Roads awash with hundreds of bare bikers for annual Vancouver World Naked Bike Ride

CTV News17 hours ago
Traffic was stopped and attention was grabbed Sunday afternoon as hundreds took to Vancouver roads wearing nothing but their pride.
The annual Vancouver World Naked Bike Ride, initiated in the winter of 2002 by social activist Conrad Schmidt, saw men and women of all shapes and sizes shed their clothes and gather at Sunset Beach at Beach Avenue and Bute Street for noon, before the ride got underway at 2 p.m.
Designed to champion 'human-powered transport,' the event saw some hit the streets via skateboard or rollerblades, joining the bikers in a journey that left many unsuspecting pedestrians and motorists shocked and snapping photos.
While cyclists are encouraged to be as naked as they feel comfortable with, with Sunday's event hosting bikers in various states of undress and fancy dress, helmets and appropriate shoes are mandatory.
Many bike riders seized the opportunity to use the event as a platform to raise awareness for environmental issues, using their bare bodies as canvases for politically charged messages. One rider's back bore the slogan 'burn calories not fossil fuels', while another had painted 'climate crisis is real.'
The event culminated with a celebratory picnic, hosted by clothing-optional rights group Naked Iconoclasts Fighting The Yoke (NIFTY).

Shania Twain donating $25,000 to Second Harvest in Ottawa

Shania Twain performs at the Scotiabank Saddledome during the Calgary Stampede on Saturday, July 5, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta. Canadian superstar Shania Twain is making a major donation to help feed families in need in Ottawa ahead of her Bluesfest show this month. Second Harvest says Twain is donating $25,000 through the Shania Twain Foundation, which will help the organization 'rescue and redistribute 75,000 meals' to people in the nation's capital. 'The $25,000 donation, which will be officially presented to Second Harvest at Shania Twain's concert at Ottawa Bluesfest 2025 on July 13th, demonstrates the commitment the Canadian singer makes to support the cities in which she performs,' Second Harvest said in a news release. Second Harvest is a 'food rescue' organization. According to its website, it acquires unsold surplus food from food businesses and redistributes that food to local non-profits across Canada. 'With nearly one in four households in Ottawa struggling to afford food, the need has never been greater,' said Lori Nikkel, CEO of Second Harvest in the release. 'The impact of the Shania Twain Foundation's gift will go far beyond one organization. It will enable us to rescue more food and reach more communities through our non-profit partners in Ottawa.' The Ottawa donation is part of a broader commitment Twain made to donate to Second Harvest in five Canadian cities on her summer tour. 'Strong communities are built when we take care of each other,' said Twain. 'By partnering with Second Harvest, we're making sure good food reaches the people who need it most, right here in Ottawa. No one in Canada should go hungry when there's more than enough food to go around.' According to Second Harvest, Lionhearts Inc. is one of the partners in Ottawa that will benefit from the donation. 'We're thankful for The Shania Twain Foundation's support of Second Harvest, lifting even more people 'Up!' in the communities served by Second Harvest and partner charities like ours,' said Lionhearts Operations Manager Tristan Kuracina. Ottawa Bluesfest begins Thursday. Shania Twain is the headliner on Sunday, July 13.

TikTok Canada halts arts sponsorships including with TIFF, Junos as shutdown looms

A view of the TikTok offices in Toronto, on Wednesday December 4, 2024. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Chris Young TORONTO — TikTok says it's pulling out as a sponsor of several Canadian arts institutions including the Juno Awards and the Toronto International Film Festival as it prepares to comply with a federal order to shut down operations in Canada. Since opening offices in Toronto and Vancouver TikTok says it has invested millions in programs and partnerships supporting local artists and creators over the past five years. But TikTok Canada's director of public policy and government affairs Steve de Eyre says Ottawa is now enforcing its order from last November to wind down operations over national security concerns, and TikTok has no choice but to suspend those initiatives indefinitely. Another group that will be impacted is the education charity MusiCounts, which TikTok says it's provided with $500,000 to date to support high school music programs. The social media giant has been a Junos partner since 2020 and a title sponsor of the Juno Fan Choice Award. It's also worked with TIFF since 2022, sponsoring the festival's Short Cuts and Special Presentations programs, and supporting industry panels that featured Canadian creators. Also among the casualties is the National Screen Institute's TikTok Accelerator for Indigenous Creators that has worked with nearly 400 participants since 2021. Sarah Simpson-Yellowquill, the program's manager, calls the shutdown 'sad and disheartening,' saying the accelerator has been a vital source of career opportunities and mentorship for Indigenous creators. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 7, 2025. Alex Nino Gheciu, The Canadian Press
