Flames prospect Basha and Medicine Hat to Play in 2025 Memorial Cup Final

Yahoo6 days ago

Calgary prospect Andrew Basha and the WHL champions Medicine Hat Tigers defeated the OHL champions 3-1 on Tuesday to book their place in Sunday's Final of the 2025 Memorial Cup.
The Tigers have now gone undefeated during the round-robin stage.
While the stats sheet show the 19-year-old Basha has put up one assist in the tournament, he has been important in sending in dangerous passes that unfortunately don't get put into the back of the net by his teammates.
The Calgary native will have one more game to make a lasting impact.
The Knights will face off against the winner of Wednesday's game of the Rimouski Oceanic vs Moncton Wildcats in Friday's semifinal to determine who will face the Tigers in the Final. Fellow Flames prospect Etienne Morin plays for Moncton.
All three games are slated to start at 7 pm ET/4pm PT.

Carpenter hits 3 homers as the Tigers reach 40 wins by pounding the White Sox 13-1

CHICAGO (AP) — Kerry Carpenter hit a career-high three homers and drove in five runs to help the Detroit Tigers pound the lowly Chicago White Sox 13-1 on Monday night. Dillon Dingler and Wenceel Pérez also went deep as Detroit became the first major league team to reach 40 wins this season. Parker Meadows had two hits and scored three times in his season debut after being sidelined by an arm injury. Jack Flaherty (4-6) pitched six innings of one-run ball in his second straight win. The right-hander allowed four hits, struck out four and walked one. The Tigers improved to 22-9 in their last 31 games. It was their 11th consecutive win at the White Sox dating to Sept. 1, 2023, matching a franchise record for the longest such streak in an opponent's ballpark. Chicago finished with five hits in its seventh loss in eight games. Chase Meidroth singled and scored on Vinny Capra's groundout in the sixth, accounting for the team's only run. Carpenter hit a two-run drive in Detroit's three-run first against Jonathan Cannon (2-7). He connected for another two-run shot in the fourth and a solo drive in the sixth for his 13th homer on the season. He batted again with two runners on in the eighth. Amid chants of 'Kerry! Kerry!' by the Tigers fans in a crowd of 11,852, he flied out to center. Detroit also had a big night in the field. Meadows robbed Andrew Benintendi of a run-scoring hit with a diving catch in center for the last out of the first. Riley Greene hustled over for a terrific sliding grab on Meidroth's drive near the line in left in the third. But catcher Dingler and third baseman Zach McKinstry combined for what might have been the team's best defensive play in the fifth. Dingler slid as he went after Joshua Palacios' foul popup and the ball went off his glove to McKinstry for the out. Key moment Pérez's two-run homer in the second lifted the Tigers to a 5-0 lead. Key stat Carpenter became the first player to hit three homers for Detroit since Victor Martinez on June 16, 2016, at Kansas City. Up next The Tigers are going with a bullpen day on Tuesday. Rookie right-hander Shane Smith (1-3, 2.68 ERA) is expected to start one of the next two games for Chicago, but the White Sox were waiting to finalize their rotation until after the series opener. ___ AP MLB:

Tigers' Dillon Dingler, Zach McKinstry pull off ridiculous lucky grab in blowout win over White Sox

Zach McKinstry somehow managed to catch a foul ball that bounced off of Dillon Dingler's glove in the Tigers' blowout win over the White Sox on Monday night. () Dillon Dingler and Zach McKinstry teamed up for what could easily be the luckiest grab of the MLB season on Monday night. The Detroit Tigers teammates, in the fifth inning of their matchup with the Chicago White Sox, ran to try and catch a foul ball popped up by Joshua Palacios that was headed toward the dugout. Advertisement But as Dingler slid to try and make the grab, he just barely mistimed the catch. The ball bounced off his glove and back toward an unsuspecting McKinstry, who somehow managed to make the catch and complete the out. McKinstry could only stand there and laugh once he realized what he had done. Hey, whatever works. The play was just part of what ended up being a blowout win for the best team in Major League Baseball on Monday. The Tigers cruised to the 13-1 win over the White Sox, thanks in part to a huge showing from Kerry Carpenter. Carpenter hit three home runs in the contest, which made him the first Tigers player to hit three in a single game since 2016. He hit a solo shot in the first inning at Rate Field, and then followed it up with a two-run homer in the fourth inning. That second dinger put the Tigers up 8-0 at the time. Advertisement Then two innings later, Carpenter hit a third homer to center for good measure. White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. nearly robbed that one, but he couldn't quite climb up the outfield wall enough to reach the ball as it crossed over. The White Sox fell to 18-42 with the loss, which marked their seventh in their last eight games. The Tigers now sit at 40-21 on the year. They've lost just once in their last eight outings. While it's still early June, the Tigers are making an incredible early push in the American League. If Carpenter keeps it up, and they manage to keep pulling in ridiculous catches like they did on Monday night, there's no telling where the Tigers will end up in a few months.
