'Flick's Handbook': Barcelona Head Coach Imposes New 'Lifestyle Rules' For Players

Flick has introduced a rule focusing on players' lifestyles after widespread criticism of Lamine Yamal's 18th birthday party, with the German taking a stricter view on partying.
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick, who is known to be a strict disciplinarian, has added a new rule to his existing handbook for the Blaugrana players to follow as the German has taken a stricter view on partying after widespread criticism of teenager Lamine Yamal's extravagant birthday party did the rounds recently.
Flick's 10 Rules for Players
When Flick arrived at Barcelona, he introduced 10 rules to raise professionalism in the squad. Players must arrive 90 minutes before training and undergo daily weight checks. Everyone must eat in the team canteen, and on matchdays, the squad takes part in morning warm-ups before meeting at the team hotel.
Late-night flights after evening games are banned, with players staying overnight instead. Flick also demands 90-minute intense training sessions, often keeping players at the training ground for five hours a day. Rest days between games are reduced to prioritise training.
The German coach replaced fines with personal motivation and keeps a professional rather than a friendly relationship with players.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, Flick has now introduced an 11th rule focused on players' lifestyles. After criticism of youngster Lamine Yamal's 18th birthday party, Flick will take a stricter view on partying and off-field distractions. He wants players to show more discretion in their social activities and focus fully on football.
Christmas parties will be minimised, and Flick will monitor commercial work that could disrupt first-team schedules.
Rashford's Past Issues
Marcus Rashford has completed a season-long loan move from Manchester United to Barcelona. The 27-year-old forward called the transfer a 'dream move" and wished United well for the upcoming Premier League season. Rashford had fallen out of favour under new United boss Ruben Amorim and spent the previous season on loan at Aston Villa.
Now, Rashford will play under Barcelona manager Flick, who led the club to the La Liga title in his first season in charge. The English star may be in for a culture shock as Flick is known for his strict rules and high standards.
Rashford has faced criticism in England for his off-field activities. In 2023, he apologised to then-United boss Erik ten Hag after holding a birthday party hours after a 3-0 loss to Manchester City. In 2024, he was reported to have gone out in Belfast before missing training ahead of an FA Cup match.
Rashford's move to Barcelona comes with a clear message: focus on football first. With Flick's strict rules, Rashford's life in Spain is set to be very different from that in England.

Siraj steps up: How India's pace spearhead thrives without Bumrah

Mohd Siraj took 3 wickets till the first two sessions in the 5th Test as the English batters were bamboozled by the pacer's efforts despite playing all the Tests in the series. Shashwat Nishant New Delhi As the England–India Test series reaches its decider at The Oval, with England leading 2-1 after four Tests. Cricketing commentators are revisiting the curious phenomenon: Mohammed Siraj often bowls better when Jasprit Bumrah is not present, a phenomenon loosely reminiscent of the so-called Ewing Theory. This was once again proven in the 5th Test as Day 2 saw Mohd Siraj take 3 wickets till the first two sessions as the English batters were bamboozled by the pacer's efforts despite playing all the Tests in the series. The disparity in Siraj's record in away Test is notable. In 35 away Test innings alongside Bumrah, he captured 64 wickets at 33.90. Without Bumrah, in 15 away Test innings, he claimed 34 wickets at 24.20. Siraj's away Test stats with and without Bumrah (Stats till ENG vs IND 5th Test Day 2) Condition Innings Wickets Average With Bumrah (Away) 35 64 33.9 Without Bumrah (Away) 15 34 24.2 These numbers show how lethal Siraj has been in the absence of his teammate who has on most days taken the onus on himself to guide the side. Why the Better Returns in Absence? Batters' Approach Opponents appear more aggressive against Siraj when Bumrah isn't on the field. Without the fearsome threat of Bumrah, batsmen take more risks against Siraj—raising his economy marginally, but also creating more wicket-taking opportunities . Earlier Involvement Data from home Tests show that without Bumrah, Siraj is more frequently given the new ball or is brought into the attack earlier. He opens or first-change over 75% of the time, compared to rarely opening when Bumrah plays. This early exposure arguably gives him rhythm and opportunity to make breakthroughs In Bumrah's absence, Siraj clearly assumes the mantle of bowling leader. His on-field assertiveness, encouraging younger bowlers like Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna, and willingness to shoulder responsibility may sharpen his focus. As Dinesh Karthik noted, Siraj 'likes to get aggressive,' and has shown leadership even in domestic incidents and wicketkeeping advice Country wise stats of Mohd Siraj in Tests (Stats till ENG vs IND 5th Test Day 2) Country With Bumrah – Matches Wickets Without Bumrah – Matches Wickets Australia 7 27 1 6 India 6 10 8 9 England 7 24 3 9 South Africa 4 12 – – Bangladesh – – 2 6 West Indies – – 2 7 Overall 24 73 16 37 Series Context: India Needs Siraj at His Best With England leading 2-1, having won at Headingley and Lord's, and India salvaging a big victory at Edgbaston - the second Test - thanks to Gill's scores and Siraj's support, the ongoing Oval Test is do-or-die for India With Bumrah unavailable, India relied heavily on Siraj and Prasidh Krishna took hands into their own hands in London on Day 2. Siraj has already shown form—notching three wickets in the 1st innings at The Oval and setting the tone as India took the innings into their own hands with quick wickets. Siraj's ability to command the attack early and spark pressure spells makes him key to leveling the series. The numbers suggest that Siraj's test effectiveness improves when he does not operate in Bumrah's shadow. Whether through batsmen's altered mindset, greater bowling responsibility, or psychological sharpness, Mohammed Siraj consistently thrives when he leads the attack, a trend India hope continues as they fight to salvage the series.

Durand Cup 2025: Clayton Silva Nets Four As Diamond Harbour FC Thrash BSF 8-1

Last Updated: Diamond Harbour triumphed 8-1 over BSF in the 134th Durand Cup. Clayton Silva scored four, Luka Majcen two, while Paul and Jobby Justin added. Kishori scored BSF's lone goal. Diamond Harbour FC continued their winning run in the 134th Durand Cup with a commanding 8-1 victory over BSF Football Club in a Group B clash, here at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan (KBK). Brazilian striker Clayton Silva starred with four goals (2', 35', 71', 90+3') while Slovenian forward Luka Majcen netted a brace (7', 39'). Paul (53') and Jobby Justin (67') added to the tally. BSF FC's lone goal came from Kishori in the 90th minute. Diamond Harbour Football Club Head Coach Jose Antonio made four changes to his starting line-up bringing in Spanish defender Mikel Kortazar Idiakez, Lalliansanga Renthelei, goal keeper Susanta Malik and Slovenian Forward Luka Majcen in place of Wahengbam Angousana Luwang, Mirshad Koottappunna, Naro Hari Shrestha and Lalliansanga Renthlei, while BSF FC Head Coach Gurjit Singh Atwal named an experienced starting eleven in a 4-4-2 formation with Kishori and Harmandeep Singh in the attacking line. The I-League 2 champions needed just two minutes to make their intentions clear, as Clayton Silva opened the scoring with a composed right footed finish off a Jobby Justin cross. Luka Majcen doubled the lead five minutes later, smashing in after a scramble by Clayton in the box. Despite BSF's attempts to get into the game, they were largely outplayed in midfield and struggled to contain Diamond Harbour's attacking trio of Silva, Majcen, and Paul. In the 35th minute, Silva struck again with a volley from Girik's cross, after Paul and Jobby combined to create the opportunity and just four minutes later, Majcen made it 4-0 after receiving a lofted pass from the Brazilian. BSF's best first-half moment came in the 43rd minute when Kishori's shot was blocked by keeper Susnata Malik. But it was Diamond Harbour who went into the break with a dominant 4-0 lead. Jose Antonio's men picked up where they left off in the second half. Paul added the fifth in the 53rd minute, beating the BSF defense with a low drive. BSF's backline continued to struggle under pressure, and Jobby Justin scored the sixth with a powerful header from Samuel's corner in the 67th minute. Silva completed his hat-trick in the 71st minute, capitalising on a failed clearance from another corner. Though BSF pulled one back in the 90th minute through Kishori, after a neat assist by Harmandeep, it was a mere consolation. The Brazilian capped off a stellar night with his fourth goal in injury time, powering in a shot from outside the box to make it 8-1. With this emphatic win, Diamond Harbour FC moved to the top of Group B with six points and +7 goal difference from two matches, ahead of the crucial encounter against Mohun Bagan on August 9. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'You Can't Talk Like That...': Kumar Dharmasena Reprimands KL Rahul After Verbal Spat

Last Updated: Sri Lanka umpire Kumar Dharmasena was in focus during the fifth Test between India and England after a heated exchange with KL Rahul over Prasidh Krishna's dispute with Joe Root. Sri Lanka umpire Kumar Dharmasena was yet again in focus on Day 2 of the fifth Test between India and England after he engaged in a war of words with India's KL Rahul, after he wanted Prasidh Krishna to stop arguing with ace England batter Joe Root, which continued for a while. As Root aimed at Krishna, Rahul stepped in to back his teammate and walked up to Dharmasena to get clarity on the situation. Rahul questioned the umpire, asking if he expected the Indian side to bat and bowl without showing any emotion or engaging in anything else on the field. The former continued to support Krishna. 'What do you want us to do? Be quiet," Rahul questioned Dharmasena. 'Will you like any bowler who comes and walks to you? No, you can't do that. No, Rahul, we shouldn't go on that way," Dharmasena replied. 'What do you want us to do? Just bat and ball and go home," Rahul retorted. 'We will discuss at the end of the match. You can't talk like that," Dharmasena said. Meanwhile, star India pacer Mohammed Siraj struck thrice in a fiery eight-over spell to lead India's fightback in the afternoon session of the fifth and final Test against England in London on Friday. At tea, England were 215/7, eight down with Chris Woakes not available to bat because of a shoulder injury. They still trail India by nine runs. The wickets to fall were England's batting mainstay Joe Root (29 off 45), Zak Crawley (64 off 57), stand-in skipper Ollie Pope (22 off) and Jacob Bethell (6 off 14). A heated exchange of words between Root and Prasidh Krishna was among the talking points of the session as well. After being blown away by the England openers in the opening session, Indian pacers found their lengths post the break. Prasidh sent back Crawley, who mistimed a pull to be pouched at midwicket. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
