club would see him manage stars like Edouard Mendy, Franck Kessie, Riyad Mahrez Roberto Firmino and Ivan Toney.
Postecoglou will feel hard done by to have lost his job at Spurs given he ended the club's lengthy trophy drought, but the club insisted they could not be ruled by emotion as they explained the reasons for his dismissal.
A club statement announcing his sacking said: "We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.
"However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph."

Premier League star 'buys SIX flats in one day' - as the midfielder looks to expand his budding property empire

A Premier League footballer has expanded his property portfolio by buying six flats in a single day. The 30-year-old runs a successful buy-to-let business with more than a dozen homes and recently spent £1.6million to expand his budding empire. According to a report from The Sun, Bournemouth star Ryan Christie purchased the apartments in Glasgow back in April. The Scotland international runs Twenty Two Investment Properties Ltd alongside his partner, Georgina Bell, 30. The six properties - situated near the River Clyde in the Scottish city - represented a seven-figure outlay for the couple. Records note that the pair, who are reportedly set to marry this summer, purchased the flats at £275,000, £220,000, two at £215,000, and £175,000 and £160,000 on April 28. Christie missed much of the latter half of Bournemouth's campaign with a groin injury but was still named the Cherries' Player of the Season as Andoni Iraola's side recorded a top-half finish. 'Ryan's work rate is quite incredible. He was player of the season, has undergone surgery and it also looks like he is due to get married,' a source told The Sun. 'But he still found time to splash a fortune on half-a-dozen homes.' Christie joined Bournemouth from Celtic in 2021 and was instrumental in leading the club to the Premier League in his first season on the south coast. Since then the midfielder has racked up 98 top flight appearances for the club, scoring three goals.

Chelsea make £30m transfer bid for former Real Madrid defender

Chelsea have made a 35m euros (£30m) bid for former Real Madrid defender Mario Gila, according to reports in Italy. Gila, 24, spent three years in Real Madrid's reserve team before making his first-team debut for Los Blancos during the 2021-22 campaign. The former Spain U21 star only made one more appearance for Real Madrid, however, before being sold to Lazio in the summer of 2022. Lazio spent £5m to sign Gila from Real Madrid and the centre-back has been a mainstay in the team over the past two seasons. Gila made over 40 appearances last season as Lazio finished seventh in Serie A and reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri, who previously managed Chelsea, does not want to lose the Spaniard this summer but a number of clubs are interested in a deal. Italian outlet Il Messaggero say Chelsea, Tottenham, Bournemouth and PSG have all expressed interest in signing Gila. They also claim that Chelsea have already made an offer worth £30m, which was quickly rejected by Lazio. Lazio are also believed to have rejected a £35m bid from Bournemouth but will be prepared to sell if they receive an offer in the region of £50m. Gila is yet to represent Spain but was included in the senior squad for their Nations League quarter-final against Netherlands earlier in the year. Enzo Maresca's side finished fourth in the Premier League to qualify for next year's Champions League and won the Conference League. The Blues have already signed £30m striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town and welcomed Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr to Stamford Bridge after sealing their signatures earlier in the year. More Trending Chelsea are keen to sign another forward – either a striker of a winger – as well as more defenders. The west London club were in advanced talks to sign French goalkeeper Mike Maigan from AC Milan but the deal collapsed over the asking price. Chelsea are also open to offers for a number of unwanted players, including Joao Felix and Christopher Nkunku. Following a brief opening earlier in the month, the summer transfer window re-opens on Monday and shuts again on September 1. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
