‘He'll get a crack somewhere': Teammates back Lewis Dodd to succeed at another NRL club
Mitchell hasn't played since round 17 due to a quad injury but would be a huge inclusion for a team battling to avoid the wooden spoon against the Titans who are only above them on for and against.
The Rabbitohs have been ravaged by injuries to their best players this year, but there is hope that a few of them could return in the coming weeks, with Brandon Smith named on the bench, while Cam Murray and Campbell Graham both trained on Thursday.
Mitchell has been named on an extended bench but could be a late inclusion either at fullback or at left centre if Wayne Bennett decides to keep Jye Gray in the No.1 jersey.
'He did about two-thirds of the session today and he looked good, so fingers crossed he'll be a massive in for us,' teammate Jacob Host said.
'He's a great leader who played for NSW this year, and I thought he was outstanding for them. He'll be captain if he's out there and that's what we need in the team – we need leaders – so it'll be great to have him back.'
Gray wasn't sure whether Mitchell would be cleared for Sunday's trip to the Gold Coast but would love to have him back in the team.
'He trained a bit out there today, so it would be awesome to have him back. For sure (it's the most he's trained since the injury). He did a bit with the team today, so hopefully it's all good,' the fullback said.
'We'll just have to see how he pulls up tomorrow.'
While Mitchell got through most of the session, Dodd was nowhere to be seen, with officials later revealing he was working out in the gym as the squad trained out on the field.
It comes amid reports Bennett has told the halfback he's free to explore his options despite having another two seasons left on his deal.
The club would have to chip in a portion of his $650,000 a year salary if he does leave, with Dodd only used six times in first grade this year and left out of this week's roster despite the club having so many players out injured.
'We love having Lewis at the club. I think he's a great footballer and he's an even better bloke off the field,' Gray said.
'He's someone I enjoy being around, and I'm sure beyond this year he'll hopefully have a future in rugby league. Whatever he wants to do is up to him.
'I think he's good enough to do so (play at another NRL club). We have an abundance of halves here, but he's a good footballer and he'll get a crack somewhere.
'He's a great fella, he's down to earth and that's the reason you see that side of him because he's a genuine person.'
Souths still have a bye, so a win on Sunday would help them massively in their bid to avoid the spoon, although Host said that word was taboo in the sheds.
'It's a word we're not allowed to say,' he revealed.
'He (Bennett) just avoids it at all costs. We've had a lot of injuries this year and performances in certain areas haven't been as good as we wanted it to be, but we're trying to go out there and keep fighting with the gloves up each week.'

He was the Blues' forgotten man. Now he's in line for a Kangaroos recall
Jake Trbojevic is on Kevin Walters' radar for the end-of-season Ashes series as the new Kangaroos coach braces for the defection of several frontline forwards. After captaining NSW to an Origin series win in 2024, the Manly skipper was overlooked by Laurie Daley for this season's series defeat – but Trbojevic's big-game experience and past performances in the green and gold have not been forgotten by Walters. The expected defection of Payne Haas and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui to join Spencer Leniu in representing Samoa, and with Stefano Utoikamanu considering pledging allegiance to Tonga – means four front-rowers involved in this year's Origin series will be unavailable for the Kangaroos' three-Test series in England. Mitch Barnett is also out with a season-ending knee injury. Pat Carrigan, Lindsay Smith, Max King, Reuben Cotter, and Josh King are all in the Kangaroos mix, but coach Walters will have a close look at 31-year-old Trbojevic in the Sea Eagles' run home to the finals, starting with Friday's clash against ladder-leaders Canberra. Trbojevic last played for Australia against New Zealand in Melbourne in 2023. Walters is expected to pick at least five specialist front-rowers in his 22-man squad. 'Jake has never let anyone down when he has played for Australia – we want 22 blokes ready to go, who want to play for their country, and Jake certainly fits that category,' Walters said on Thursday. 'I coached against him, and you know what you get with him. His tackling technique is so good – ask someone who has been hit by him, and they'll give you your answer. 'A person of his calibre and character is always important to a team. He's certainly in the mix. I feel like we have good depth in that area, including the guys who were there last year, like Patty and Lindsay Smith and Lindsay Collins, while there will also be players who jump out during the finals series.'

The secret contract clause that could lead to PNG's first signing
A secret clause in his new South Sydney deal that allows Alex Johnston to negotiate with PNG at any time could result in the fledgling franchise snaring the game's greatest try-scorer as their No.1 signing. Johnston signed a new two-year contract extension just a fortnight ago, which ensures he will break Ken Irvine's tryscoring record at 'The Pride of the League'. The winger is just five tries short of Irvine's mark of 212, which is poised to fall late this year or early next season. Under the NRL's contracting rules, players aren't allowed to negotiate with rival clubs until November 1 of the year before their deal expires. However, the Rabbitohs have inserted a clause that allows Johnston to negotiate with PNG at any time of his choosing, a move that gives the new franchise a potential huge headstart ahead of its 2028 inclusion into the competition. 'Alex has been a captain of [their] national team, has played 10 Tests and is revered in PNG,' said Rabbitohs chief executive Blake Solly. 'He will always have a home here at Souths, but if Alex and his family want to be part of the PNG team on its entry to the NRL competition, we understand, respect and support that.' Given he is just 30 years old and has had few serious injuries during a 239-game NRL career spanning 11 seasons, there's every chance Johnston will still be playing at the top level when PNG joins the competition. In a recent interview, Johnston revealed he was open to the prospect of signing with the new franchise. 'It would be pretty cool to be player No.1,' Johnston told PNG newspaper The National during a visit to the Pacific nation last month. 'With my connection to the country, if there is an offer on the table, of course, I would consider it.'
