That is despite the National Literacy Trust studies showing reading for pleasure benefits empathy, confidence and wellbeing.
Children's author Adam Kay, whose new book Simon Gets Sneezed comes out in July, told The Sun: 'Not only does a love of books award you a lifelong membership to an infinite world of stories and adventure, reading for pleasure is crucially important for children.
'It literally improves the development of their brains: from speech and language to memory and attention.'

On the reception to the first series, Jenna, 22, said: 'I'm still very appreciative and grateful. "We didn't know that anyone was going to watch the show. 'You do these things and you don't know what's to come, so it was very overwhelming.' A former child star, Jenna was catapulted into the A list when Wednesday – viewed 252 million times and counting – launched in 2022. And by her own refreshingly candid admission, that rapid rise to the top was overwhelming. 'To be quite frank, after the show and trying to figure everything out, I was an unhappy person,' she told Harper's Bazaar in May. 'After the pressure, the attention – as somebody who's quite introverted, that was so intense and so scary.' The eight-month shoot in Romania had been challenging, with Jenna revealing: 'I was alone. Never had any hot water. The boilers in two of my apartments were broken, so I always took cold showers.' At least she'll be getting a warm welcome from Wednesday fans as the show returns to their screens. Later in July she was seen partying among revellers at BST Hyde Park Festival. Meanwhile Kate's daughter Lila has been promoting the new Diabetes Type 1 Barbie doll. Like Lila, her doll has a glucose monitor arm patch, an insulin pump on her leg and a bag for emergency snacks. Lila, 22, said: 'Receiving messages from people who see my patches and feel represented by me means everything to me.
