4 arrested as Isle of Palms police increase presence on ‘Senior Skip Day'
ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCBD) – 'Senior Skip Day' has returned once again, and officers on the Isle of Palms are increasing their presence in an effort to curb criminal activity.
Police said that four people, three adults, and one minor, were arrested and charged Friday afternoon.
The charges included possession of marijuana, possession of a machine gun, unlawful carrying of a pistol, simple possession of marijuana, and minor possession of alcohol.
Hundreds of kids began coming to the beach about noon on Friday. Around 4 p.m. a large group was asked to leave. According to officials, the group did not have a permit for such a large gathering and faced a $1000 fine.
The increased presence stems from a shooting that occurred in 2022, where five people were injured.
On April 7th, 2023, hundreds of teens were on the Isle of Palms for a 'Senior Skip Day' celebration. A fight broke out and shots were fired injuring five people and leading to chaos on the island. Police have implemented new protocols to ensure that never happens again
'Nobody lost their lives thankfully but, on that day, Chief Cornett vowed to never let that happen out here again and he takes that very seriously, so anytime we have intelligence that a senior skip day or big event might happen we're going to have increased police presence and be vigilant,' said Sgt. Matt Storen with the Isle of Palms Police.
Isle of Palms Police and Fire are patrolling the island along with their partners the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, the North Charleston Police Department, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch.
'It makes me feel this sense of comfort that I know in case anything happens there always someone to come rescue or protect us in the event of a tragedy,' said Raylon Godfrey, a high school senior.
Police have also shut down 14th Avenue and closed half of a municipal parking lot to limit the crowds.
Isle of Palms Police say they rely heavily on the community., and they're reminding everyone to report any suspicious activity
'If they see anything suspicious or out of the ordinary, please do not hesitate to call 9-1-1 or flag one of the officers down they're going to be out on the beach in the coming weeks and into the summer months,' said Storen.
Increased law enforcement will be out on the island all next week for spring break.

And, Ms. Lopez said that as she shouted instructions in Spanish to the man inside the vehicle, an agent drew a rifle at her. 'It came across as essentially a final warning, to step back,' Ms. Lopez said, adding that the men then laughed at her and 'started cracking up.' Pr. George's police chief is a finalist for a job in Phoenix
The city of Phoenix said Wednesday that Prince George's County Police Chief Malik Aziz is a finalist in its nationwide search for someone to lead the police department in Arizona's largest city. The news circulated among Aziz's officers in Maryland, many of whom learned of the chief's job search from a Phoenix news release announcing him as one of three finalists. The Prince George's County Police Department declined to comment. The news of Aziz's potential departure comes as Aisha N. Braveboy (D) prepares to take over as Prince George's County executive on Juneteenth. Braveboy, who has served as state's attorney since 2019, was elected to the role in early June after the job was vacated mid-term by Angela Alsobrooks (D), now a U.S. senator. It is not uncommon for new county executives to bring in their own Cabinet members or hire new people into key leadership roles. As the top law enforcement officials in Prince George's County, Braveboy and Aziz worked alongside each other since 2021, when he was hired to reform the police department amid nationwide calls for racial justice and police accountability. 'As states attorney my office had a good working relationship with Chief Aziz,' Braveboy said in a statement Wednesday. 'I wish him the best.' Acting county executive Tara Jackson said in a statement that Aziz 'has done an outstanding job leading our police department through challenging times.' At a recent news conference, Aziz touted an overall decrease in crime, with total crime down 16 percent compared with this time last year. His annual summer crime initiative is in full swing, which focuses on crime reduction and community engagement during the summer months. A Texas native, Aziz came to Maryland after decades in law enforcement in Dallas, where he garnered a national reputation as an advocate for community policing and reform. He had served as the national chair of the National Black Police Association and worked on President Barack Obama's task force on 21st century policing in 2015. He advocated for the Justice Department to collect annual demographic statistics from all police agencies to hold them accountable for diversifying their command ranks, according to the task force's final report. Alsobrooks hired Aziz in March 2021 and instructed him to overhaul a department that has long had a contentious relationship with county residents. He took over as the nation and the county were grappling with the Black Lives Matter movement and widespread calls for reform. He vowed to build a strong relationship with reform advocates and community partners. Tamara McKinney, vice president of the Heels Off Gloves On Boxing Foundation, said Aziz once showed up to a boxing ring to support the organization. When he noticed a young boxer was without boxing shoes, he found a sponsor to assist the group. They were able to buy 16 to 18 pairs of shoes for boxers who couldn't afford the equipment, McKinney said. 'I think he made a concerted effort to change the mind of the community about having such a negative outlook on police,' McKinney said. Before coming to Prince George's, Aziz had been a finalist for chief positions in cities across the country, including Milwaukee, Miami and his hometown of Dallas, where he last served as deputy chief of the Dallas Police Department. Berkeley County Coroner's Office holding funeral for unidentified remains
BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Berkeley County Coroner's Office is burying the remains of an unidentified individual found at Santee Cooper and another unidentified person who died in the College Park Road area. The private burial will take place at the Berkeley Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Friday at 11:30 a.m. 'Hundreds of hours have been invested by the coroner's office, sheriff's office, and Santee Cooper law enforcement in an attempt to identify these decedents,' Coroner Darnell Hartwell said. 'Autopsies, dental examinations, fingerprints, DNA, genetic genealogy and a facial artist have all been utilized in trying to identify both decedents.' Coroner Hartwell added that both deaths are being investigated as suspicious. The Berkeley County Supervisor and Berkeley County Council assisted with providing funding for the burial. Remains found at Santee Cooper Authorities received a 911 call on Sunday, June 2, about possible human remains found at the Santee Cooper Cross Generating Station Coal Yard. The coroner's office responded to the scene. The remains were recovered with the help of Santee Cooper employees, Berkeley County deputies, Berkeley County Emergency Management and the local fire department. Those remains were later determined to be human. An autopsy was performed on June 6, but the manner of death has not been released. College Park Road death On Sept. 29, 2023, responders were called to a scene in the College Park Road area of Summerville regarding a deceased male. The coroner's office said that the man could have frequented the area and the Red Oak Circle neighborhood in Summerville. Officials believe the man is Hispanic or Native American, between 45-70 years old, when he died with gray hair. He was about five feet six inches tall and weighed between 155 to 175 pounds.
